Ulua, Golden Trevally and Coconut Crabs
Queen Lili‘uokalani Park is the largest traditional Japanese garden outside of Japan. Most people enjoy leisurely walks around the Hilo park’s 30 acres of koi ponds, bridges, pagodas, statues and teahouse, but not Don Memmer. He’s often busy whipping a fly rod at Waihonu Pond, catching and releasing the park’s bonefish that flush into the pond from the waters circling Coconut Island. For Don, a seasoned Hawai‘i fishing guide, casting a Lili‘uokalani Park fly is practice for Christmas Island’s gear-busting giant trevally, nicknamed G.T.s, a.k.a. ulua.
