The Ninth Annual Club Challenge was more than just a friendly battle between O‘ahu’s shoreline fishing clubs; it was a test of skill, luck and persistence for each of the 224 entrants that formed 18 teams. The fish targeted were extremely stubborn during this year’s event. The bites were hard to come by, especially by the fish that made the minimum catch weight of 5 lbs. Sharks of many species are known to congregate within the waters of our island paradise, and this makes Hawai‘i an ideal spot in which to study or pursue this mysterious beast. One of those individuals who is concerned and interested in the shark is Victor Faughnan, author of “The National Shark-O-Pedia,” an informative guide to the recognition and identification of sharks. Governor Leaves Before Fireworks At a “Cabinet in Your Community” meeting held in Kona on August 15, Gov. Abercrombie left before the fireworks erupted over the controversial West Hawaii Fisheries Council rules package that includes a scuba spearfishing ban on the Kona Coast. Gov. Abercrombie, according to a West Hawaii Today account, made opening remarks to the community meeting including numerous cabinet heads like Transportation, Human Services and Health and DLNR. After Gov. Abercrombie’s opening remarks, those attending split into smaller breakout sessions. A full room of nearly 100 people attended the rules package breakout held in the Kealakehe Intermediate School Cafeteria. Survey Seeks Fishermen According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are more than 150,000 people who fish on or near our islands. With all of the lines, spears and nets in the water, it is inevitable that some would worry about the decline of our fishing stocks and call for tighter regulations. Of course, things are a bit more complicated than simply “more fishers means more fishing and therefore less fish.” Overfishing is definitely an issue in a number of locations, but fish stocks are also often affected by pollution, run-off from land-based development, invasive species and a number of other factors. These, however, are much more difficult to deal with, and fishers like you eventually suffer the brunt of well-intentioned, but misguided regulations. Regulations themselves are not…

I’ve been a commercial fisherman from Alaska to Antarctica for 40 years and have made it through hurricanes, gales and freak waves. I’ve seen the unregulated growth in the longline fishery here in Hawai‘i and the collapse and closing of the bottomfish and lobster fisheries in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. However, I’ve never been more frightened in my life of the sea or what is happening in our fisheries than now–and that’s while I sit here safe at my desk writing this. Sportsman’s Act of 2012–Rally the Troops When I read the Splash column in the February 2013 HAWAII FISHING NEWS, I thought you were trying to “rally the troops.” As such, I wrote my letters to my congressmen and representatives and tried to get support from our local Trout Unlimited as well as Mr. [William] Aila, DLNR. I think my letters and comments have fallen on deaf ears. At the last meeting of the Kuli‘ou‘ou Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board, there were only two of us that voted against closing the Kuli‘ou‘ou Beach Park from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. It’s my understanding the intent of this act was to ensure hunters and fishermen had access to public hunting and fishing areas. The National SHARK-O-PEDIA About the Author: Vic Faughnan first became involved with sharks while serving in the U.S. Air Force at Hickam AFB in Hawaii from May 1965 to September 1967. He caught his first shark with hook and handline from the Bishop Point pier in the Pearl Harbor channel. Subsequently, he became a crewman aboard the 51-ft. fishing sampan “Alika.” This vessel was chartered by the University of Hawaii for the “1967-1969 Cooperative Shark Research and Control Program.” From then on, Vic himself was ‘hooked;’ shark fishing and technology became his vocation. In 1971, the Hawaii Fish and Game Department re-activated the Shark Control and Research Program and chartered the “R/V Machias” with Victor Faughnan as field investigator, consultant and advisor. The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) was saddened to learn about the passing of German visitor Jana Lutteropp on Maui. Our hearts and aloha went out to her family. In times like these, the HTA works with its island chapters and Visitor Assistance Program partners to assist visitors who have faced adversity during their stay. Upon hearing about the attack, the HTA reached out to Jana’s family through the Maui Visitors Bureau and the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai‘i on Maui to offer our support and aloha. On behalf of the State of Hawai‘i, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is currently conducting a study to examine the movements of sharks in Hawaiian waters. Much of what we know about the abundance, movements and residency of false killer whales in Hawai‘i’s waters comes from photographs of their dorsal fins, either taken during our research, or contributed by other people who spend time on the water. These photos, if they show distinctive markings on the fin, allow us to track individuals through time, see who they associate with and where they go, and estimate their abundance. I first started working with false killer whales in Hawai‘i in 2000 while living on Maui, photo-identifying individuals and using a crossbow to collect small skin/blubber samples for genetic studies. In 2002, this work was expanded to the leeward waters of O‘ahu and the Big Island where we encountered false killer whales, albeit infrequently, an average of only once…

Kohala Shorecasters Rock! While on our annual Fourth of July fishing trip to the Kohala Coast on the island of Hawai‘i, I was given the privilege to participate in the First Annual North Kohala Ulua Tournament. This invitational tournament was open to people who were born, raised, got married, and reside in Kohala and to the graduates of Kohala High School. Of course, I accepted the invitation to fish in this tournament. I was born and raised in Kohala.
