When you see a kagami papio or ulua, you’ll know instantly why early Japanese anglers chose this name. Its super-shiny foil-like skin is smooth and shimmering. Aloha HFN, I just read your article by Carrol Cox on sheep on O‘ahu. My parents lived in Hawai‘i-kai on Mariner’s Ridge back in the ’70s and I remember hiking the Ko‘olaus and seeing large herds of sheep in the mountains. In particular, a very large ram with an impressive rack of curved horns that indicated to me that they had been there for quite some time. Thus, introduction of sheep must have taken place in the early ’70s, or prior. Someone must have a record of this somewhere. ▪ On June 4, 2013, the Big Island shook from a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. As I sat at work, I thought about the countless fishermen who were already at their fishing spots, getting ready for the S. Tokunaga Store Ulua Challenge. I quickly texted my friends who were camping on the south side of the Big Island to make sure they were aware of the quake. They had already received a quake update from a smart phone application. I checked the Internet just to make sure there was no tsunami generated from the quake and was relieved to read that there were no warnings. ▪ Aloha ya’ll! We just got back from four days of intensive fly fishing at the Koke‘e Pu‘uloa Reservoir on Kaua‘i, and it was really awesome! There were at least 1,000 anglers there on opening day and the day after. It was truly inspiring to see so many local families enjoying the great fishing. Hats off to the DLNR staff on Kaua‘i, DLNR Director William Aila, Dennis Shinno and the hatchery staff and Gov. Neil Abercrombie for having the foresight to keep this great program going. ▪ There are lots of advantages to surfcasting or shore-casting including low fuel costs and no boat costs, the ability to make a food or beer run, and the convenience of a bathroom or bush. Unfortunately, this option is not widely available where we fish in Florida. You can wade-cast, but there’s always the danger of running into a gator or a bull shark (see side bar). ▪ Aloha. Here’s a quick roundup of what’s been happening in Hale‘iwa Harbor. Recent weeks have seen some great fishing out of Hale‘iwa. The North Shore Hana Pa‘a Jackpot kicked off the summertime ‘ahi season, with many fish over the 200-lb mark. Capt. Hopper aboard the GRAND SLAM was the overall winner with his day-two catch of a 495-lb blue marlin. The end of June and beginning of July have been filled with big ‘ahi. Although the buoys have not been holding fish, there were ‘ahi strikes from bird piles and in the blind anywhere from 10 to 30 miles out. Catching ‘The Fever’ ▪ Welina. This year, the 16th Annual Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament, the biggest in the state, was on! Two hundred participating boats graced the waters of the Pacific Ocean, making it the “eighth wonder of the world” for those on the west side of O‘ahu. I captured the moment from atop the roof of the Wai‘anae Boat Harbor. This year, unlike some previous Ahi Fever tournaments, it was definitely about “fishing” and not “catching.” The Wai’anae Boat Fishing Club (WBFC) did what they do best, and hosted the biggest fishing tournament in the state. By now, most ‘o‘io fishermen know that Hawai‘i’s bonefish are a different species from those found in the Atlantic and other places. In fact, there may really be 11 species overall around the world. And you probably also know there are actually two different ‘o‘io species found here in Hawai‘i. You seldom see the two together because one species, the “sharp jaw,” is found in deep water and the other, the “round jaw,” in shallow water. So you are not likely to catch both in the same place. ▪ The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council held its 157th meeting from June 26 to 28, 2013, in Honolulu. Two key issues addressed were the domestic management of fisheries through annual catch limits (ACLs) and the international management of pelagic fisheries through the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). 2014 Annual Catch Limits For the seven popular deep-water (Deep Seven) bottom fish in the main Hawaiian islands (MHI), the Council recommended that the 2014 ACL be set at 346,000 lbs and that the ACL be the quota for 2014. Last year the quota was set at 6 percent less than the ACL due to management uncertainty. Since that time, the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources has revised its reporting requirements so reports are now due by…

▪ The DLNR and NOAA Fisheries are requesting assistance from boaters in reporting dead, floating whales, especially over the summer months when large sperm whale carcasses frequently drift on shore in Hawai‘i. Early reporting, while a carcass is still floating, is very helpful–towing a floating carcass away from the islands is often much easier and less expensive than removing it once it comes aground on a shoreline or reef and helps avoid attracting large tiger sharks close to shore. Fishermen often report good fishing around a floating dead whale, and this opportunity can be extended by reporting a carcass to NOAA and DLNR as soon as possible. On March 13, 2013, Mike Casey and I went to one of our favorite spots behind the shrimp farms in Kahuku north of the estuary stream. Kona Coast Scuba Spearfishing Banned ▪ The state’s Board of Land and Natural Resources has voted to ban spearfishing with scuba gear off the Kona Coast. The vote was 4-to-2 in favor of the ban. DLNR Chairman William Aila voted against the prohibition. Chairman Aila said that the spearfishing issue had not been sufficiently studied. The scuba spear ban will cover the West Hawaii Regional Fishery Management Area (WHRFMA). Established in 1998 by Legislative Act 306, the WHRFMA encompasses 147 miles of shoreline from South Point to ‘Upolu Point. The WHRFMA is overseen by a partnership between the West Hawaii Fishery Council (WHFC) and the DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources. The scuba spearfishing ban was the controversial part of an Administrative Rules change package that mostly dealt with aquarium fish…

▪ This year’s Waialua Boat Club Fourth of July Old Futs Vs. Young Punks Tournament was a huge success and was hailed by many old-time members as the best tournament yet. That takes some explaining, which I’ll do, but first I’ll explain the tourney title. Here’s the deal: boat club captains who enter the competition are ranked by age, and 50 percent of the teams are designated “Young Punks,” and their seniors become the “Old Futs.” The team with the most poundage of qualifying, officially weighed fish wins. The losers pony up to pay off the two captains (either Punk or Fut) who land the largest and second largest qualifying fish. This competition signaled my official entry into the Old Fut category. The 2013 World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup) is an international event that took place on July 4 in 18 countries and territories with 130 teams participating. However, for the second year in a row it was Bermuda where the winning blue marlin was landed. Kevin Gaylord reeled in the winning 668-lb marlin aboard the 77-foot BLANK CHECK with Capt. Danny Hearn at the controls. Prize money totaled over $300,000 for the single heaviest marlin in the one-day event. In the World Cup there is no second place.
