■ On Sunday, May 20, a couple of buddies and I decided to take a trip to the Hamakua Coast for some diving. The ocean was as calm as a lake on this side of the island. It was going to be a good day! I had just finished my first homemade speargun about a week before, so I was pretty excited to see how it would perform on its maiden voyage. We hopped in the water. ■ Shorecasters dream of big fish–usually big ulua. But when the unexpected happens and a fish that nobody imagined strikes, it’s hard to fathom that it really happened. My good friend Jason Kaupiko had such an event happen to him one night while he was chasing the dream of catching a big ulua. The regulars had gathered at “the spot” with hopes of catching a big one. The trucks were loaded with coolers, and fresh bait was abundant. Oddly, Jason was using a chilled fresh bait, a halftako with the bulbous mantle and four legs. The bait was ghost white but it smelled OK, so Jason decided to use it. Jason felt it was still in good enough shape to attract a big ulua. As usual, the boys had cast…

■ That 50-year-old mystery of a misidentified, record-breaking Hawai‘i lure may now be solved. Here is some quick background information in case you don’t have your copy of the March 2013 HFN issue handy. Sometime around 1960, a fisherman from Virginia visited Hawai‘i and took a locally made trolling lure back to Hatteras, North Carolina. Few, if any, Atlantic bill fishermen were trolling with lures at that time. But the crew of the boat ALBATROSS used this one in 1962 to catch an 810-lb blue marlin that then became the Atlantic blue marlin record. Not knowing what to call the lure or even who made it, Capt. Bill Foster and his nephew Ernie of the ALBATROSS called it a “knucklehead,” and the name has stuck even up until now. We…

■ According to NOAA, aquaculture has “grown annually 8.3 percent since the 1970s, making it the fastest growing food production in the world.” The U.S. imports 91 percent of its seafood; nearly half is from aquaculture. The imported seafood bill totals $10.4 billion. Hawai‘i has some of the world’s oldest fishponds. HFN recently contacted Syd Kraul of Kona’s Pacific Planktonics to talk tuna and tangs and learn of Hawai‘i’s aquacultural fish fry future. Since 2005, Syd has worked at his ½-acre lease with 30 to 40 marine tanks at his fish hatchery at the Natural Energy Laboratory. His aquaculture work focuses in three areas: food fish; reef fish; and live fish food. The Energy Lab gives him space to do commercial work. “On O‘ahu, it was tough to do anything,”…

■ With more and more marine debris expected to make its way to Hawai‘i in the coming months, everyone is looking over their shoulders and wondering when the next “lookout block” is coming. For those of you who never played football, the lookout block is when a player misses a block, looks over his shoulder at the quarterback and yells, “Look out!” Think of NOAA as that blocker. All they’ve been doing or are willing to do is yell “look out” when it comes to marine debris. They claim to be in charge. They also claim to have everything under control, but in reality, NOAA is more dysfunctional than ever thanks to poor leadership and personnel who would rather lie than do what’s right. Hi Chuck! We just had to share these two pics with you because we are so excited! My husband Fred and I have been enjoying both kayak and shore fishing throughout the Islands. Fred recently started boat fishing with his friend Chad and son and has become addicted to the sport. All Fred would talk about was, “I would love to get a boat one day and catch a huge ‘ahi”! My father and I decided to surprise him and buy him a boat this year. He deserves it. Dad named the boat ON THE FLY. Our fourth time out with our boat, my favorite lure took a hit! ■ In 1998, the state of Hawai‘i, Department of Land and Natural Resources implemented 19 BRFAs throughout the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Because of new information on bottom fish and their habitat, the system was substantially revised on October 1, 2007. The new system of BRFAs reduced the overall number to 12, but included more of the area that was believed to be important to seven species of deep-water bottom fish known as the “Deep Seven.” The state’s goal was to reduce overall catch of the Deep Seven by 15 percent to ensure that more fish would live longer, grow larger and improve the spawning potential ratio, a metric that was important to determining if the fishery was in a state of overfishing as defined by the federal fisheries law.…

■ Members of a research expedition to Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument returned last week after 26 days of conducting research dives on deep coral reefs below 200 feet in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and Johnston Atoll. The primary mission of the expedition was to collect marine specimens for characterization of biological diversity and connectivity to better inform management of these special places. Researchers returned with specimens of new species of deep-water algae from the NWHI, and the first recorded specimens of black coral from Johnston Atoll. In addition, researchers logged observations and photographs of over 20 species of fishes never before recorded from the NWHI, and 15 species of fishes never before recorded at Johnston Atoll. “This represents a significant increase in the known biodiversity of Hawaiian coral reefs,…

■ Dr. Kristi West and her team are first responders. When whales and dolphins wash ashore, they rush to the shoreline and dig into their necropsy bags to investigate the cause of death. In 2006, Dr. West, an associate professor of biology at Hawaii Pacific University, founded the university’s Marine Mammal Stranding Program. She and her team are authorized by NOAA’s Marine Stranding Network to research the cause of death in dolphins and whales. Originally from Canada, Kristi received a master’s degree in marine science from the University of the Ryukyus (Japan) and her Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Kristi began her career in necropsy volunteering with veterinarian Bob Braun in Hawai‘i and furthered her studies in 2003 as a research associate at Smithsonian Institution’s Marine Mammal…

■ The catch of the month was spearfish. During May, 15 spearfish were weighed and another four were released. Only five blue marlin were weighed, caught throughout the month, and a lone striped marlin found its way to the scales. This brought the monthly total to 25 billfish. The early hot ono bite continued, and the ono showed up daily, all across Maui County. The PUALELE, based out of Ma‘alaea Harbor, hoisted a monster blue marlin weighing 872.4 lbs. It was angled by 14-year-old Kawai Luuwai, who was assisted by cousin Jordan Arruda. Kawai was fishing with his dad, Capt. Kalei Luuwai, and Capt. Bobby and Capt. Paulie Luuwai. ■ During the winter months, when the water temperatures drop and the pelagics have migrated to warmer waters, the Southern California sport-fishing fleet concentrates on catching rockfish. Back in the day, a trip targeting rockfish was called a “freezer trip” because you would came back with sacks of fish that would fill your freezer! Now California regulations only let you keep 20 legal-sized rockfish (10 of one species, except only three salmon grouper) per day. Since relocating to Southern California, I have had two very successful trips on the THUNDER-BIRD out of Davey’s Locker, in Newport Beach. The boat leaves the dock at 9 p.m. and returns the following day at about 8 p.m., depending on the fishing. On a good day it could be later, because all fish must…

Sea Shepherd Targets Hawai‘i Aquarium Trade ■ Sea Shepherd is launching its global campaign, Operation Reef Defense, and its first beach head is Hawai‘i. Operation Reef Defense promises “to end the destruction of coral reefs,” and the Hawai‘i aquarium trade is its first target. Sea Shepherd is known from the Animal Planet TV series “Whale Wars.” Operating from their mother ship, the STEVE IRWIN, they assault and harass the Japanese whaling fleet. Since 1977 when Sea Shepherd started on the Canadian ice floes, protecting baby seals from clubbing deaths, they’ve made a reputation of vigilante confrontation. This includes ramming and attacking the vessels they consider environmental outlaws. Hilo Trollers June Tournament ■ After a last-minute postponement on June 2 due to a weather forecast change at 3:53 a.m., the Hilo Trollers ran a safe and successful tournament on Sunday, June 9. The windward Big Island forecast remained steady with no warnings, although a small-craft advisory was posted for south Big Island waters. Conditions were a bit lumpy at the point. Nine boats entered, and six landed qualifying flag fish. No marlin or ‘ahi were landed. One boat landed five ono, and another landed three. The Hilo Trollers only count the two largest fish in each flagfish category toward tournament and year-end prizes, so a total of nine ono and one mahimahi were counted. Mail Buoy Just sharing a few photos from today of red runoff right directly below the Stone Development site at the Boulder Basin site. You can see the black house which is the last house on Hao St. to the left as a reference point. Because it is very overgrown I couldn’t tell the origin point of the runoff. This is the only section of Wailupe Stream I have seen that looks like this. I have heard that the Stone Development site has channelled the water from going into Hao Street.
