Cetacean depredation on hook-and-line caught fish has become a frustratingly common occurrence for commercial and artisanal fishermen of the Pacific islands. Fishers from Nauru, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu and Cook Islands have recently reported that fish are being stolen by cetaceans from their lines with increased frequency, and this is exasperating them to the point that some of them have been tempted to kill or harm the “culprits” in the hope that it would solve the problem. In 2002, a workshop on “Cetacean Interactions With Commercial Longline Fisheries in the South Pacific Region: Approaches to Mitigation” was held in Apia, Samoa, to gauge the gravity of the situation and to identify ways of dealing with the problem. Hilo ‘Ahi Run Continues The surprisingly solid ‘ahi run that began in late November continued throughout January and into February. During the first week of February, the KAIMIOKEKAI boated nine fish one day, five another and a total of 34 fish from the school. The LAURIE MARIE 6 also had some good fishing days. Other boaters had catches of half a dozen fish and more. Some went out and came home empty with their boxes full of “ice poke.” Knowing where the school had been the day before and knowing how to search seemed to have made a big difference. All of these fish are thought to be part of the same school that moved in and then stayed between the area inside G-buoy and Maku‘u. Some fish came up…

Three of us went out of Wai‘anae Harbor at about 6:45 a.m. on our jet skis. By 9 a.m., I’d hooked a mahimahi and my brother-in-law Avin Antonio called me on the radio to report that he had hooked a small marlin. After bringing in my mahimahi, my friend Kel Kado and I went to see if Avin needed help. Forty-five minutes later, Avin called and said he’d landed the marlin and was going back in. I was very happy with the mahimahi I’d gotten, but after talking with Avin, who said he’d caught his marlin on the outside of the porpoise pile, which I was near at that time, I decided to troll my lures on the outside of the pile on my way back to the boat harbor.…

Sea turtles are a protected species; however, it’s OK to help reduce injury to a hooked or entangled sea turtle if an interaction occurs while fishing. The “Fishing Around Sea Turtles” program supports recreational fisheries through “turtle friendly” fishing gear, such as barbless circle hooks, and provides best-practice guidelines to assist hooked or entangled turtles. The program also includes practical fishing tips suggested by fishermen that may reduce the potential for interactions, and encourages reporting injured or dead turtles to NOAA’s sea turtle stranding program at 808-983-5730. December 1994 Another warning against eating fish caught off south Pacific islands was issued by officials of the health department today. Eleven cases have been reported in the second outbreak of fish poisoning from fish brought in from the south Pacific area, Dr. Richard K. C. Lee. director of public health, said. The signs and symptoms are similar to those that were reported in the first outbreak—nausea, vomiting. diarrhea, extreme pain in the arms and legs. Dr. Lee said. He pointed out that a sample of a portion of the fish has been obtained and an attempt will be made to identify it with the aid of Mr. Vernon E. Brock of the department of agriculture and forestry. RK68: Death by Fish Hook RK68 died months after breaking line. RK68 was a juvenile male monk seal suspected of having fishing line coming from its mouth. Charles Littnan, chief scientist with NOAA’s Seal Recovery Program, said RK68 was known to have been in the area of Hawai‘i island back in August. Volunteers and a worker from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary searched for the seal. They couldn’t find it. In December, Charles reported that RK68 was seen and appeared in good health. Charles theorizes that a fisherman could have gotten a strike. Perhaps the bite came at night. Not knowing it was a seal, the excited fisherman might have attempted to set the hook, and the line broke. Charles said that monk seals hooked internally are…

On February 13, 2013, Coast Guard investigators and a state hazardous materials crew responded to a report of a 55 gallon mystery drum on Makapu’u Beach, O‘ahu. The Hawaii State Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office notified the Coast Guard of the 55-gallon mystery drum with no markings and full of unknown material. Honolulu Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials team and representatives from the Coast Guard Incident Management Division responded to the report. The Fire Department removed the drum from the water onto the beach, where it was marked with caution tape. The Coast Guard accessed the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund and contracted the Pacific Environmental Corporation to conduct clean-up and removal efforts. Contractors removed the drum from the beach after determining that it was full of marine diesel fuel.…

The misadventure of the 2,000-lb Hana bull actually began several days prior to the attack at sea. Capt. Mark Miller and crew were working the ledges near shore when they spotted the bull on the beach of a small landlocked cove. The bull had apparently slid down the steep cliffs towering above during the night. The thick tropical vegetation had apparently slowed the animal’s descent and delivered the bull to the beach below unharmed but trapped. All About Bonefish, Sand Crabs and Family Fishing Aloha everyone! It has been more than a year since I wrote my last article. I felt that I had not caught any fish worthy of being featured in HA-WAII FISHING NEWS. I have been fishing from shore at every place I can go to on O‘ahu. I usually catch something every place I go, but nothing to get excited about. When I lived on the mainland and I shore fished all over Southern California, I found most of my fish within 25 yards of shore. This is proving to be true here in Hawai‘i, as well. Aloha Chuck, When I heard about our monk seals avoiding shoreline fish, I wondered if they are avoiding ciguatera. I also thought about the poison concentrating in breast milk and maybe making the seals feel sick all the time. My friends tell me ciguatera wasn’t here until the ’60s. They used to eat all the fish with no problem. We now know ciguatera is caused by a benthic dinoflagellate (a one-celled algae that uses a little whip to move around) that attaches to plants that are eaten by fish. The oil-soluble poison is “biotransformed” (made worse as the fish try to deal with it) and “bioaccumulated” (concentrated) on its way up the food chain. Our bodies sequester the poison in our livers and fat until it builds up and makes…

The most important blue-water sport fish belong to the tuna and billfish families, with representatives found throughout all tropical seas. Their predatory nature and large muscle reserves make them favorite targets for the offshore angler and the object of intense commercial fisheries. Tuna and billfish have much in common with each other and are much more closely related than many anglers suspect. Exactly how the tuna and billfish groups are related to each other can be displayed by a family tree, such as the one we have illustrated. All of these species belong to the same suborder, Scomberoidei, which consists of the swordfish, marlin and tuna families. At the end of each “branch” on the family tree is a number indicating the total number of species of fish that fall…

Help me solve a mystery–and, in the process, listen to the story of an important and historic blue marlin catch on a misidentified “made-in-Hawai‘i” fishing lure that traveled 5,000 miles from home. If we can solve the mystery, we can give long overdue credit to the artist/craftsman/fisherman whose lure could have change the course of big-game fishing. Did I say long overdue? The mystery is now 51 years old. But we recently came upon a very telling clue. It’s a photo of the misidentified lure, and it has distinctive characteristics that could lead someone to name the maker without doubt. In 1962, Capt. Is it just me, or do some of our favorite memories of fishing trips have to do with food? Over the years I’ve been blessed to go on many a fishing adventure. Each time I recall a trip, suddenly something to do with food pops into my head. On the first “Let’s Go Fishing” show that Hari Kojima and I went to Alaska, our guide prepared a shore lunch of fresh caught salmon. He wrapped fillets in aluminum foil and cooked them over a campfire right beside the river. My first “fish tacos” were eaten on the shore of Lake Guerrero in Mexico. I hate snakes. I believe they were put on Earth for three purposes–belts, bags and shoes–and maybe the occasional chili-cook-off. So, it was with keen interest that I tracked the results of my adopted state of Florida’s first-ever 2013 Python Challenge™. Yup, they trademarked the name. In mid-January, amid much fanfare, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) announced the contest that ran from January 10 to February 10. There were two winning categories: the longest snake; and the most snakes collected. While a permit is not required to slay serpents because they are not native or protected species, hunters signing up for the contest received a special permit.
