The fifth season is now complete, and the Aquahunters statewide progressive kayak fishing tournament, Makahiki 2012, has once again crowned three state champions. In the Dive Division, Chris Paglinawan outclassed a small but game group to gain his first title. In the Rec Division, Maui’s talented Jon Jon Tabon held off the tandem team of Brian Delmore and Adam Cabalo from Waiehu to claim Maui’s second Rec title in three years. Once again, Andy Cho claimed the Pro Division for the fifth straight season by cracking the 3,000-point barrier. Andy delivered another incredible season, setting new world records for tombo and hebi. Andy also captured two dream fish in one day when he landed a yellowfin ‘ahi and a Pacific blue marlin. Fifty-six years ago, in Honolulu, I stumbled upon the best buddy any fisherman could ever meet. At the time, I had no idea my sister’s best friend–a frequent visitor at our house–would become my lifelong companion. Later, she found out I loved to SCUBA dive and spear fish and became the recipient of some of my catches. Three years and many fish dinners later, she proposed and asked to be my lifetime buddy. Honestly, she did propose. At that time, I hadn’t the slightest idea of what the future with “Buddy” would be like. Some folks on the local fishing scene know that I have recently taken the job as Recreational Fisheries Specialist for NOAA Fisheries, a regional job representing Hawai‘i, American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Awesome Holiday Yellowfin Run In 2011, just before Christmas, a couple of large yellowfin came up outside of Hilo on trolling gear. We suggested at the time that this might be a good sign for the condition of our local stocks of yellowfin. We made this suggestion again in 2012, because 2012 was a good year for larger yellowfin for Hilo fishermen. We had a rather remarkable run of large yellowfin just before Christmas that lasted into the first two days of the New Year. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) closed the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area (FMA) to fishing for one year from Tuesday, January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2013, to allow the fish population to replenish itself. “Periodically closing areas to fishing was a practice used by early Hawaiians; it helped fish populations replenish themselves,” said William J. Aila Jr., DLNR chairperson. “We use a variation of that at Waikiki-Diamond Head for the same purpose. Closed years give fish a break from fishing pressure, and allow their populations to increase. Fishing experiences are then improved during open years.” The fisheries management area encompasses the near-shore waters between the ‘Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and from the high-water mark on shore…

At some time between when I am writing this and when you read it, Capt. Jeff Rogers will tag and release his 2,000th “jack.” We are hoping it is a giant trevally (G.T.) or bluefin trevally (B.T.) because those are the two most sought-after fish of Hawai‘i’s jack family. More likely, it will be a greater amberjack or an almaco jack. The two amberjack varieties are both tough fighters and worthy adversaries, but their tendency to carry ciguatoxin and be wormy make them not as popular as the G.T. and B.T. Number 2K could be a butaguchi, an island jack, or a bigeye trevally because Jeff and his anglers have caught a few of each beginning back many, many years. Freshwater Bassin’ on Lake Wilson I’ve had several people ask me about the best lure for catching peacock bass. Peacock bass feed exclusively on smaller fish, so any lure or fly that looks or acts like a little fish will work fine. That said, we need to concentrate on the habits of the peacock bass. Here’s the bad news. During the winter in Hawai‘i, the water temperature hovers around 70 to 73 degrees. Peacock bass are tropical fish, and the real aggressive action won’t start till the water temperature reaches 78 to 80 degrees. Yes, they will have to eat, but fishing will be slow. Peacock bass like warm water and sunshine. They seem to be more active in the middle of the day rather than at daybreak and dusk.…

Hunter, a Simi Valley resident, and her husband, George, were vacationing in Hawai‘i. With nothing more in mind than catching a marlin, her husband chartered the SUNDOWNER out of Kailua-Kona. “I’ve been fishing since I was 7 or 8 years old,” said the petite woman. “All I wanted to do was catch a marlin. I didn’t care what size.” Hunter didn’t get her marlin. But at 10 a.m., just two hours out, she did hook something.…

Aquarium Society Hooks Recreational Guys The Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) said that recreational fishermen are not getting their fair share of no-fishing legislation. MASNA said that “anti-aquarium fishery activists argue the aquarium fishery statewide is ‘devastating’ the reefs of Hawai‘i.” The marine aquarium fishery catches about 400,000 fish yearly. Recreational guys kill approximately 425,000 fish. MASNA bemoans the fact that the recreational fishery is less studied and less regulated than they are. MASNA said that 18 aquarium-related laws were introduced to Hawai‘i’s 2012 legislative session. Seven of these measures were new bills, four were new resolutions and the remaining seven moved over from the 2011 legislative session. Of the 18 measures, seven wanted a statewide closure of the aquarium fishery. The rest of the measures sought to…

Hawai‘i has a characteristic environment designed to encourage investigation of the great outdoors and the abundant resources–both natural and introduced–we have to offer. Unique forests complement striking seascapes, accommodating clear-water oceans, and colorful flora and fauna populate from mountaintop to the sea’s horizon. Here in Hawai‘i, hunting has had a long tradition that for political reasons is being eradicated. For a dependent island economy, this is at best senseless, and an affront to cultural, traditional and recreational endeavors. It is a blunder of significance for the long-term health and safety of our forests when you pit one constituent against another with little benefit ultimately for the forest itself. South Florida District Manager Jeffrey Becker, along with postal officials and a crowd of about 75 Ted Williams’ fans gathered at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida, for the dedication of the Ted Williams stamp. Ted was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. In 1969, he became manager of the Washington Senators and was named American League Manager of the Year. After four years, he retired and moved to Florida to pursue a lifelong passion for fishing. Although known for being one of baseball’s greatest, Ted was also known for snagging fishing records in the Florida Keys.
