Dear Mr. Johnston, Recently in Kailua Kona, my wife and I spotted two unusual filefish associated with the pelagic jellyfish, Thysanostoma spp. There were two fish, one about 6 inches and the second about 3 inches. The jellyfish with which they were associated was swimming slowly about 5 feet below the surface. Unable to identify the fish from available field guides, I e-mailed the attached pictures to Jack Randall, among others. He was also unable to identify the fish and referred my photos to Bruce Mundy, another Honolulu-based ichthyologist. Using a picture from Gerald Allen’s 2012 "Guide to Reef Fishes of the East Indies," Dr. Mundy feels comfortable identifying our fish as immature unicorn filefish, A/uterus monoceros. January 5, 2011, was a beautiful, glassy day off of the North Shore of O'ahu. I headed out to the J-buoy with my two friends, John Puakea and Guy Pere. When we arrived at the buoy, we started "iggy-jiggin"' with out much luck. After we picked up a couple of aku, I knew that we were in for a long, hot day. I decided to transfer all of the warm drinks and beer into a cooler. The drinks were slimy from a previous trip, so I started rinsing them off in the ocean. That’s when I (accidentally!) dropped a Heineken over board. It was one of only three. John and Guy said, "Hey, that was your beer!" Jet holes are one of the great mysteries of lure history. It all comes down to one word: why? Why would someone think a lure would be improved by drilling holes from front to back? Lures with no jet holes seem to catch just as many fish as lures with jet holes, so why bother going to all of the extra trouble and expense of putting jet holes in lures? And why do fishermen think the jet holes are really doing something that fish like? My own history with jet lures goes all the way back to the original "jets" of the 1940s. NOAA Fisheries has just made a great hire and has given our region the first full-time regional Recreational Fisheries Specialist in the nation. David Itano is just the fisherman for the job and for this important position. He accepted the post in September and is housed within the Sustainable Fisheries Division of the Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIRO) in Honolulu. He is responsible for outreach, education, analysisand advocacy for all matters relating to recreational and non-commercial fishing and fishermen in the region that includes American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as well as the Main Hawaiian Islands and other U.S. -affiliated islands. This is a federal position titled as a "recreational fishing" specialist in contrast to a "commercial fishing" position. Many of us in the region…

We are now conducting two brand-new projects that we hope we can count on you for input, support and assistance: 1) Investigation of Estuarine Habitats; and 2) Sport Fish Restoration Studies (a.k.a. DAR Tagging Project). Our daughter Michelle gave her dad (Eric Ross) a four-hour fishing trip with Bite Me Fishing Charters in Kana, Hawai'i on July 3, 2012, for his birthday while vacationing on the Big Island. While trolling on the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean, the rubber band holding the line on Eric’s pole snapped. A fish was hooked on Eric’s line! The excitement and battle began! Eric quickly learned it was a marlin and fighting it was work; but his adrenaline was flowing! Capt. James Johnson and first mate Nick Shand must've known it was a large marlin on the end of the line. A Scottish fisherman has set a Guinness World Record by recovering the oldest-known message in a bottle, besting the previous record by more than five years. On the COPIOUS, skipper Andrew Leaper, 43, discovered the bottle floating east of the Shetland Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. It was set adrift more than 98 years ago in· June 1914 by Capt. CH Brown of the Glasgow School of Navigation, the BBC reported. Guinness World Records has confirmed that the bottle is, in fact, the oldest ever recovered. It was an interesting summer for Kane'ohe with some spurts of good fishing and unusual fishing conditions-like lots of mahimahi. The fishermen were not complaining because the prices for white-meat fish were very good, which happens every summer. Overall, the season passed with out any major incidents. The Windward side saw. fairly mild weather associated with the La Nina conditions, which were predicted for this year. The coming season calls for El Nino type conditions, which produce very different weather patterns, but that can change, too. Dear ·chuck, We wanted to send you a recap and some pictures of the third installment of our Alaskan adventure. We weren't able to make it up last year (missing the huge run!). This time we went up a few days early to drive up to Denali National Park. We certainly had luck on our side. The air and weather were crystal-clear the day we made the four-hour drive from Anchorage, and we got spectacular views of Denali (Mount McKinley) on the way there, which apparently only about 30 percent of visitors have the fortune to see. The next day, we took an all-day bus tour into the park, helping us appreciate the splendor of the park as well as those who had the toughness, resourcefulness and vision to live…

This is especially true on the island of O'ahu where there are many anglers and no real "secret" fishing spots. The keys to winning seem to be possessing good casting and fighting skills, fishing at a decent fishing spot and having experience. The bottle floated around the Pacific Ocean for 14 years. Zuri Pommerenk was 10 years old and going to school at Kilauea School when the bottle was released. "We just got word two weeks ago that his bottle was found at Coos Bay, Oregon," said Steve Soltysik, supervising the wax sealing of messages by Island School students at the campus. That bottle was one of 433 bottles released in November 1996 by the crew aboard the HOKULE'A, the Hawai'i sailing canoe, during one of its interisland visits to Kaua'i. With everyone from state and federal fishery managers, Congress and the international community discussing marine debris, the potential impacts it could have, what they're doing about it and what might happen, I feel it’s going to take a well thought out, comprehensive action plan if we're going to have any chance at all at protecting Hawai'i’s fisheries and fishermen. Marine debris didn't just happen overnight, but it certainly got significantly worse since the tsunami in Japan. Eighteen months later, there is no federal or state plan that outlines what to do. Contingency Plans Being Prepared To Intercept Floating Dock Before It Reaches Land The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), the state’s lead agency for responding to reported possible Japan tsunami marine debris in Hawai'i, is coordinating with NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard to identify the current location of a 30-by 50-foot floating dock that was last seen on Wednesday, September 19, by fishermen off the north coast of Moloka'i. The dock is believed to be identical to three others reported missing from Japan after the March 2011 tsunami. Another one recently came ashore on an Oregon beach earlier this year. "DLNR’s priority, with the critical help of the public and federal partners, is to re-find this large floating object, which is a hazard to vessels at sea and…

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold a public hearing to adopt a new rule-Chapter 13-60.4, WestHawaii Regional Fishery Management Area, Hawai'i (WHRFMA), and amend regulations of the following Hawaii Administrative Rules (HAR): Chapter 13-54, Puako Bay and Puako Reef Fisheries Management Area; Chapter 13-57, Keauhou Bay Fisheries Management Area; and Chapter 13-75-12.4, Lay Nets. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive relevant information, opinion and testimonies on the following proposed rule and amendments. Chapter 13-60.4, West Hawai'i Regional Fishery Management Area, Hawai'i. Aloha Ellen & Chuck, On October 7th, a group of ·12 divers and supporting family members (total about 25 people) from our FB spearfishing group participated in a beach clean-up, fun dive and BBQ at Makua Beach. On past dives, I noticed the high level of garbage on the rocky side of the beach (toward Ko 'Olina side) where it is frequented and camped by the usual fishermen and shorecasters. We were able to haul seven truckloads of garbage to the nearest park bathroom (for pickup) at Ka'ena Point bathroom. I'm not blaming anyone (particular fishermen) for the garbage, I just want to share this as an advisement to the fishing community of our efforts and so they keep in mind to bring back their garbage with them.
