Part 28, via a mandatory safety examination. While there are a few options of how to demonstrate this compliance, having a current Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Decal (not more than two years old) is the most straightforward method. The billfish catch numbers dropped almost 50 percent from July to August. Only six blue marlin were weighed during the month. The largest weighed 608.6 lbs. Another two were tagged and released and two shortbill spearfish were weighed, bringing the monthly billfish total to 10, tied for lowest total of the year to date. Three 'ahi over 100 lbs were weighed. The largest weighed 198. 7 lbs and was the harbor's third largest of the year to date. There were also 248 mahimahi and 90 ono recorded. ‘What Up’ With the CUZ? Catch a Triple! Three Tournaments in One! The Hilo Trollers held a safe and successful offshore tournament on Sunday, August 5. The monthly tournament was combined with the Dodd Balock Memorial Tournament to honor a former Hilo Trailers president-to-be, Dodd Balock. The tournament ran concurrently with the Hawaii Island Contractors' Association, Bank of Hawaii, Honsador Lumber Scholarship Fishing Tournament. Ten boats entered the Trailers tournament, and all of these boats also qualified for the Balock Tournament. Nine boats landed 19 flag fish: one marlin, two 'ahi, 10 ono, and six qualifying mahimahi were weighed in. I was fishing with my uncle and coach Kahai, reading the latest Hawaii Fishing News. When the fish bit, I was putting the bell on the rod and so I felt the full force. Aloha Chuck! On July 15, I finally landed my first 'ahi from my jet-ski! Two weeks prior I got a call from my friend, and he said, "Eh, my dad has this lure that he like you try out." I picked it up from him, brought it home and was deciding how to skirt it. My wife came along and said, "Why don't you let me pick the skirts? Then you're really going to catch fish!" I laughed and said, "Whatevers." A couple of days later we ended up at P.O.P. Before my wife went in, I said I could fit three skirts on the lure. Off she went. The 41 st Annual Lana'i Rendezvous was held on August 17 and 18. Thirty-eight boats entered. Fishing started on Thursday night at midnight, and "stop fishing" was at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Mane le Small Boat Harbor. The largest fish caught came in on the RATCH'IT, captained by Scott Texeira of Kula. Scott and his team caught their 197-16 marlin outside of Hana by M-buoy. This was the largest marlin of the tournament and the only one caught during the event. The TIFFANY LEE, captained by Russell Pohas of Wailuku, brought in the largest 'ahi. Aloha. The 16th Annual 'Ohana Fishing Tournament was held on August 17, 18 and 19, 2012, over the Admission Day Weekend. There were six different divisions: Men; Women; Teens; Kupuna (seniors); Children; and 'Ohana (family). In addition, the Hawaii Islands Fisheries Group provided prizes for their tag-and-release and barbless hook program. Representatives from the DLNR (Fisheries Education) answered many questions and handed out fishing education information to the public. Chuck, Here is a picture of the 'ahi that looks like a bluefin. It is shaped just like a yellowfin and when we cut it open it looked like yellowfin-no fat content-and-the belly cavity was normal.
