■ My wife, Suzanne Gustavson, was out of commission for about a month with a bad back that began during the first week of the summer tournament season here in Kona. She made a big comeback on her first day back aboard the TOPSHAPE. Here is the story. The day started normally with first mate John Bennett setting up the morning lure pattern. Drivers License for Boats ■ The DLNR’s Board of Land and Natural Resources has ruled that Hawai‘i boat drivers will have to have an approved safety education certificate, a.k.a. boat license. The DLNR estimates that it will take persons about three hours to complete the free online course approved by the National Association of State Boat Law Administrators. An approved U.S. Coast Guard-sponsored classroom course taught by local U.S. Power Squadrons takes about 12 hours. The DLNR claims that the safety course license is needed because it has paid $860,000 to remove boats run aground or sunk in the last 10 years. This was the same claim that caused the DLNR to mandate insurance for all moored vessels in the state. Insurance companies often require safety courses before writing boat…

Coming Out of the Starting Blocks: Extended Lag Time Rearranges Genetic Diversity in Introduced Marine Fish ■ Biological invasions with known histories are rare, especially in the sea. Fifty-five years ago, the Hawai‘i Division of Fish and Game (now the Division of Aquatic Resources) undertook an ambitious fishery-enhancement program by releasing 12 species of snapper and grouper in the Hawaiian Islands. This unintentional “experiment” resulted in the introduction of three reef fish: Lutjanus fulvus (blacktail snapper, or to‘au); Cephalopholis argus (peacock hind, or roi); and Lutjanus kasmira (blue-striped snapper, or ta‘ape). While the introductions were well intentioned, these species have not become popular food fish in Hawai‘i and are now largely viewed as a threat to native Hawaiian fauna. ■ On June 28, at 0500 hours, the 22nd Annual Fire Fighters Fishing Tournament started. With 22 boats heading in all directions–to OTEC buoy all the way to South Point–it was a fun day of fishing. The radio was fairly quiet except for some inside jokes. All types of hook-and-line fishing were allowed in this tournament, and all fish had to be weighed or the weigh slip had to be brought to the venue site by 1730 hours. The first to weigh in their fish was the team on the INAMUKOH. They boated two ono weighing 26.5 and 13 lbs and a 1.5-lb aku. The MIKI‘OI trolled south and completed a mini grand slam with a spearfish, ono, mahimahi and ‘ahi weighing in at 27.5, 28.5, 8.5 and 5.5 lbs,…

Dear Chuck, Here are two quick pics, the second one shows the pectoral sticking up while we were towing it home. It was rigid, the tail rope is NOT holding it up. In fact we could not even get the rope over it to that position without uncleating it and passing it above it with a gaff. It was 14' 6" tip to tip. Girth was 76" fork length was 144" with many witnesses. How else can I tell if it is a black marlin? I threw the spearfish away because it stank so badly. How much you guess it weighs? ■ The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will open state marine waters on Saturday, September 1, 2012, for the 2012-2013 bottomfish fishing year. The current 2011-2012 fishing year remains open and will close August 31, 2012. Late Reports Result in Fine The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) reminds all commercial bottomfish fishermen that their main Hawaiian islands (MHI) Deep-Seven trip reports are due within five days after the trip end date. Beginning September 1, 2012, fishers who submit a late trip report will receive a Civil Resources Violation notice. Each late report will result in a $15 fine. HIBT Week ■ Another HIBT week is history. Amazingly, this tournament has been around 53 years. I was 6 years old when it started. This year there were participants who were there in the beginning. Congratulations to Peter Fithian, staff and volunteers on a very successful tourney. One hundred five marlin were caught over five days for a 52.5-percent catch rate, which is extremely good for five days of fishing. There were many stories during the week including the one about the captain who went to the head, got locked in and couldn’t kick himself out when a marlin hit a lure and screamed out line; and the team member who went overboard trying to tag a blue and got left in the water until his teammates tagged the fish.…

Hilo Casting Club Hosts 108 Shorecasters in its 37th Annual Tournament ■ The Hilo Casting Club held its 37th Annual Fishing Tournament from July 10 to 14, 2012. HCC was blessed with another successful tournament even though a storm approaching the state brought heavy rains to the east side of the Big Island. The 108 participants all enjoyed a great time of fishing, fun and fellowship. Many mahalos to the sponsors who have supported this Hilo Casting Club event for the past 37 years. All of the billfish in the marlin family have two distinct keels on either side of the tail, rather than the single keel found in swordfish. This family consists of three genera that include the marlin, sailfish and spearfish. Genus: Makaira (3 species) Species (Common Names): Black marlin*, [a‘u], Indo-Pacific blue marlin*, [a‘u, kajiki, swordfish], Atlantic blue marlin. These are the fish most people associate with “big-game fishing.” They are the tackle-busting black and blue marlin of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Both species can and do exceed 1,500 lbs in weight. Hilo Trollers July Tournament ■ The Hilo Trollers held their regular monthly tournament on Sunday, July 15. The weather was good, and some nice-sized fish came up. Nine boats entered, and six caught qualifying flag fish. No marlin were landed, but one ‘ahi, one mahimahi and eight ono were weighed in. The largest ‘ahi and largest fish overall was a 96.6-lb tuna landed on the SHERRISA 5 by Capt. Jared Miyake and angler Randal Yoneda. ■ “Amazing” best described the Fourth Annual North Shore Fishing Tournament, held on June 30. The community came together for the event to raise money for the restoration of the Hanalei Pier. Once again, there was the Mike Sakamoto Challenge, which raises money for Mike’s foundation. The lucky angler who landed the biggest aku won a trip to Las Vegas. There were 56 boats entered this year. The fish gods shined down on the fishermen during this tournament. The action was nonstop. At 6:06 a.m., Team 27 called in with a 2-lb aku.
