■ Welina. Every year, the west side of O‘ahu anxiously awaits Ahi Fever, the largest fishing tournament in the state of Hawai‘i with 200 boats entered. Ahi Fever begins on Friday, with blessings from Pastor “Bird” Mahelona and the captains’ briefing.
On Saturday, June 16, at 4 a.m. boat inspections began. Excitement dawned on the office where Bonita Swift prepared for the day with last-minute crew add-ons, waivers and a “sound check.” Then came the countdown of the 15th Annual Ahi Fever. Wai‘anae’s beloved Polly Grace, also known as “Granny,” started this grand event. With the announcement of, “Five, four, three, two, one!” the boats shot off at the start of Ahi Fever.
