An Island Hunter’s Perspective ■ As I cleaned dishes from the evening meal, I determined it was time to make a decision on the following day’s activities. Practice for our Kupuna League softball team was scheduled for 9 a.m., but it was now seven days into the spring turkey season and I had yet to get out. The decision was easy. I sent a note to the coach, made lunch, packed the truck and hit the rack. It had been wet in Hilo over the preceding weeks, and there was even snow on the mountain. ■ The Hilo Trollers June 3 tournament was postponed due to small-craft warnings, so there are no tournament results to report this month. The Hilo Trailers president and weighmaster abided by the club rules and called all the entering captains to let them know that the tournament would be postponed. This issue of HFN went to press before the rescheduled June tournament results were available. We will report those results next month. Safety must come first! ■ It is a fisherman’s dream, the Holy Grail finding some sort of floating debris that holds a school offish close by. For small fish, the flotsam is a form of protection from predators. In the otherwise unprotected top layer of the sea, it offers the only protection available other than balling up. The size of the debris doesn’t matter. I once came across a huge school of mahimahi that had been attracted to a floating plastic milk crate. Another time, a 3-foot strand of rope produced six pieces of mahimahi in the 25- to 45-lb range. ■ In anticipation of this year’s 37th Annual Hilo Casting Club Tournament (July 10 to 14, 2012), a major milestone was achieved by last year’s Largest Ulua Category winner, Mel Hirayama. Not only did Mel finally win that prestigious tournament to boost an already extraordinary shorecasting career that has spanned four decades, but he also won it by landing his seventh 100-plus-lb ulua! That’s right-his seventh! There may be other anglers out there who have equaled this feat or are close to doing so, but Mel’s accomplishments surely cannot go unrecognized. I was humbled and privileged and I thanked God for giving me the opportunity to witness firsthand Mel’s seventh 100-plus ulua catch. Aloha Chuck, It’s me again. I had the weekend (March 11) off, so I decided to sleep at the beach on the south shore. The tide was perfect for throw net in the evening and the next morning till noon, so I headed down to my favorite throw net spot with my MRE, water, clothes and, of course, my throw net in my back pack. I arrived at the spot and observed the shoreline for about 10 minutes. I was excited to see 'ama'ama, kala, manini and maiko, all swimming and feeding not 30 feet from the sand! Big Waves and Giant Fish ■ I'd like to begin my story back in 1992 when I was 12-years-old. I was exploring with my three prong and I noticed that the world under the sea is very beautiful and tranquil: the colors, the silence, just me and my three-prong. I only had a small taste of it. I started body boarding and got really good at it right out of high school. I moved to Moloka'i with my Uncle Leroy Wong, and I began three pronging again. When I lived in Halawa Valley, every now and then a boat would pull into the bay. One day it was Uncle Walter Naki. He asked me if I wanted to go “backside” with them and three prong off the boat. ■ Just because you reel in a barracuda in the Pacific doesn’t mean you have caught a “Pacific barracuda.” The fish of that name, Sphyraena argentea, lives only along the west coast from Central America to Central California and rarely, if ever, makes it to the Central Pacific. The difference was very important to Big Islander Roy Farber when he pulled in a kaku off Mahukona and thought he might have set an IGFA record for Pacific barracuda. Roy’s kaku weighed 28.2 lbs on the scales at The Charter Desk in Honokohau Harbor. He caught the fish on 25-lb test line, which puts it in the IGFA 30-lb class. That’s about 7 lbs bigger than the 20.8-lb IGFA 30-lb class record Pacific barracuda but, alas, way smaller than the 79.…

Aloha Fellow Whippers, I finally got a little action worth writing about. There was an ulua shoreline fishing tournament recently, and most spots had plenty poles. On the morning of Friday, April 20, I was on my way to Goat Island when I started talking with a “local” about the weekend tournament. He was the same guy that five years ago saw my son and me returning from “Goats” with two beautiful ulua ('omilu) weighing 16 and 11 lbs I was joking about entering the contest, and he said if I caught an ulua on Goats it would not count; only fish caught off the mainland (island) would qualify. Peacock Bass in Paradise ■ For those not familiar with a Tenkara rod, it’s a form of Japanese flyfishing rod that uses no reel. Consisting of a 12- to 14-foot extension pole, flyline, leader and fly, it is used for catching 6- to 12-inch trout in the mountain streams of Japan. Tenkara rod fishing is becoming popular with American fly fishermen targeting small trout and pan fish. It’s just fun catching small fish on a superlight, long, flexible extension pole. The Tenkara offers the simplest form of flyfishing. I love targeting bluegill, small peacock bass and red devils (fish under 1 lb) with my Tenkara rod. DLNR Planning to Ban Scuba Spearfishing! ■ Scuba spearfishing will be banned in the West Hawaii Fishery Management Area if the DLNR has its druthers. Kona Biologist Will i am Walsh supported the ban, calling it a pilot project, and hopes that the scuba spearfishing ban will be exported around the state. The West Hawaii Fishery Management Area began in 1998 and stretches for 147 miles of shoreline, encompassing the entire Kona Coast from South Point to 'Upolu Point. A public scuba spearing hearing will be held this summer and the DLNR will make its decision by this fall. William said that the West Hawaii Fisheries Council recommended the ban as another way to increase fish sustainability. Spearfishing from shore or free diving would not be banned. It would be…

Bula Vinaka ■ In April’s HFN, I told you about a Hobie Cat fishing adventure. The next day at about 4:45 a.m., security was knocking on my door. “Niki, wake up. You going fishing today!” I got up and grabbed two poles. One was my 7-foot Phantom/Fenwick spinner with a 750 Penn reel, and the other was a Penn stand-up Tuna Stick with a 454 Newell reel.
