Shore Diving Dream Come True I woke up in the morning to the jingles of my Droid phone singing. It was my dive partner, Brad Kepo‘o, calling. He wanted to dive and asked if I wanted to go. On 2/6/12, our charter was Melissa Bingham and her family on vacation from Idaho. They had booked a private charter on our boat, the MARJORIE ANN, and showed up early so we left Ma‘alaea Harbor and headed south to the Kanaio Coast for some shallow bottom fishing. Bula vinaka. I was sitting on the south side of Qualito Island, at Castaway’s Island Resort. Castaway’s was the first offshore resort built in 1969, 12 to 15 miles west of Nadi in the Mamanuca group of islands. As I sat on the south-side beach, I looked west toward the outer reef break 2 or 3 miles out and wished I could get out there. I made my way around the island, whipping a 1⁄2-oz gold Kastmaster from the beach. The bite was really good for the short 45 minutes it took me to walk around the island. When the glamour game fish aren’t biting, enjoy your trip by catching the other fun fish. Know where to find an ‘opelu ko‘a, and you’ll know where to go to keep your rods bent, reels buzzing and fishing buddies smiling. Just for starters–and please don’t tell anyone this–I love to catch ‘opelu. I am even content to endure the many little jabs and pricks from those sharp-pointed little hooks that always seem to know how to find you. There is the anticipation of spotting the school balled up below you on your fish finder, or seeing them nibbling at the surface early in the morning when the sea is flat. What’s Your Line? Standard fishing equipment for freshwater bank fishing includes a pole, a line and a hook–and sometimes a float. Too often, I see all kinds of attention paid to the hook and not sufficient attention paid to the line. The general attitude assigns little importance to the line used in still fishing. It seems that as long as one can attach the hook and heave some bait, the visibility of the line in the water does not matter. This is wrong. Imagine you are a fish. Bula Chuck, Here’s some recent fishing news from my “cuz,” Brendan Yee, in Fiji. I fish with him every time I go to the South Pacific Islands. We went out two years ago at Pacific Harbor but lost every ulua we hooked. Our two friends Callan and Rosie pulled up four ulua weighing between 30 and 50 lbs and a 6-foot whitetip shark to boot, all with poppers. Bren and I switched to lighter spinning gear and pulled in a dozen white papio and ‘omilu ranging from 3 to 12 lbs. A couple of our fish actually took longer to boat than it took for Callan and Rosie to haul in their G.T.s. Really good fun, bro! Expansion Advised The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council has recommended that the humpback whale sanctuary consider expanding its focus from humpback whales and their habitat to the ecosystem as a whole. The recommendation is part of the sanctuary’s management plan review process that is currently underway and comes out of reports presented to the council from working groups that have been considering new strategies to better inform sanctuary management. The sanctuary is engaged in a process to review, evaluate and update its management plan and will release a draft management plan for public comment in 2013. The council asked the sanctuary, which is jointly managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), to look at…

121 Days and 2,188 The Third Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Great Marlin Race was won by “West Marie,” a 170-lb Pacific blue marlin caught by angler Ed Abele and tagged by Marlin Parker aboard his boat, the MARLIN MAGIC II. The electronic tag, sponsored through a West Marine BlueFuture™ Conservation Grant, was deployed on the marlin on August 8, 2011, off the Big Island’s west coast. Stanford University marine biologists reported that the tag was released from the marlin after 121 days, at a distance of 2,188 nautical miles from where the fish was tagged, south of the equator and about 700 miles east-northeast of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. Papa John Sadly Honokohau Harbor lost one of its most revered and humble fishermen, Capt. John Llanes Sr., to cancer on January 23, 2012. He was one of those rare fishermen, without a sense of entitlement, who never had a bad word to say about anyone. When someone caught a bigger fish, or won a tournament, John was genuinely happy for them. He knew that every dog has its day, but not one dog can have every day. Whether he had an epic day or a zero day, he knew he was going to go fishing the next day. John knew the value of humility because he had humble beginnings. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announced that the open fishing season for rainbow trout in the Koke‘e Public Fishing Area (PFA) on Kaua‘i will begin Saturday, June 16, 2012. Anglers may fish daily during the daylight hours between sunrise and sunset from June 16 to September 30, 2012. “Trout fishing at Pu‘u Lua Reservoir in Koke‘e has always been a popular family activity, and anglers will have a chance to catch trout from last year’s stocking,” said William J. Aila Jr., DLNR. Last year, 777 anglers caught 70 trout. The largest trout measured 191⁄4 inches in length and weighed 5 lbs. Fishing was poor due to the closure of the trout hatchery in 2009. Bula Al, Finally went fishing with Callan, Rosie and Rick last Sunday. We decided on chasing tuna first. When we spotted birds, we found the “boil up.” It was good fun as we cast metal jigs into the boil up. We landed five yellowfin, three mack tunas and one “skippy.” After about two hours of that, it went quiet–really quiet–as the tuna went deep. We decided to cast poppers for G.T.s. After much direction and coaching from Callan and Rosie, I landed a monster. Well, it was a monster to me as it was my first G.T. in the boat. Boy, that fella can fight! But lest you think this odd interim technology will soon become a part of the daily lives of boaters and fishermen, calm yourself. This is one area where you needn’t worry. Let’s examine the reality of what hybrid technology means for boating. Disadvantages of an IC (Internal Combustion Engine)/Electric Hybrid Batteries are extremely expensive to replace and contain hazardous materials that are toxic to the environment. They are expensive to recycle and are only about 85-percent efficient. High weight and bulk results in limited capacity, which in turn limits both performance and endurance. Hawaiian monk seals feed primarily on bottom fish (including eels and flatfish), crustaceans (lobster, crab and shrimp) and mollusks (octopus). Their diet is known to include octopus, lobster and fish, including eels and flatfish. Their prey is typically found on the seabed in shallow water. The coral reefs of the Hawaiian Atoll lagoons and bordering sand areas are the prime foraging habitat (Kenyon and Rice, 1959). It’s been over 30 years since my first monk seal sighting, and today we have an accomplished reproductive population of seals. The seals are rebounding in the main Hawaiian islands (MHI). But what happens when their preferred food sources are diminished to unsustained levels? What happens when Nature sets its own carrying capacity for monk seals and reproduction ceases to a crawl? Civic Clubs Petition for Green Sea Turtle Delisting President Soulee Stroud of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs (AOHCC) petitioned the secretaries of Commerce and the Interior to classify the Hawaiian green sea turtle, or honu, as a discrete population segment (DPS) and then remove it from the Endangered Species Act (ESA) list. The green sea turtle has been on the ESA list since 1978. The species has been considered threatened throughout its range, except for Florida and the Pacific coast of Mexico where breeding populations are listed as endangered. A DPS is the smallest division of a species permitted to be protected under the ESA. All Hawaiian green sea turtles nest in the Hawai‘i archipelago, the majority in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Tagging studies show that the adults remain…

With its ability to attract moisture and clog fuel filters, it’s no wonder America’s boaters have not been thrilled with ethanol in gasoline, which today is most commonly found as a 10% blend and known as E10 at the gas pump. America’s desire for renewable fuels is growing, but recent Department of Energy tests on boat engines showed that increasing the amount of ethanol to 15% doesn’t work for boats. While higher ethanol content has been approved by the EPA for 2001 and newer cars and light trucks, E15 is not legal to use in boats and other gas-powered equipment. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) suggests that butanol, an alcohol with a characteristic banana-like odor typically made from corn and beet byproducts, may be an answer. Unlike…

On the west side of O’ahu, we heard a story of the “local braddahs fishing” and the great white shark. I meet the local braddahs for breakfast, and found that these guys are awesome! These fishermen of the sea have connections to the water, and yet they continue to be grounded, humble and very funny! Remember their names: Dominick “Dom” Gaballo, and Addison Toki. The Dads Dom’s dad, though he has passed, was a fisherman. The two agreed that fishing is “in the blood.” Dom’s mother gave birth to him on the ocean. Yes, he was born on the water.
