Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area Opens ■ The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announced the opening of the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area O‘ahu to fishing for one year beginning January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012. The fishery management area encompasses the near-shore waters between the ‘Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards, or to the edge of the fringing reef if one occurs beyond 500 yards. “The stretch of shoreline and near-shore waters between the Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse are very popular for fishing and recreation among residents and visitors,” said William J. The misadventure of the 2,000-lb Hana bull actually began several days prior to the attack at sea. Capt. Mark Miller and crew, while out fishing, were working the ledges near shore when they spotted the bull on the beach of a small landlocked cove. The bull had apparently slid down the steep cliffs towering above during the night. The thick tropical vegetation had apparently slowed the animal’s descent and delivered the bull to the beach below unharmed but trapped. Days later, driven by the lack of water and a natural will to survive, the bull made a decision to swim out of its predicament. What happened next can be read in “Hawai‘i’s Offshore Hunters” book. But do not worry, it was a temporary event. Lobsters will be back next year,” he said. In 1990, lobstermen were not happy. Lobsters did not come back! Dr. Polovina was not only embarrassed but also under pressure from frustrated fishermen. He had to find the real reason for the missing lobsters. Pass on the Mana‘o Whether you are fishing from a boat, or fishing from the shoreline, there is always a bit of knowledge that can be passed on to the next fisherman. On November 10, an excited fisherman named Daniel Alisna came to my office to weigh his first ‘omilu. While we were hanging the fish on the scales, Daniel said that he was new to fishing but wanted to learn as much as he could. Daniel’s wife told me that her husband had been fishing on Kailua Pier and that some of the local fishermen on the pier had taken Daniel under their wings and taught him a little of what they know. ■ My introduction to the world of fishing came at the early age of 3. The year was 1957, and we were at Lake Cachuma, which is located outside of Santa Barbara, California. My parents rented a boat and found a little cove that looked promising. Time for Sportsmen To Own Conservation ■ Should Hawai‘i have an organized and funded citizen hui that oversees, monitors and guides fish and wildlife conservation? With a state hem-orrhaging from fiscal deficits, that is about as realistic as catching a gorilla ‘ahi on a manini bamboo pole. In this conservation battle, fishermen and hunters are not without gaffs and ammunition. Hawai‘i outdoor sportsmen have the right to demand conservation involvement by taking control of their Sportsmen Trust Fund money. Hawai‘i outdoor users increasingly complain about the DLNR’s public input ethic of “don’t ask, just tell.” Public involvement has been sliced and diced to the minimum obligatory “hear-it-now listening sessions,” as was the case with the DLNR’s recent rollout of the Public Land Development Corporation. Hilo Trollers Spring Meeting The Hilo Trollers will hold their spring meeting on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at 6 p.m. in Wailoa Pavilion 1. At that meeting, the Trollers will begin organizing the 2012 trolling tournament season. 2011 paid members will be able to vote at this meeting. A new president and board will be elected, tournament dates will be approved, and any rule changes proposed by the 2011 board will be considered. Hilo Trollers is a small “local-style” fishing club that operates on the commitment and goodwill of the volunteers on the board, the weigh-in crew and radio control. ■ During the Obake Shootout III, held October 28, 29 and 30, 2011, Norman and Cameron Kunimura (Norman’s younger son), Shannon Valdez and I were a team. Norman and Shannon were the designated fishermen, Cameron was assistant to the gaffman, and I was the “Masta Bait Catcher” (well, the guys could catch bait, too). We planned to fish at the very northwest point of O‘ahu. It certainly is a place to enjoy and appreciate the majestic realm of the island’s beauty. Kapua Bay, Kau District, Hawai‘i Island ■ We just happened to be camping at our friends’ rustic but newly restored (after massive tsunami damage) beach house at Kapua Bay for Thanksgiving with several other families, when Hano, the caretaker of this south Kona coastline, invited us to participate in the First Annual Kapua Roi (Cephalopholis argus) Eradication Spearfishing Tournament, to be held on Saturday, November 19. My 17-year-old son, Ian, was immediately game. He quickly recruited his cousin ‘Ola (13) and his “Uncle” Colby. Because these three had come prepared to do some spear fishing for fun, they were not completely outfitted with all the gear necessary for a fourhour dive tournament. Time Flew? About 25 years ago, we became enthralled with a program named “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” and we followed through with presenting it to whomsoever was listening. Originally the program began with the intent to provide an alternative to school kids and older people that had extra time on their hands and who could be coaxed into enjoying the bounty of Mother Nature. It took almost 10 years before the concept, which was nationwide, to catch hold and proliferate. In Hawai‘i, the problem was the lack of readily available and accessible freshwater venues.
