Just as in the "old days," I'd like to see gray clouds of bonefish invading the flats of Maunalua Bay. This would be a great bonus for the Hawai'i sportfishing industry. As I walked through the lush surroundings of the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort, I had to chuckle at how much things have changed over the years. When I first arrived in Hawai‘i, these grounds were vacant and quiet. Similarly, so was the sport of kayak fishing. Now, 10 years later, here I was walking through a living tropical postcard, on my way to speak at a free clinic for new kayak anglers. I was “boosting up” my green, medium-heavy Rainshadow from 5Oceans7Seas with a stock 4/0 with triple-spliced (lazy) 80 Berkley Big Game line that needed to be completely re-spooled. I was told by my friends and other divers that I should submit this unbelievable story to you guys. As you can see in the picture, I shot a kahala. What the picture does not show is that I shot it with a three-prong from shore. And that’s not even the craziest part. I decided to use a three-prong instead of the usual Riffe because we intended to hunt goats. On the drop before shooting the kahala, I shot a good-sized kumu. I had no stringer or bag to put the kumu (the only stringer was with my dive partner a distance away), so I put it into the top piece of my two-piece Hammerhead wetsuit with the tail still sticking out the bottom of my suit. Six Safe Refueling Tips From BoatUS It was the end of the Memorial Day weekend when a 32’ motorboat with four persons aboard pulled up to the fuel dock. Moments later, after filling up, an explosion ripped through the boat–literally separating it into clamshell-like halves. In an instant, a 25-year-old woman was dead. All of the boat’s remaining occupants as well as a fuel dock attendant were hospitalized. Saddest of all, the accident may have been preventable. A newspaper reported that investigators found that the recently purchased used boat, which was being refueled by its new owner for the first time, may have had a fuel system gasket “give way,” or fail, allowing gasoline fumes to escape and accumulate below decks. Fishermen Petition Seal EIS NOAA is going around the state conducting informational meetings on the "Draft Hawaiian Monk Seal Recovery Actions Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement." Though the jury is still out, one group, the Reel Fishing Club of Honolulu, isn't waiting for the verdict. Their "Petition Opposing Proposed Rule Making to Designate the Main Hawaiian Islands as Critical Habitat for Hawaiian Monk Seal" is going viral on the web. Bite Still Strong Kona had a consistently great month for blue marlin bites. Throughout the month of August, we weighed about 10 marlin well over 500 lbs each. Smaller marlin were also in the area, keeping the action alive for the fishermen in Kona. The Kona fleet did an amazing job of tagging and releasing many marlin during the month. Marlin of all sizes were tagged and released, Estimated weights ranged from 100 lbs to over 700 lbs. More than 200 marlin were successfully tagged and released during the month. On Saturday, July 30, 2011, the Waianae Boat Fishing Club gathered for their annual Wahine Tournament. The rules state that you must have a wahine on board. They even had a tournament king, Harold McShane! Ten teams checked in, and the weather was calm. The day started off pretty quietly. No calls came in. As with every tournament, the excitement was at the weigh-in! Lloyd and Kari Machida had their two girls, Kylie (age 9) and Kailyn (age 6), along on their boat, the KYLIE KAI. The two girls were as excited as any kids would be on a fishing adventure. The girls anticipated seeing dolphins and birds and even catching some fish. The Third Annual North Shore Fishing Tournament was held on Saturday, July 16, 2011. The boats began lining up in front of Hanalei Pier at about 3:30 a.m. for the 5:30 a.m. shotgun start. One unfortunate captain didn't even make it out of the bay before having boat trouble. Another captain graciously volunteered to tow him back in. The weather was sunny, but there was a stiff offshore breeze blowing. Luckily, there wasn't too much of a swell. One early returning boat rescued two stand-up paddlers who had gotten blown out to sea. The first captain to weigh in fish was Glen Kobayashi. He returned at 1:30 p.m. with three ono. Capt. Hawai'i's fishing community has become familiar with tagging programs initiated over the last decade by various government entities and non-profit organizations. The state of Hawai'i, Division of Aquatic Resources' Papio and Ulua Tagging Project in particular is very recognizable with more than 37,000 fish tagged, a 13-percent recovery rate and more than 3,400 participants. These projects help gather valuable data that would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to gather without the cooperation of fishermen. This data is critical and can be used by managers to improve our fisheries. In addition, the program has allowed many anglers to feel a sense of responsibility and ownership of the resource. Adding to the various ongoing tagging projects in Hawai'i, the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group (PIFG) has recently started an effort to tag…

Since I was a young boy, I've enjoyed fishing for ulua with family and friends. Fishing for ulua has been my passion throughout my life. On July 24, 2011, we planned our trip. My friend Colby Pilor called me to make plans for a one-night ulua trip to Kapoho. We met up with our friends Fredo Desha, Tyrell Cuyo and Tehei. Thank God it was a nice day and the water was perfect for ulua! We loaded our poles and gear, and we were off to some serious ulua fishing. The night started off good. This summer I did as much fishing as possible. I posted videos on YouTube (username MaukaMakai808) featuring me doing a variety of fishing from whipping for papio and diving with my friends, to chasing big game ulua with my Uncle Kellen and our good friend Biron. Lucky Shirt At 6 a.m. I was at OTEC, waiting for it to warm up a bit before I jumped in at my favorite dive spot. I like diving here because the drop-off is less than 100 yards from shore. This is where I come to hunt for “beeg fish.” I had on my lucky shirt in hopes of landing a beeg one. I was having a dry spell and hadn’t shot anything that gave me a good fight in a while. When To Change Lures During a day of trolling for big game, how often should you change your fishing lures, when should you change them, and why? Wouldn't it be just great if there were a simple formula? Maybe there is, if you can go by some interesting recent catches. These all happened during a hot run of Kona fishing during late August. Capt. Chip Van Mols and crew J. D. Hudson hosted Hook and Adriane Harmeling aboard Chip's boat, the MONKEY BIZ II, for two days in a row. Summer is over, but the fishing seasons are running a little behind schedule. The ‘oama have shown up, and the papio are getting fat on them. Large aku, or otaru, are being caught up and down the coast from 19 to 43 miles out. They are a sight to behold. It’s been a long time since these fat “footballs” have been seen–much less caught–on this side of the island. The aku boat NISEI was just busting the pile as it did in the old days. On August 13, 2011, 62 anglers from O‘ahu showed up in Hale‘iwa for the Third Annual Paddlers Papio Open (PPO). This papio fishing tournament is open to any type of human-powered watercraft, such as kayaks, surfboards, canoes and SUPs (stand up paddleboards). The PPO is also the third leg of the coveted Oahu Black Diamond Kayak Fishing Series and has big implications for serious kayak anglers. PPO anglers arrived at the Mahu O Ke Kai Canoe Club as early as 4:30 a.m. to sign in before heading out to their favorite fishing holes. My god-brother Micah, my friend Josh and I planned to fish on July 19, 2011. It was five days after the full moon, so I was stoked because it was prime time. On January 29, 2011, I was nearly run over and killed by a boater traveling at a high rate of speed very close to shore. This recent event and many other “close calls” where I was almost run over by boats served as the inspiration for this article. However, my story is not original. There are those who have met their fate in this very manner, and all divers I talked with shared similar stories. Researchers from NOAA have discovered a potent and highly debilitating toxin in the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, a first-of-its-kind chemical finding that is now prompting investigations of other marine mammals in the state. The toxin, ciguatoxin, is produced by marine algae common on coral reefs and accumulates in fish species that are consumed by humans. Ciguatera, the human disease caused by ciguatoxin, affects thousands of people every year worldwide and comes in the form of acute gastrointestinal and neurological illness with symptoms resembling chronic fatigue syndrome. The study reveals that Hawaiian monk seals, whose population is estimated at 1,100 to 1,200, are exposed to significant levels of these ciguatoxins. The threat could pose management challenges for this species that has been dwindling at 4 percent annually due to poor foraging…

40th Annual Lanai Rendezvous Sometimes you get lucky and catch a big fish during a tournament when it really counts. That’s just what happened to Joey Luuwai. Joey, 24, was on the PUALELE, his family’s 33’ Bertram, and was entered in the 40th Annual Lanai Rendezvous. They had been fishing in Hana since Friday morning and had already caught three ono, six mahimahi, one shibi and 20 aku.
