On June 9 to 12, 2011, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo hosted their seventh annual Ulua Challenge. It’s hard to believe that this tournament has already been around for seven years. Over the years, this tournament has grown in size and popularity, and today it is the largest ulua fishing tournament in the state. An astounding 535 entrants participated in this annual event! Of the 535 entrants, 23 were from neighbor islands, one was from the mainland, and 11 were female. It was so good to see the ladies entering the tournament. Field Testing at the FADs Despite the love for whipping for giant trevally, most Moloka‘i fishermen have a craving for fresh aku, ‘ahi, mahimahi and ono. On June 15, 2011, Bojo Morris, craftsman for Ulua’z, and Duna Simeona went trolling for some big blue game and stumbled across a bird pile. As the birds were feeding, Bojo and Duna noticed no strikes on their trolling gear as they made their rounds. Taking a chance and breaking down to smaller equipment, they decided to field test one of the lures used to whip for ulua (GTs), Ulua’z famous Emperor. Following a few jerks, there was an explosion. Aloha, all! I’d like to announce the winners of this year’s Kauai Spearfishing Challenge 2011, held Saturday, June 25, and staged at Lydgate Beach Park. This was an invasive species event targeting roi, to‘au and ta‘ape. The boundaries were originally set for the Kapa‘a area, but due to weather conditions, the boundaries were opened up to include the entire island. A Fish Too Big To Put in the Boat! The waters off Hawai‘i generate some of the world’s greatest large game fishing. Big-game fishing usually involves charterboats. However, there exists a hearty race of fishermen who seek that big one in boats that they personally build. Can you imagine catching a fish too big for your boat? The fish we caught was so big it had to be lashed to the side of the boat. The lashing broke three times on the trip back to the harbor. I just turned 50 years old. I’ve been fishing all my life from shore and for some years with my friend Douglas Peebles on his boat where I learned how to go after pelagics. I’ve read HFN throughout my lifetime, but I never thought I’d land something that would be worthy of submission to your magazine. How Much of Hawaii’s Waters Are Restricted to Fishing Right Now? • Presently 0.4 percent of the main Hawaiian islands marine near-shore waters (< 60 feet deep) are in complete no-take MMAs (i.e., state-managed areas in which no fishing of any kind is permitted). • Another 2.7 percent are in federal/security areas on 0 ‘ahu (Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Reef Runway) and Kauai (Barking Sands PMRF); the public cannot enter so they are effectively no-take areas. • A total of 5.3 percent are in partial closure MMAs, i.e., state-managed areas that limit some fishing or access. • Prohibitions on types of fishing include the following: 8 percent are closed to aquarium-fish collecting; and 27.5 percent of near-shore waters are closed to lay gillnet fishing (since March 2007). Growing up as a child in Hilo, Hawai‘i, my twin brother and I joined the Cub Scouts. I’m not sure why we joined. Perhaps it was because our friends were involved in scouting, or maybe it was our dad’s idea. Whatever the reason was, I’m very glad I did. There were many things we learned in scouting such as knot-tying, building a fire with wet leaves, and how to build a Pinewood Derby car. If my memory serves me right, the Boy Scout motto is “Be Prepared.” It’s interesting that many things you learn as a child become a part of your life as an adult. The first time I fished on the HAPPY HOOKER with Kid “Doc” McCoy, the boat’s owner, I saw a unique view of marlin identification. We hooked a marlin, and as it got close Doc yelled out, “Look, it’s a black.” Black marlin are extremely unusual catches for Kona, so I was quite excited. The entire fleet may see only one or two a month so this was going to be special. When I saw it jump, I was puzzled and asked Doc how he knew it was a black. Everyone aboard-all the regulars-laughed as though they knew what was coming. Doc pointed to the great plume of dark smoke blowing up from the dirty exhaust of his grumbling old diesels and said, “All our catches are black.” Doc, a veterinarian,…

The Fisheries Science Improvement Act (H.R. 2304), introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) on June 23, 2011, with the support of a bi-partisan group of 18 other members of Congress, seeks to ensure that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) is required to set catch limits based on data, not on guesstimates. This legislation will guide federal fisheries management toward a more science-based approach and prevent NOAA Fisheries from setting arbitrary and overly restrictive catch levels on numerous important recreational fisheries. H.R. 2304 provides a timely path for NOAA Fisheries to manage all of America’s marine fish stocks based on sound scientific data. Hawaii’s Top Billfishers The Billfish Foundation (TBF) has anglers in 70 countries billfishing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Peter Chaibongsai, TBF’s Director of Science and Policy, said, “Annually we receive a combined total of 13,500 to 15,000 TBF ‘tagging data reports’ and ‘release notification cards.’” Top Hawai‘i billfish tag-and-release anglers in the 2010 Billfish Newsletter, which has the latest data, include Suzanne Gustavson (16), Steve Spina (14), Mike Jacobsen (14), James Karamouzis (12), Charles Helscel (9), Kevin Capps (8) and Rick Chaponot (7). Celebrating 40 Years! On August 19 and 20, 2011, Maalaea Boat and Fishing Club will be celebrating the 40th year of sponsoring the Lanai Rendezvous at Manele Harbor. This fishing tournament is and always has been about fishermen getting together, enjoying an evening of good food and hoping to weigh in a prize-winning fish. The “Rendezvous Weekend,” as it has become known, started in 1971 when the idea to have a fishing contest on Lana‘i began. Twenty-two boats entered that year, and Dick Warren of Maalaea Boat and Fishing Club, along with Charlie Cook, Don Lindsey, Tommy Rietow and Johnson Ito all had a role in planning and staging the event on Lana‘i. The 2011 Diving With Dad Tournament was held on Sunday, June 19, at the Kokololio Beach Park in Ha’aula, O‘ahu. This annual Father’s Day event was founded back in 1997 by Brian Yoshikawa, and today this event is organized and coordinated by the Alii Holo Kai Dive Club and Maui Sporting Goods. Brian’s original vision of this child-oriented tournament is focused on giving families the opportunity to come together with friends and other families and spend a wholesome, fun and relaxing Father’s Day at the beach while teaching our youth to enjoy and respect our beautiful ocean and beaches. Every year, a lot of effort by many folks goes into making the annual Yak Off family kayak fishing tournament a success. This year was no different. The community pulls together to put on this event. Donations and help come from all directions, so many thanks are due. A big mahalo goes out to all the competitors for showing up, supporting the event and toughing it out on a rough day. Fourth of July Fishing Ho‘olaulea Every July, Hilo Trollers schedules their July monthly tournament a week late to accommo-date the annual Fourth of July Fishing Ho‘olaulea, which means that you will have to wait till next month to read the Trollers monthly tournament results. Howard Hose, who is now retired, started the Fourth of July Ho’olaulea tournament in 1991. This is a well-run tournament that brings in some larger boats and has bigger entry fees, all of which are redistributed by the volunteer organizers. For the last two years, Eric Baptiste of the EASY MONEY and his wife, Nonohe, have run the tournament.
