Summer temperatures in Florida average in the 90s, so when we found a great last-minute deal to Ireland, we jumped the direct flight to Dublin where the daytime temps were in the 50s. Our plan was to spend a week exploring Dublin and Killarney where I hoped we could get some insight on Irish fishing. We didn’t bring any of our gear because we had heard that most of the streams were off-limits and the ocean temperatures were downright chilly! I assumed that because we were on an island, seafood would be a diet staple. In big-city Dublin, we enjoyed fresh salmon, haddock and cod. After many setbacks, including the closing of the Anuenue Trout Hatchery on Sand Island, which would have meant a slow death for the trout fishery, the new administration under Gov. Neil Abercrombie, assisted by the new DLNR Director William Aila Jr., has come to our rescue! About 50 people gathered in a meeting room at the Ala Moana Hotel in late March to hear from a panel of California visitors about how they bridged their differences to develop “underwater parks”-also known as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)-along their 1,100 miles of coastline. Although the seven-year effort was longer, more complicated and more costly than originally anticipated, and not all stakeholders were entirely happy with the outcome, most participants felt it generated largely acceptable compromises. Hosted by the State’s Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), the workshop was intended to bring together local stakeholders to explore the relevance of the California process and planning tools to efforts in Hawai‘i, and to begin discussions about how to best design a process for coastal marine spatial planning (CMSP) in Hawai‘i. The blue marlin finally showed up in Lahaina’s waters. During the month, 14 were weighed and another five were tagged and released. The striped marlin were almost nonexistent. Only one was caught. The shortbill spearfish catches were consistent throughout the month: 22 were weighed, and another four were tagged and released. This brought the monthly billfish total to 46. In addition, six ‘ahi over 100 lbs were weighed. Battling in Reverse The EXACT landed a 450-lb blue marlin angled by Charles Spencer. He was fishing with Capt. Sal Tarantino and Capt. Hunter Betts. Hilo Trollers June Tournament The Hilo Trollers completed their third successful fishing tournament of the season on Sunday, June 5. Fourteen boaters entered, and seven caught qualifying flag fish. One marlin and nine ono were weighed. The only marlin and largest fish overall was a 175.3-lb fish landed on the HELE MAI by Capt. Reid Takayama, angler Dayton Sumiki and crew and Commodore Debbie Takayama. The largest ono and second largest fish overall was a 46.5-lb ono landed on the ANDREA W by Capt. Rodney Nishiki and angler Clive Tanimoto. The award for the first fish landed was donated by S. Tokunaga Store and went to the CLAUDIA L and Capt. Frank Lawrence. Shorecasting for ulua is an exciting sport. Being able to cast your line out into the strike zone is a skill that needs to be mastered by true shoreline anglers. Skillful casting is a major part of this physically challenging sport. Catching an ulua from shore is a great experience. Shorecasting can yield some other game fish, too. Uku, sharks, amberjacks (kahala) and stingrays are some of the probable big-game predators a shorecaster could expect to catch. And sometimes a surprising species comes along and makes an angler’s day. Sometimes it is the catch of a lifetime. My friends Mike Jung and Brent Kamiya love to fish. The Third Annual Hanapa‘a Shootout Tournament was held on May 7, 2011, at the Ke‘ehi Boat Harbor. It is a nonprofit tournament put on by Hanapa‘a Fishing Company with a 100-percent cash back return to the fishermen. This year, with a total of 47 entries, the jackpot was worth $14,100. There were also cash prizes for side jackpots: marlin (first—$ 1,380, second-$920); ‘ahi (first—$ 1,410, second-$940); mahi-mahi (first—$ 1,410, second-$940); and ono (first—$1,410, second-$940). Besides cash prizes, there were prizes ranging from gold reels to brine bags and gift certificates. These prizes were given out every half-hour by the luck of the draw. Silver Carp Fly Into Boats Here’s is a great reason why they call it catching instead of fishing. This is a story of silver carp fishing on the Wabash River in Indiana, where fish literally jump into the boat. Silver carp were imported from Asia in the 1970s to control algae in wastewater treatment facilities. They soon escaped. Filter feeders of plankton, silver carp reach extremely high population densities and are considered highly invasive. By 2003, silver carp had spread into the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri rivers. They are ready to invade the Great Lakes via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. They are called "flying carp” because they leap when startled. They can grow to over 40 lbs and can leap 10 feet in the air. They are…

Monday-June 6, 2011 It was that time of year again, time for the S. Tokunaga Ulua Challenge here on the Big Island of Hawai'i. More than 500 entered from Honolulu, Maui and the mainland. This year there were women and teenagers entered in the tournament, which was great for all ages and genders. The packing and planning took a toll. I spent five nights on the shoreline just to get a good spot and set up camp properly before the contest started on Thursday, June 9. It ran until Sunday the 12th. I had to start early because of the amount of anglers and the lack of good fishing spots. Some like cliffs, beaches and bays, but the best spots have deep water right off land’s edge.
