Um, maybe the ever elusive kayak fishing offshore trifecta? The morning that my pole started screaming, informing me that a big fish had just eaten my Rocket-rigged dead ‘opelu, the last thing I was thinking about was catching other fish. For the next 15 seconds I struggled to get my pole out of my rod holder. The fish’s power combined with the tight drag on my reel and the angle at which the rod was lodged in the pole holder made the pole unbelievably difficult to get out. ■ Island fishermen of old bound together a cowry shell, a stone, a stick and a sliver of bone, added some hau fibers and made magic. You'd swear their odd creation was a talisman for warding off demons or a charm for conjuring good fortune-perhaps even a ceremonial stick to shake during a ritual dance. But the only "demons" it shakes up are the devilish octopi it beguiles as this leho makau luhe'e (cowry shell octopus lure) slowly dances along the bottom of the sea. In Big Island tradition, a supernatural cowry was once the prized possession of Ha'aluea, an ocean goddess who assumed the form of an octopus. ■ My quest to find the best fishing spots continued. Since the rains, I have had a difficult time finding a good spot. All of my proven spots had big waves and debris from the run-off of rainwater. On the west side of O‘ahu, I managed to catch what I thought was a needlefish, but it turned out to be a medical syringe (just kidding). I want to thank all of the people who E-mailed me about my last article. It was nice to hear from you and find that many are hunting for fish around O‘ahu’s shores. I want to comment on the boat ramp at Kawaihae. This refers to [an article in] the March issue of HFN, entitled "Kohala Coast Boating Blues." Up to a year ago, for over nine years, I served as the director of the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Among other things, my department was responsible for constructing all of the launch ramps on public property in the state. My department was regarded as one of the leaders in marine facilities construction in the nation. The department published a handbook on marine facilities construction. Many states, including Hawai‘i, have considered that handbook as setting the standards for such construction. ■ The Second Annual Kapa‘a Pop Warner Shoreline Fishing Tournament was held March 18 through March 20, 2011. Start fishing began at 8 a.m. on Friday, and the weigh-in was held at Kapa‘a Ball Park Pavilion on Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. I can tell you first-hand that the weather was some of the worst I have experienced during a tournament. The winds were trades blowing 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. If this had been any other sporting event, it definitely would have been cancelled. The event was a true testament to what hardy souls we fishermen are. During Friday night’s strongest gusts, my two-man tent conformed to my extra-large body. ■ As the sun peeked over O‘ahu’s eastern horizon, Terrence Takahata and his crew (Lance Ohara, Terry Yonashiro and Ava) began to unload their trucks and set up their picnic area at Kaiona Beach Park in Waimanalo. It was Sunday, February 27, and this was the day of the Ali‘i Holo Kai Dive Club’s Three-Prong Meet. The scene was bustling as the divers arrived and began to unload and check all of their diving gear. Friendly greetings were exchanged among the 21 divers. Everyone was excited due to the perfect weather and ocean conditions. Ryan Pearson 1st Place Omilu G.T. Masters Hey Chuck, I took Friday off work to get a good spot for the GT Masters Tournament. Pot Roast (a.k.a. Calvin) and I Ioaded up on Friday morning and headed out. When we got to our spot, everything looked good so we set up camp and rigged the poles. We had bait in the water, and it was all good. At about 4 p.m. my pole ripped. I ran over and grabbed it. The fight was on! The fish ran right across all of our lines. Pot Roast and Jr. worked the poles to get them out of the way. Wave Kills Albatross ■ Thousands of Midway Atoll sea birds were killed by the Japan tsunami. According to Barry W. Stieglitz of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands National Wildlife Refuges, at least 1,000 albatross were killed along with thousands of chicks. Five-foot high waves hit the three islands inside the atoll. On Spit Island, 15 acres were submerged. Eastern Island was 60 percent covered. Sand Island was 20 percent underwater. About 1 million albatross live at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, located 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu. The refuge is home to the largest Laysan albatross colony in the world. Barry said the deaths could account for a significant share of Laysan albatross chicks hatched during the current season. Aloha Chuck, I wanted to share a story about our ulua action here on the Big Island. Early Monday morning, March 28, 2011, my partner Nate Kekoa called me up and said, “Ho. Dark night. We go holos.” I said, “I no more any lead. Gotta make.” So he decided to drive up and mold some lead with me. We got all the wire ready to make 10 10-oz leads, enough for the overnighter. Aloha HAWAII FISHING NEWS Fans! Want to share a unique photograph of James Ross Jeter, an enthusiastic sportsman who loves to fish! This photograph was taken after James paddled in to shore and walked the length of the beach to where we were waiting. As he approached, all that he was carrying seemed comfortable and easy to manage, after all, he is a natural when it comes to handling substantial water sports equipment. This time, however, the largest item he was carrying was a 9-foot 6-inch surfboard! Cleverly attached to this surfboard were his fishing equipment: rod and line, pliers, lures, safety tools, and whatever it takes to make fishing on a surfboard simple, safe and secure. ■ White ulua season is upon us. These next three months will be the best of the year to catch a prized giant trevally, known by Hawai‘i anglers as white ulua. White ulua are the biggest and the toughest of all ulua because of the sheer size they can attain. Though a white ulua weighing over 200 lbs has never been caught by any method, Maui scuba spear diver Al Gadow speared a white ulua that weighed 191 lbs back in 1980 at one of his favorite spots. He and his boatman Bobby Smith showed Hawai‘i the largest white ulua ever captured. Have you ever gotten a strike that spooled you so fast that you could barely remember what happened? At the age of 16, Kaimi Moniz Costa has skill that seems to come easily. He credits all who taught him, including his Uncle Walter Okuma, Anthony Florendo and his cousin Bryan Keo.
