The Biggest Blue Marlin Ever Caught on Rod & Reel June 10, 197 0. The COREEN£ C, moored at Kewalo Basin, took aboard the day’s charter. Three Huntington Beach, California, car salesmen had won a Hawaiian vacation as part of a sales-incentive bonus. Capt. Cornelius Choy’s daughter Gail, also a 100-ton captain and first mate, greeted them aboard. Gail saw three things wrong with the picture. These salesmen obviously had been Waikiki partying. They'd brought their wives along, and trade winds were blowing hard. Even the leeward side was upside-down, and these malihini weren’t ready to fish or cut bait. Capt. October Feast On October 2, 2010, at approximately 3:30 p.m., "Boomski’s" himself, Bruddah Ola Kino, a Moloka‘i cowboy, paddler, "surfa-rippa," and, of course, "Captain Thirsty," landed his first-ever 38-lb ulua while whipping on his home island of Moloka‘i. Every so often when this busy, hard-working cowboy, paddler and now grandpa of two gets some free time, the quest to catch his first big ulua is always on the agenda. Although he took to the ocean to throw net for fish that day, he found time to throw a few "blasts" (whips) just in case his big ulua was around. Dear Chuck, I wanted to send you some pictures of our second trip to Alaska. Last year was definitely an experience-spending a week in an RV with five people and learning how to catch wild sockeyes-but this year we were much better prepared. We got the girls waders this time so they wouldn’t have to worry so much about the water spilling over their hip-boots-and it’s a good thing as the river was much higher this year! The weather didn’t cooperate too much, raining nearly every day. However, the fishing was much, much better! The salmon made a huge run the week we were there, and coupled with our experience from last year, we managed to hanapa‘a and max our daily limits nearly every day! Being ourselves, we continued to…

Aloha Chuck, My son Isaac and I hadn’t done a serious fishing run in several months, so we decided to head out for a couple of hours to try for the elusive awa. Getting to the grounds, I anchored my outrigger canoe and immediately tossed out a pre-rigged line with secret awa bait. Awa, being herbivores, can be quite finicky. It didn’t take long to get the first hit, but the rubber hooks I had just would not connect. We had several hits during the next two hours (probably over a dozen), but none stuck. During slow times, I told Isaac, "Let’s leave and troll home." Funny thing, though: every time I said that we would get a nice, drag-screaming hit then the fish would spit the hook. I think…

Lead Weight Ban Sunk The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has refused an environmentalist petition to ban lead fishing weights. The fishing victory came two months after the agency refused to ban lead in hunting ammunition. The American Bird Conservancy, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility and the hunting group Project Gutpile argued that ammo and fishing weights kill via lead poison between 10 million and 20 million birds a year. The petition cited nearly 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles outlining the toxic effects of lead on wildlife. According to the petitioners, the studies, "conclude that the lead components of bullets, shotgun pellets, fishing weights and lures pose an unreasonable risk of injury to human and wildlife health and the environment." The 2010 Hilo Trollers Awards Annual Ceremony The Hilo Trollers annual banquet and awards ceremony was held on Saturday, October 2 at the University of Hawaii, Hilo cafeteria. To qualify for annual awards, a boater must have competed in at least two monthly tournaments other than the Labor Day Invitational Tournament. The Trailers completed their 2010 season with this award’s ceremony, and all the captains, anglers and their families had a good time. Captains from current and past years were recognized for their skill and angling successes. Volunteers on radio control, the weigh-in crew and the board were also recognized. Weather in Hawai‘i waters will play a more important role in any marine activity during winter. Mariners are advised that the change from good to bad weather can be fast. The severe weather events than can occur, in decreasing order of frequency, are: gusty trade winds, high northwest swell and surf, cold front with Kana winds, and Kana low. The strongest trade winds are the winter-type trades that can occur in December. The number of trade wind days will be low-only about half of the days of the month-but gusty trades can occur. High northwest swell and surf will be frequent along the exposed northern shores. I was on a normal Saturday morning dive session on October 30 with a good friend of mine, Joey Kekumu. We spent about three hours out in front of Kahana, Maui. Joey and I grabbed one lobster each, and I had them strung on a float 50 feet behind me. Bozeman, in southwest Montana, is right in the middle of some beautiful trout fishing waters. Dr. Steven Wallach and I fished the Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers over five days. Our guide, Toby Swank, owner of Fins & Feathers fly shop, picked us up at the hotel each morning then drove us to the river that presented the best fishing. Toby provided the rods, flies and a great lunch. He not only rowed the drift boat, but also tied on all the flies, netted, and even unhooked our fish.
