■ Our adventure began on a Thursday after we chartered a dive/fishing trip with the captain of the MAKANA LANI, our good friend Kenny Fogarty. On Friday, August 13 (Friday the 13th), my friend Justin and I decided to go trolling off Wai'anae because we'd heard there were large aku schools here and there. Justin is a skilled, long-time skin diver. He recently purchased a boat of his own to get in on the trolling action. He wanted some assistance on setting up his boat and rigs, so I invited him to fish with me. ■ The USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) Honolulu Field Station (HFS) is investigating a die-off of striped puffer fish (Arothron hispidus) occurring on the islands of Hawai‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i and O'ahu. Mortality has been ongoing since February on the island of Hawai‘i; March on the island of Maui; and April on the island of O'ahu. Affected puffer fish are appearing on the water surface and on shorelines. Fish on the water surface are puffed up, are unable to right themselves, and soon die. Longtime residents report that this is unusual. The HFS became involved in mid-June after being contacted by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Striped puffer fish are the main species affected (>90%), although rare instances of affected spotted puffer fish (A me/eagris) and porcupine puffer…

■ The 14th Annual Ohana Fishing Tournament was held on August 20, 21 and 22, 2010, Admissions Day weekend. There were six different divisions: Men’s; Women’s; Kupuna; Teen; Children’s; and ‘Ohana (family). Participating in this year’s tournament was the Hawaii Islands Fisheries Group, which provided prizes for three places in their tag and-release papio program. The DNLR Fisheries Education answered many questions and handed out fishing education information to the public. There were many different species of fish weighed in at the Thelma Parker Gym in Waimea. Congratulations to all the participants and winners who made this tournament successful. ■ The good summer fishing continued. A few more ‘ahi were caught along with mahimahi and marlin. Weather conditions remained fairly good with trade winds and mostly mild seas. This summer marked the return of Bad Dad’s Fishing Tournament, which is organized by Randy Marks. Randy is assisted by his wife, Joann, and many family members and friends who put on a really great, good-fun tournament. This year’s event saw about 30 teams entered and produced a variety of fish even a mermaid for the amusement of the many spectators who came to watch the weigh-in. ■ The First Annual Grace Bible Church Team Mongolia Fishing Tournament helped raise support for a short-term mission team. The team consisted of four females and three males who committed three weeks of their lives to minister to the people of Mongolia. The Team Mongolia Fishing Tournament was a huge success! Seventy-eight fishers entered, and there was a good turnout at the weigh-in. A lot of people won prizes. As tournament organizers, we were a little concerned. Just two weeks before the event, only two people had entered and only a few donations had been solicited from fishing stores. We began to think this might not have been a good idea. ■ Aloha. My name is Chris Corbat. I'm known locally as "Kayak Chris." I work on Maui at the Grand Wailea Resort with Maui Ocean Activities. After a kayak tour, I was putting away my gear when I heard a commotion among the tourists at the beach. I looked over and saw a spearfish chasing bait fish 20 feet offshore. Then, the spearfish swam straight up on the beach. The wave went out, leaving the bright blue spearfish trying to wiggle its way back to the water. I jumped on it and wrestled it up on shore. The tourists went wild, taking pictures and yelling at me to let it go. I told them, "Do you know how hard it is to catch a fish like this?" I got the…

■ Early in the morning on August 7, excited kayak anglers flooded the Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Clubin Hale‘iwa for the second running of the Paddlers Papio Open (PPO). The format allowed fishers to use any type of human-powered watercraft for a chance at the $2,150 cash prize purse. Crafts included stand up paddle boards (SUPs), surfboards and canoes. The goal for the anglers was to catch the biggest papio under 10 lbs and over 13 inches. A great group o volunteers worked hard to make the event successful. They got to Hale‘iwa early and helped check in anglers and inspect kayaks, coolers and vehicles. Fifty-seven kayak anglers took to the waters around the North Shore from Sunset Beach to Mokule‘ia Beach Park. At check-in time, competitors were given…

■ A community volunteer effort taking place over the summer to beautify Sand Island State Recreation Area culminated in a group project on August 28 in which 230 volunteers turned out to help paint concrete pilings, a children’s train structure, charcoal bins and other tasks in six areas of the popular coastal park. To date, volunteers from Sand Island businesses have also repaired broken picnic tables and benches, pavilions and rock walls and much more. "DLNR appreciates the involvement by Senator Suzanne Chun-Oakland to organize community kokua to keep this popular park in top shape," said Dan Quinn, State Parks administrator. Fish, Poi or Sugar Water? ■ Maui was the recent site of a classic Hawai‘i turf battle over fish, taro and water rights. In the tussle between the little guy and big sugar, Dan Polhemus, a Division of Aquatics Resources head with a reputation of being fair to fishermen, got axed. The Lyn Scott 'ohana of Haiku, Maui, have fished in the Honopou Stream for centuries. The stream has provided fish and irrigation for their stone-terraced taro fields. But Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) Company, an Alexander and Baldwin subsidiary and the last sugar plantation in Hawai‘i, wants the water. Leonard Pagan, a fourth-generation sugar grower, and his family have farmed sugar since the early 1800s. They began diverting water for "king cane" back in 1876. Today, the sugar irrigation…

Hawaii Bottomfish Survey 2010 ■ Aloha, Hawai‘i bottomfish fishermen. We are writing to thank you for participating in the recent Hawaii Bottom fish Survey. A total 1,012 surveys were mailed from April through July, and as of September we have received 519 completed surveys-a response rate of approximately 51 percent. All commercial marine license holders who reported the catch of any bottom fish management unit species (BMUS) since November 2008 received a survey. Additionally, all non-commercial bottom fish permit holders also received a survey. Response from commercial marine license holders has been greater (52 percent) than for non-commercial permit fishermen (44 percent). Additionally, response from active Deep Seven fishermen (61percent) has been greater than for fishermen who do not catch Deep Seven species (47 percent). The graph shows the number…

WBFC Monthly Tournament On August 7, the Waianae Boat Fishing Club held their monthly tournament. The fish of the day was aku. On the LEILANI S, Clarence and Lani Sylva, Clarence Sylva Sr., Sugi and Elena Luke headed 33 miles toward Kaua‘i at a 92-degree heading. They circled a few times around a bird pile, just waiting for a big fish to hit. Up came a barracuda. The LEILANI S started heading back and took a corner hit. 39 Years of Tradition ■ "Rendezvous" has always seemed to me a strange title for a fishing tournament. It’s difficult to understand unless you've been fortunate enough to have experienced this little event held once a year at Manele Harbor, Lana‘i. Since 1971, when the tradition to have a get-together on the island of Lana‘i began, this gathering of fishermen has remained pretty much the same. Of course, the boats and crews have changed and Manele Harbor has undergone major improvements, but the camaraderie that is legendary has prevailed. Aloha Chuck, My wife and I have been fishing together for 31 years. During this time we have been very fortunate to have many "nice" catches. Like all fishermen, we can remember the size, taste, and fat content of past catches like it was yesterday. Our memories are like almanacs, a we can spin tales of the moon phase, tide, and sea conditions. On Saturday June 12, 2010, we were extremely lucky to add to our "We’ll never forget" memory bank. While trolling the 40-fathom ledge at Ka'ena Point, the port outrigger came screaming down and within seconds the 130 was down to half a spool. Moloka‘i Surface Plug Action ■ On August 10, 2010, Ricky Boy Morris landed a giant ‘omilu. During his visit home to Moloka‘i to attend his cousin’s graduation lu ‘au, Ricky Boy and his younger brother Reagon took to the ocean at his favorite fishing grounds on the south shore of his home to help gather pupu for the party. Deciding to whip for some papio to start the day, Ricky received an explosive hit on his fourth cast. "Yah, yah! Hit!" yelled "Da Anaconda." Typical Ricky Boy, visiting from O'ahu where he now resides, came home to Mokoka‘i with no gear so he had to borrow from hisuncle. Of course, he had to borrow uncle’s product, Ulua'z-specifically, the Anaconda. Within 10 minutes, the huge ‘omilu weighing 21 lbs was on…

■ On day five we woke tired but excited to fish our last day in Mexico. We got up early, but the morning windskept us at bay. We followed the usual morning routine: throwing lures from the boat while drinking a cup of coffee. We were anxious to get back to Isla Bellena where the yellowtail and mahi mahi had been running, so the captain slow-trolled the boat in the wind. We ran live sardina along the way, and once again we were overwhelmed with aku action. The first poles we set out took a triple aku strike that were all reeled in and released. The next set of baits we put out resulted in a double-aku strike. Again, both were caught and released. We rigged up one more time…

■ 1. How much leader is enough? Chances are, the less leader you use, the more sharp-eyed fish you will catch and the more sharp-edged fish you will lose. But where is the happy compromise? Capt. Jay Lighty and a possible grander may provide a clue. Jay had Karmin McKay and Ralph Helfer, visitors from Canada, along on his charter boat, the MARIAH. Jay likes to use live bait when he can, and a pair of aku gave him two options. One bait was small, about a pound or two, and just right for an ‘ahi. He rigged that one on a 200-lb test nylon leader so it would be less visible to a sharp-eyed tuna. Then he set it out long in case the ‘ahi were also being wary.…

■ Fishing is one of the many sports firefighters participate in for fun and relaxation. On August 18 at 5 a.m., the 20th Annual Firefighter Fishing Tournament began on the island of Hawai‘i. The day was sunny with a soothing breeze and typical calm Kona waters. One boat left Hilo Bay, and others left from Honokohau Harbor and Keauhou Bay. Most headed south, with a few venturing as far as TT-buoy. Some ventured north to "the Grounds" outside of the Keahole Airport. Heading south from the harbor, buoys W, C, UU, Band finally TT were checked, but few fish were caught. The largest ono was caught at TT-buoy along with three other ono. About 5 miles out from Ke'ei, a porpoise school produced five ‘ahi. These fish ranged from 92…

Hilo Trollers August Tournament Results ■ The Hilo Trailers held a safe and successful offshore fishing tournament on Sunday, August 1. The tournament was combined with the Dodd Balock Memorial Tournament and ran concurrently with the Hawaii Island Contractors Association, Bank of Hawaii, Honsador Lumber LLC 11th Annual Scholarship Trolling Tournament. Some boats fished in all three tournaments. Thirteen boats entered the Hilo Trailers Tournament, and a number of those boats also qualified for the Dodd Balock Tournament. Eight boats caught flag fish. Two ‘ahi, four ono and seven mahimahi were weighed. The largest ‘ahi and largest fish in the Hilo Trailer’s tournament was a 192.8-lb fish landed by Capt.
