Hi, My name is Chris Alvarez. This is my story of my 111. 2-lb ulua. My friend Calvin Furtado and I went fishing out of the blue for one night on the Kawaihae side. We made the two-hour journey from Puna and got there at about 5 p.m. We cast our poles and sat back to enjoy the sunset and some dinner. I slid some puhi paka down my Shimano Tallus pole and started to chill for the night. Around 1 a.m., we got our first strike on my pole! ■ Twenty-eight lucky fishermen got to camp at Ka'upulehu on the island of Hawai'i and step into the future while learning traditional lawai 'a skills. Besides having a holoholo time, the fishermen learned to shout hana pa'a for community empowered ocean conservation. The Lawai'a 'Ohana Camp, a sustainable fishing camp, is billed as a fishing trip for the entire family. Embracing the values of cultural history, it is held at the ancient fishing and salt-making site Kalaemano, located just north of Kona Village Resort in the ahupua'a of Ka'upulehu. ■ We excitedly departed Honolulu on June 9, 2010, for a two-day fishing trip to Lana'i. We had gotten off to a troublesome start, so we reached our destination five hours later than expected. On the bright side, we were going fishing on Lana\ so a little glitch wasn't so bad. Chad Haraguchi, my 15-year-old son, Gage, and I were going to rough it for two nights in hopes of catching an elusive ulua. Tournaments, It’s Da Season! ■ Marlin hunting improved. Of the 121 total marlin reported to The Charter Desk, 7 4 were tagged and released and nine were over 500 lbs. The striped marlin and spearfish have been a little shy this year, but three striped marlin and 24 spearfish were reported to The Charter Desk during the month. The 'ahi numbers dropped from the previous month, but the yellowfin are still hanging around. Forty-five were reported to The Charter Desk, and among those were a few "gorillas." ('Ahi over 200 lbs are called gorillas.) July was a busy tournament month. Kona hosted six tournaments with more than $500,000 to be won. ■ On July 10 and 11, 2010, Moloka'i anglers gathered foran ulua tournament using spinning tackle and surface lures. Even though there was a small turnout, everyone who participated agreed that the tournament was a success. Earlier this year, there was an attempt to organize a tag-and-release tournament series that would run throughout the season, but the concept received mixed reviews and did not get off the ground. It was too much, too soon. We guys on Moloka'i are ma'a (accustomed) to eating what we catch. We fish to feed our families, and the action that comes with it is a bonus. Nu'uanu Catfish Session Gone Forever? ■ No matter who you talk to, it seems that there will never be another catfish session at the Nu'uanu Reservoir. We have quietly inquired several times over the past months, and the answer has always been the same. The Nu'uanu Reservoir is closed for public access for good. Period. We are not quite sure about this. Perhaps we must look into the future a little bit. The reservoir has not been repaired yet, and the actual repair schedule may be awaiting a new mayor. There is always a glimmer of hope. The reservoir cannot be breached and left alone to the ravages of time. Hi Chuck, I just finished the August magazine and read of Leonard Torricer' sconcern over the state of Hawai'i Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) changing and creating new rules and regulations for33 near-shore and reef fish for the island of Hawai'i. A public meeting was held here on O'ahu at Robert Louis Stevenson Intermediate School this past July. The DAR’s mission that evening was to present a similar proposal and discuss possible changes or create new regulations for three species (goat fish, jack and parrot fish) for O'ahu only! Moi Hole Shootout ■ Harry Wishard, talented fineart painter and fisherman, is owner of Wishard Gallery in the Parker Center in Kamuela. In June, "Splash!" wrote a piece about a Kohala spearfishing, rock throwing and gunfire. The police report stated that shots were fired from the Wishard boat. Dear Chuck, As we start a new school year, I can't help but look back at the 2009-2010 school year to see how fortunate I have been to work with all the students at Koko Head Elementary. Last year, we were privileged to have The Environmental Science program at our school. The main goal of our program was to meet all Environmental Science benchmarks while doing hands-on activities. Besides the classroom units and field trips, we also had guest speakers who would come to our school and share their knowledge with the students. Twenty-one teams joined in the action, launching from He'eia Pier in Kane'ohe Bay at 7 a.m. The fun fishing tournament netted more than $25,000 for Hawai'i’s largest and only island wide meal provider for seniors. Lanakila Pacific’s Meals on Wheels program serves hundreds of homebound kupuna each week.
