Nu 'uanu Catfish ■ We have received no news whatsoever on the current status of the repair project and the disposition of the catfish remaining in the Nu'uanu Reservoir. But we are guilty of having a beer once in a while, and someone at the watering hole offered that the reservoir was being poached by indigents. As it was told, they used bags of dog food to lure the fish and then used throw nets to capture whatever they could without restraint. We do not think so. We visited the outside fence of the reservoir and were very impressed by the way the ingress had been totally curbed by repairing the fence down to the smallest detail. Mayday, Mayday, Ethanol Up 50 Percent ■ The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will consider allowing a SO-percent increase in fuel’s ethanol. If you thought you had problems with ethanol before, they're about to get bigger. The EPA wants the current ElO, 10 percent fuel mix to increase to E15, or fuel containing 15percent ethanol. Spokesperson Margaret Podlich of Boat Owners Association of The United States (Boat U.S.), the nation’s largest boat owners group, said, "To add 50 percent more ethanol to every gallon of gas without first knowing what it will do to the older vehicles and other gasoline engines we currently own is simply irresponsible." ■ The results of The Great Marlin Race are finally in! The Great Marlin Race began last year during the 50th Annual Hawaiian International Bill fish Tournament. Each team had an opportunity to purchase a satellite tag that they deployed in a tournament marlin. Once the fish was tagged, the 180-day race began. The team whose marlin traveled the farthest would win a free entry into this year’s Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. I have been following the race since July when it began and eager to see the results. Ten tags were deployed that week; however, only seven were contenders in the race. Genetic Studies on White Ulua/Papio and 'Omilu in the Main Hawaiian Islands ■ As an ulua and/or papio fisherman, from time to time you may come across an ulua or papio that doesn't quite look like anything else you've ever seen before. This was the case for Kirk Murakami of the Waikiki Aquarium, who is also one of the volunteer taggers for the Ulua Tagging Project. Back in June 2001, Kirk reeled in an 18-lb ulua. What kind, you ask? Take a look for yourself. This fish seems to have the head shape of a white ulua, but the body shape of an 'omilu. When it was caught, this fish did not have the normal brilliant blue coloration nor the spots normally found on 'omilu. The fins were dark blue,…

■ On the morning of January 30, 2010, the beautiful shores of Punalu'u were lined with more than 232 keiki with their parents for the second annual 'O Ka'u Kakou Keiki Fishing Tournament. Participants' ages ranged from just old enough to hold a pole to 14 years of age. The members of 'O Ka'u Kakou were introduced to keiki fishing tournaments when aiding a group in Miloli'i three years ago. A year ago, approximately 167 keiki participated in our first event at Punalu'u. Free bamboo fishing poles and baits, along with spare hooks and leaders, were available to all keiki that needed them. ■ The DLNR has drafted and proposed amendments to Hawai'i Administrative Rules (HAR) that, if adopted, can ultimately result in the demise of Deep Seven bottom fish fishing as it is and has been enjoyed for generations by both fishermen and consumers. One proposed amendment, if adopted, will likely result in the requirement for commercial bottom fish fishers to report bottom fish catches by trip. This will create an administrative burden on both fishers and the DLNR. A DLNR official stated that reports by trip would better ensure that the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) is not excessively exceeded. It’s always thrilling when you can learn the how-tos and how-nots from big fish tugging on your own line, but it’s even more useful if you can master them before you need them by learning from the successes of others.
