Dear Chuck, I wanted to share a story of a double-ulua strike in K-bay. The weather report indicated that the winds were supposed to be light and variable, so my dad, Bruce and I planned to go fishing after work. Thirty seconds after passing The Deli at He'eia Kea Pier, we saw a single bird dive into the water. My dad slowed down so we could get a closer look at what was going on. We saw a few bait fish jump then a huge splash in the water. We could see a big fish cruising on top of the water. It looked like a shark, but as we got closer we saw it was a big ulua. We put our lines in the water and made a few passes.…

Great weather and smooth operations made for a record-setting NOAA marine debris removal cruise this year. On September 29, the NOAA ship OSCAR ELTON SETTE returned from a record-setting 30-day marine debris removal cruise to the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands). Trained NOAA divers removed over 40 tons of derelict fishing gear from the reefs and shores of these remote islands and atolls. One month later, in spite of the best efforts of Hurricane Neki, the SETTE brought in another 22 tons. That total equals 124,490 lbs, or the equivalent of 22 Toyota Tacoma 4- by-4 double-cab pickup trucks, each hauling an average-weight American couple and their Great Dane and trailering a 1959 open-bow runabout with a 1958 Johnson 18-hp engine. Bigeye Tuna Coming to Kohala A revolutionary bigeye tuna farm off Kohala on the Big Island has been approved. The DLNR Land Board approved the tuna project with a 4-to-l vote. Hawaii Oceanic Technology initially will build three Oceanspheres, cages that will hold a total of 60,000 fish. The tuna will be harvested at the weight of 100 lbs. The initial 3,000 tons of tuna will expand to 12,000 tons and have a revenue of $120 million. In 2007,224,000 tons of bigeye were caught in the Pacific. The 2008 value of Hawai'i aquaculture sales was a record $34.7 million. Algae was the largest aquaculture crop at $15.7 million. Oceanspheres are revolutionary unanchored cages made of aluminum and plastic, 165 feet in diameter and submerged 65 feet below the surface. The…

Where are the fish? During this seasonal transition, I've heard that if you travel 40 miles the mahimahi are out there, and that’s been feasible because the water conditions haven't been that rough. Still, it’s pretty slim out there, just like our economy. So what do people who like to fish do about it? That’s a good question. On August 28, 29 and 30, the North Shore Pole Bendaz Casting Club (NSPBCC) held their annual Fun Tournament for their members. children and guests. Anglers were recognized for catching the largest ulua, papio, ‘o ‘io and “other game fish.” There was also a category for the largest eel and the papio and ‘o ‘io weighing closest to 4 lbs. In addition, there was a Teen Division (11 to 17 years) and a Children’s Division (4 to 10 years) NSPBCC members went out that weekend to spend some priceless fishing time with family, friends and guests. Chuck, I need some help and I hope you can find someone who can tell me what my brother Paul caught on Halloween day in Pearl Harbor. We tagged and released him but I took some pictures. We feel it’s an ulua (13.2 lbs) but what species is it? Never have I seen one like this before. His lowerjaw is shorter than his upper. I looked very close and his lower jaw seems natural and not broken off. My brother feels its a white ulua with a defect in his lower jaw but I'm not sure. Can you please let me know? It smelled like a vicious fish rumor. Word on the docks was that the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) tossed an explosive bobber into the crowd at its O'ahu public meeting, "Statewide Public Meetings Size Limits and Other Regulations for Marine Species.” Was the DAR really trying to bait a 45-lb size limit on yellowfin and bigeye tuna? My name is J. D. Hudson. I crew part-time on the CAMELOT, typically for Capt. Mark Schubert. On one of our recent trips, we caught a mahimahi that had been bitten by a cookie cutter shark. The bite of the shark had been well-aimed. It was in a perfect location on the belly of the big female. With the shark having taken its bite, the mahimahi’s stomach fell about halfway out. As though that weren’t odd enough, it was an old wound. Now. I don’t claim to be an expert in this area, and 1don’t know how fast wounds heal on fish; but this one was scarred over. The Keehi Boat Club hosted its annual Wahine Tournament on Saturday. October 17. The Wahine Tournament is the sister event of the annual KBC Jackpot, which was held earlier this year on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31. In previous years, the KBC held its Jackpot and Wahine Tournaments together on the same weekend, but the format was changed this year based on the suggestions of many captains. For 2010, the KBC again plans to schedule the two-day Jackpot Tournament in May with the Wahine Tournament following in October. Those fishermen and fisherwomen who joined the Wahine Tournament this year faced conditions that were meant for the most hardy and faithful crews. Nu uanu Catfish Program-Sequel in January 2010? Although the official catfishing program closed down in mid-December, it appears that there may be a possibility for another session to be scheduled for early 2 0 1 0 because there will be plenty of catfish left to harvest. The repair program has not yet been announced to the public, and it may not be announced officially before well into the year. The main problem, as seen from this end, will be manning the program with severely curtailed funds and adding stress to the DLNR personnel already heavily taxed. This month, I offer four useful, money-saving tips for a variety of tackle-making situations. Their one common feature: each involves a creative, inexpensive use of plastics. 1. In the life of a trolling rod, the fore-grip seems to be the first thing to die. When the foam-rubber material gets loose and begins to deteriorate, you are faced with a tough choice. To replace it, you have to remove all of the guides so you can slide a new grip down the blank from the tip end and glue it in place. But then you have to reinstall the guides-rewrapping and recoating. That’s a major job. Or you can just ignore the problem and avoid using the fore-grip as it continues to deteriorate. The impact of this increase will differ for each of the five categories of harbors and is based on "along catwalk-' mooring rates, (bow/stern rates are less, but the percentage of increase is greater). Insurance and the Process of Nonsense In my book, there are only two ways to measure success or failure. First, are you making an honest profit? Second, have you made things better or worse? I really don’t care what the process is. A ridiculous, reactionary process on the back end with zero accountability on the front makes absolutely no sense what soever and is a demonstrated failure.
