■ "Dive flags can sometimes be difficult to see in rough seas. It is very important for vessels operating in our waters to designate a lookout whenever possible," said Chairperson Thielen. "This will help vessels avoid divers in the water, and also whales, dolphins, turtles and other marine life and large floating objects." Divers are required by law to use a dive flag when diving or swimming underwater in navigable waters of the state. ■ It was finally the week of the S. Tokunaga Ulua Challenge. There were more than 500 entrants, and they were all getting ready. Some had saved their spots for weeks. When Monday came, we met in the morning. Our group included me, my 12-year-old son Kainalu and my three good friends Helani Kenui, Robert Kenui and Gordon Ponce. There was a big south swell hitting, so I decided to hit Manuka, the place where I had caught my first ulua. When we arrived, no one was there. It felt good to be back. I presently live in the Marshall islands about 2500 miles southwest of Hawai'i on Kwajalein Atoll. This story takes place April 9, 2009 on the small island of Roi-Namur, about 440 acres in size located at the northeast end of the Kwajalein Atoll. ■ The Second Annual Yak Off was once again a big hit with O'ahu and mainland anglers. Thirty contestants from around the islands including two wahine and four keiki showed up at the Hale'iwa Canoe Club. The conditions this year were again challenging but much better than last year. It is hard for contest organizers to plan a kayak event around the weather. You've got to give a big hand to the athletes that paddled out. As early as 4:45 a.m., the first contestants were signing up at the beach tent, trying to take advantage of launching in the calmest winds of the day. Ahi Fever ■ It finally all came together, a day off, a friend who is also a great fisherman who could also take the day off, a good weather forecast and fish in the water. Aloha Chuck, After a long winter (one year) we caught our first ‘ahi of 2009. The week before was a miserable day-not getting anything, not even a knockdown. We set out at 5 a.m. from the Wai‘anae Small Boat Harbor in hopes of catching some fresh bait to take advantage of some hungry mahimahi. On the boat that day was Don and me and friends from work Gavin, Don, Jay, and Tony. The plan changed when we got word of ‘ahi being caught the day before. We set out lines hoping to put some ‘ahi in the box. R-buoy had some small game and Gavin picked up some for kau kau. ■ The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has implemented rule changes to the fisheries management area (FMA) within Kahului Harbor that is bounded by a line between the seaward edges of the breakwaters. The revisions to the existing HAR Chapter 13-51 now require fishers to check in, check out and file catch reports; prohibit most netting; and set new bag limits. “These rule changes are the result of years of discussions with various harbor user groups and a public hearing held last year in May. They were developed to address concerns of various groups that use the harbor and to help effectively deal with different fishing activities in the harbor,” said Laura H. Catfish Opening at Nu'uanu ■ It was a dark and stormy day-and so it was when the first catfishing session opened at Nu'uanu. The weather was hostile, but the fishing was brisk. The biggest catch of the day was a 9¼-lb channel catfish, a sturdy fish caught by Micah Choy. There were all kinds of other catches that were impressive, and the atmosphere among the anglers was bright. Then, nostalgia set in, and no matter where one went the question was always the same: will there be another catfish session, or is this the last one? Sea-cage aquaculture is now a kind of “gold rush," and I would be very sad if the sea-cage farmers were allowed to do to Hawai'i what they have done to my native coast, British Columbia (Canada) as well as to Norway, Scotland, Western Ireland and Eastern Canada. The main problem with sea-cage farming of finfish is that when practiced on the industrial scale that operators claim to require in order to make a profit, it eventually destroys surrounding wild fish stocks. ■ Last September I made my first trip to Alaska along with two buddies from the Hawai‘i Waikahe‘olu Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU; <http://www.tuhi.org>). Honolulu banker John Bennett and TU member Joe Raymond had been to Alaska a few times and had worked out a great trip with the assistance of two Alaska residents, Mike and Dan McGough.
