When we were sending in our entry fee for the 2009 Ahi Fever tournament, my wife, Colleen, and I were contemplating our crew for the two-day event. Record-Setting Numbers ■ It was time again for the S. Tokunaga Store Ulua Challenge. The 2009 Ulua Challenge was held from June 11 to 14, and this year saw a record 501 entrants, eight of them female and 39 from O’ahu. This was possibly the largest shoreline fishing tournament in the state. USA Today called the Ulua Challenge one of the 10 great places to compete-hook, line and sinker. The weather report called for gusty winds and high surf on the south side. However, anglers braved the elements and ventured to their favorite spots across the Big Island. With 501 entrants, I wondered if there would be any spots left to fish. Stories were heard of fishermen setting up camp days, weeks and even months in advance to lock down…

Yakadoo! ■ The Aquahunters Invitational 2009 Mahi Masters Kayak Tournament was held on May 30 and 31 on the island of O’ahu and was a big success! Two-person teams were after cash prizes for Biggest BullMahi, Biggest Cow Mahi and Total Weight (two mahimahi). Jackpot fish were ono, shibi, kawakawa, kamanu, uku, jack (ulua and kahala) and aha. Mahala to all the contestants! You all helped to make this a great tournament. Really impressive were all the species that were brought up during this two-day tournament. A big shout out to Mike "Mahi" lchiyama and Isaac "Rocket" Brumaghim forimpressive hauls during this tournament. Chuck, I have ESP. I can see into the future and predict things that are going to happen. Why, just the other day as my attention was focused on the fly fisherman in the front of the boat-it all came to me in a flash. Only moments before, in the back of the boat, I had hooked afresh, live bait on the line and cast it out before handing the spinning rod to the angler. (The wives of some fly fishermen do not fly fish.) For some reason, I turned around and saw that she had laid the rod on the deck beside the seat. ■ Recently many of us in my Trout Unlimited club and many other concerned anglers, DLNR staff, scientists, legislators, educators and the many thousands of recreational users of our beloved freshwater fisheries have been up in arms over a very sudden, and apparently biased, move by DLNR Chairperson Laura Thielen to shut down the Sand Island Anuenue Fish Hatchery. As things percolate through the media, the legislators and many other sources, the greedy transparency and ill-considered politics behind this horrible idea become more and more apparent. I am sure that HFN will share all of this information with you readers and help direct your opinions in such a way that we might all make such a lot of noise that it might stop this hatchery closure once and for all.…

■ Gentlemen, start your kayaks! The first annual West Maui Kayak Fishing Tournament was a great success with 23 entries and some nice weather. Starting at 7a.m. at Baby Beach in Lahaina, some kayakers went north and some south. There were a few two-man teams, and the rest went solo. All entry fees were paid back to the winners in two categories: Inshore Fish and Pelagic Fish. Kayakers used various methods of fishing (all by rod and reel) including trolling, drifting and casting. Six fish qualified for the weigh-in at the end of the day. ■ Aloha, Uncle Chuck. Iwould like to tell you how my event went. On Saturday, July 11, I held the first D’artagnan’s Keiki Freshwater Shootout, and it was a blast! It was all possible because Uncle Mike(Mike Oliva!) was nice enough to offer my dad and me the use of his huge reservoir. The reservoir is on his beautiful W.O.H. (Waipio on Horseback) Ranch in the town of Kukuihaele, overlooking the beautiful Waipio Valley where King Kamehameha was raised. The event started at 8 a.m., and I was expecting more than 20 entrees but only 12 kids including me showed up. For me and the rest of the kids that came, it was "game on"! ■ The Nu’uanu Reservoir’s recreational fishing program may be in some serious trouble, but government officials have not notified the public. The reservoir’s parcel No. 4, used for catfish fishing, may be decommissioned in January 2010, according to documents obtained from the Board of Water Supply (BWS). Originating as a liability issue, an August 2008 letter from former BWS manager and chief engineer Clifford Lum to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Chairperson Laura Thielen stated, “There is no current documentation between DLNR and BWS which acknowledges and consents to the present use of the Reservoir for DLNR’s [fishing] program.” The trouble was that although the DLNR requires a fishing permit, the BWS, which has owned the land prior to 1920, was not absolved of liability. ■ In June, Keauhou Bays warmed with akule. The scene was duplicated in many bays, harbors and inlets around the islands. The big-eyed scad came into the shallows during the day to escape from offshore predators, but inshore waters present their own dangers. In the shallows, akule become prey to ‘omilu, kaku, ulua and other ravenous reef bullies. The akule and their aggressive companions don’t always come close enough to the docks and piers where the "cane pole" fishermen wait impatiently. But young Nainoa Murtagh found himself in exactly the right position to catch both the akule and one of the biggest ‘omilu we’ve seen in a while. Nainoa, 10, is the son of Capt. The Coconut Wireless ■ One day I met John Moniz at the NAPA Auto Parts store in Hale’iwa. We got to talking about fishing, and John told me his brothers had caught two ‘Ahi. He said one was easily over 200 lbs. Because these were some of the first ‘Ahi to come into Hale’iwa Harbor, I had to get the story. That evening I drove over to John’s house in Waialua to check it out. As I pulled into the driveway, I parked right in front of the 26' Jackpot the LANIWAI sitting on its trailer.
