▪ The 2008 S. Tokunaga Store Ulua Challenge kicked off on June 5, 2008. With a whopping 449 entrants, this was the biggest ulua fishing tournament on the Big Island and possibly the biggest in the state. Of the 449 entrants, 38 were from the neighbor islands, 10 were female and one was from California. News spread quickly days before the tournament about which spots had already been “locked down” by fishermen eager to claim their stake on prime fishing grounds. Two common questions being asked among entrants were, “Where you guys going?” and “When you guys going?” The Big Island is definitely big in comparison to the neighbor islands, but with word that there were over 400 entrants, fishermen quickly scrambled to find a spot to set up camp…

The proposed revisions fort he papio and ulua will include as a group: omilu, white papio & ulua, menpachi ulua or bigeye trevally, kagami, paopao or yellow ulua, gunkan or black ulua, yellow spot or island jack, and the barred jack. ▪ “Start fishing” began at 5:30 a.m. with 25 boats loaded full of wahine ready to reel in a big one. To keep the mood festive, we had a “Name That Tune” prize contest every 20 minutes featuring songs from the ’70s to current day, ranging from Hawaiian contemporary to disco. “Stop fishing” was at 2 p.m. Once all the boats were secure at the harbors, Tournament Control Gene Nakashima was almost done for the day. Glen and Pauline Yano took care of the scales. It’s a family affair: Gene is Tsuyoki’s son, and Pauline is Tsuyoki’s niece. Tsuyoki’s daughter, Lisa Ciriako, and his niece Ginny Pelekane fished in the tournament and donated handmade earrings and bracelets made from Tsuyoki’s bead collection. Blue Marlin World Cup ▪ The 24th Annual World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup) was held on July 4th. Anglers from the west coast of Africa to Vanuatu in the South Pacific competed in 2008. Some of the best anglers and captains in the world competed in this “one-winner-takes-all” event. The registration fee was $3,000. The winner last year, from Bermuda, took home $343,000 for his 728-lb blue marlin. The marlin was caught on a Black Bart lure, the official lure of the World Cup (<http://www.blackbartlures.com>). The team landing the biggest blue marlin over 500 lb wins the pot each year. There is no second place. The 2008 winner was also offered a fishing trip of a lifetime for up to five guests at Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic.…

Groups Want Seal Shoreline ▪ The Center for Biological Diversity, Ocean Conservancy and Kahea have petitioned Carlos M. Gutierrez, U.S. Commerce Secretary, to make the main Hawaiian islands a critical monk seal habitat. What will that mean for ocean users and fishermen? Seal shores will be off- limits. But will that help monk seals avoid extinction? Miyoko Sakashita, a San Francisco attorney, wrote the 41-page seal petition for the groups. The endangered monk seals, mostly found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, have seen an ongoing population decline. Fishermen were once blamed for depleting seal populations by taking lobsters from the NWHI. The fishermen-stealing-the-seals’-meal theory has been debunked. Now food availability, sharks, habitat loss and pollution are seen as pushing Hawai‘i seals to “the brink of extinction.” Extinction is a fear.…

▪ Aloha from the Friendly Isle of Moloka‘i. With all the reports of fishermen on the other islands landing big ‘ahi, I began to get a little envious. So far, no one here has landed one over 100 lbs. I hope by next month I’ll be able to report differently. On the “catching” side of fishing, Greg Loiurio, owner of G & M Variety, a local Moloka‘i business that sells a variety of products, including, of course, fishing equipment, entered an ulua tournament. Mind you, this guy is still on the learning side of the fishing curve, always trying new things and eager for any new technique. Big Ulua, Big Winner! ▪ Late on Thursday afternoon, June 5, 2008, I started fishing in the S. Tokunaga Store Ulua Challenge. The beginning of my tournament was a rough one. I could not get the spot I wanted because someone recently stole something from the landowner, so he did not allow us access. So I had to think of a new plan at the last minute. On the way home (Papaikou) from Hilo, I passed the spot where I had caught my first ulua three years ago. So I packed my camping gear and rushed to that spot. I had to take multiple trips up and down the cliff to where I was going to set up camp for the weekend. At about 5 p.m. Uncle Pogo joined me…

Citizen Lawsuits and Uncertain State Requirements Loom ▪ In response to a federal court order, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a draft permit for millions of recreational vessels for “normal operational discharges” that could open a Pandora’s box of compliance problems and unfairly subject recreational boaters—including those who own canoes and kayaks—to potential nuisance lawsuits. The EPA draft puts boaters and anglers squarely under new Clean Water Act regulations that go into effect September 30, 2008. The permit requires boaters to comply with a set of worrisome national requirements as well as additional state requirements “to be determined.” Penalties carry up to a $32,500 daily fine for each violation. ▪ ‘Ahi were everywhere! It seemed like the good old days when the tuna came to the Windward Coast and many fishermen had a chance to catch a great-eating fish. The ocean seemed to be conducive to trolling with tradewind conditions, and the FADs seemed active with smaller fish attracting the large ones. We even had a dead sperm whale carcass float by. Mark Wildman on the AIGLE DE MER took some photos, and Alex Werjefeld got some stunning underwater camera footage. If not for the high price of oil affecting every aspect of our lives by increasing the price of everything we purchase, it would have been a great month. ▪ Aloha! The Waianae Boat Fishing Club’s Ahi Fever 2008 is over. Whew! One of Wai‘anae’s largest annual events, Ahi Fever had 200 participants all reeling to go and catch some fish! The 2008 Ahi Fever tournament committee, led by Chairman Norman Swift, worked hard again this year to put on another great tournament, and the participants were not disappointed. Heineken stepped up to the plate this year as the major sponsor, and their support, as well as the prizes they provided, was greatly appreciated. Thanks to Heineken and other sponsors, prizes were awarded every half-hour over the radio. Thirty teams won prizes ranging from T-shirts and key chains, to Shimano rods, a reel donated by Shimano and another Shimano reel filled with line donated by Nanko Hawaii. The McKenna…

▪ This June, fishing was exceptionally different. Usually as summer approaches, blue marlin of all sizes are spread throughout Kona waters, we start to see more striped marlin, the swordfish and albacore tuna night bite is just beginning, and the ‘ahi become scarce. This year it was completely the opposite. Last June, a total of 132 blue marlin and 34 striped marlin were reported. This June there were only 60 blue marlin and 12 striped marlin. Out of the 60 blue marlin reported, 31 were tagged and released. Although the marlin numbers dropped by more than 50 percent, we still saw 11 blue marlin over 500 lbs, two of which weighed more than 900 lbs.
