▪ My dad always says that Moloka‘i is as mysterious as Scheherazade of a thousand veils. Behind one of these veils lies an amazing array of crab life. I have learned about only a few of the many different varieties. One of the favorites in Moloka‘i is the Samoan crab. It lives mostly in the shallow mud of the mangroves, along with the ala‘eke, or half-breed crab. Samoan crabs are huge and delicious. Lately, the Samoan crabs have had a dwindling population. So, many of the fish-pond restoration projects have raised these crabs and sold them as a fundraiser. Another tasty Moloka‘i crab is the ala mihi, which live under rocks. Mr. Bob Maynard, As the president of the Waialua Boat Club, I wanted to formally thank you and Aloha Petroleum for doing the boaters of Hawai‘i a great service by providing non-ethanol gas for us to purchase. As you know, the state’s decision to require ethanol in our fuel has caused numerous problems for boaters. I personally went through months of trying to solve a fuel problem in my boat. I believe because my problems coincided with the advent of the ethanol additive that it was the cause or at least part of the cause of my problems. ▪ Déjà vu. The numbers for the month were almost exactly the same as last year’s numbers, except we’ve seen fewer big blues. Sixteen marlin weighing more than 500 lbs each were brought to the scales versus last year’s 19. July is one of the busiest and better months of the fishing year. There were five tournaments: the Maui Jim Series held their annual Firecracker and Skins Marlin Derby; the World Cup tournament was held on July 4; the HBGFC held the Rock N Reel; and the month ended with a big bang of a tournament, the Huggo’s Wahine Tournament, held strictly so that women anglers could go out and have fun. ▪ On the morning of July 15, a beautiful Sunday, 20 teams were on hand to participate in the Hilo Trollers July Tournament. At 5:30 a.m., fishermen headed out in all directions in the hopes of catching the “big ones.” As the day went by, teams reported hookups and some lost their fish. By the end of the day, a total of three marlin, two ‘ahi, 13 ono, five mahimahi and 178.5 lbs of other fish were brought to the scales by 13 teams. The highlight of the tournament took place aboard the LAWAI‘A when Capt. Van Uemura and angler Justin Matsu landed one marlin and two ono. The marlin weighed in at 302.1 lbs. ▪ The July billfish bite was almost identical to June’s, with 11 blue marlin, two striped marlin and six spearfish weighed. Another three blue marlin were tagged and released. The excitement was that the biggest fish in almost five years was weighed during the month. Maui’s Monster Marlin It was a “grand” day for the START ME UP LA DAT, which weighed a 1,026.4-lb blue marlin for anglers Jim Bierd, Luke and Jordan Bixler and Mike Skaggs. They were fishing with Capt. Ryan “Ryno” Fiedorowicz and crewman Ed Nevrivy. Ryno trolled down the south side ledge off Lana‘i to the Palaoa Point Lighthouse. ▪ Tanya Beirne is no malahini to the sport of free-dive spear fishing. She is an avid spear fisher with a history of success in competition free diving. In 2005 Tanya represented Hawai‘i as a member of “Team Happa” Hawaii. As a Hawaiian native with more than 30 years of spear fishing to her credit, Tanya has taken the sport to new levels for local wahine divers. Previously, this sport was perceived to be for men on an island where women have traditionally complemented the ‘aina. Tanya is an Olympic-class swimmer and state record-holder. On August 9, 2007, Tanya competed for her title at Fort Bragg, California (Noyo Harbor), in the 2007 Spearfishing Freedive Nationals. This was Tanya’s fifth Nationals competition. ▪ The Keehi Boat Club (KBC) will hold their 2007 Annual Open Jackpot and Wahine Fishing Tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, 2007. The Jackpot Tournament will be on Saturday, and the Wahine Tournament on Sunday. For each tournament, there will be a grand prize for the largest fish and smaller prizes for the largest and second largest fish in the marlin, ‘ahi, mahimahi and ono categories. ▪ Twenty-eight teams participated in the Hilo Trollers/Dodd Balock Memorial Tournament held on August 5. The August tournament is dedicated to Dodd Balock, a former Fisherman of the Year who died in a boating accident. For this annual tournament, Sue Parsons, Dodd’s sister, donated the following monetary prizes for the three largest fish caught: first place $1,200; second place $600; third place $300; $200 donated to Hawaii Island Contractors Scholarship Fund; $1,000 to the Hilo Trollers and a beautiful perpetual koa trophy. The weather report on tournament day called for partly sunny conditions with some localized showers. The wind was blowing east-northeast at 6 to 12 mph, so it turned out to be a beautiful day. ▪ The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has received numerous public complaints in recent years over destructive and prohibited activities taking place at the Mokule‘ia section of Ka‘ena Point Park. These have included fires on the beaches, off-road vehicles driving off established roads, camping, large “rave” parties, consumption of alcohol, use of illicit drugs, dumping and destruction of public property. Protection of the natural and cultural resources at Ka‘ena Point is the responsibility of DLNR, but ultimately it is everyone’s responsibility as well. This area contains the Ka‘ena Point State Park Reserve (Mokule’ia section) as well as the Ka‘ena Point Natural Area Reserve. ▪ After three years of preparations, a long-awaited trip finally commenced with the arrival of Jon (Yosh) Yoshihara, his nephew Alex Matsumoto, and John Kurahara. The trip was Alex’s graduation present from his Uncle Jon, and Alex was raring to grapple with some serious pole benders. Most of us at graduation just got a lei, a kick on the backside and advice to “get a life.” Alex took full advantage of his graduation gift with six and a half days of nonstop popping. The Fleet Is In ▪ A few months ago, I received a call from a ’yak angler who went by the name of “Boogie-D.” Mr. D was very excited about taking fish from a kayak and kayaking in general. After we talked story a while, I found out that the D is for Dave and the Boogie came from all the time he spent on a boogie board. Now Dave has been bitten by the kayak bug. Dave has been living on the North Shore of O‘ahu for years. He started making downwind runs in his ’yak, catching papio and ulua along the way. Then he caught two mahimahi. I’m sure they all have a purpose. However, if there is one tournament that has a greater purpose, serves a greater need and comes from a higher order, it’s the Daniel Perreira Memorial Spearfishing Tournament. My son and I have been active participants for 12 years now. I remember our first tournament. Mark was just 4 years old. We spent a few days in the water, “small kine” training leading up to the event. It was during those training sessions that Mark speared his first manini, po‘opa‘a and tako. ▪ In their first time participating in the contest, the Moana Mamas came away with the biggest fish at the 12th Annual Huggo’s Na Pua O Ke Kai Wahine Fishing Tournament, held on July 28. The Mamas’ Sanoe Sakata of Holualoa reeled in a 474½-lb blue marlin to win the Big Fish Trophy at the event. The Mamas sealed their big fish toward the end of the day. Sanoe hooked up at 2:05 p.m. and reeled the marlin aboard in about seven and a half minutes. She said she was “stoked” about the catch. The biggest fish she’d caught previously was a 2-lb papio. The Mamas–Sanoe, Momi Biven, Lenyle Hing, Cassie Campogan and Lehua Bush–all young mothers out for a day of fishing, earned 20 percent of the take. The…

▪ Maalaea Boat and Fishing Club will have to delay hosting its Lanai Rendezvous Fishing Tournament, which is normally held in August on Admission’s Day weekend each year. The club has been informed that due to the current status of the Manele Harbor Improvement Project by the state of Hawaii, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, we will not be able schedule the event at its usual time. This fishing tournament has been a very popular, traditional event for 36 years, one that is supported by fishermen and friends throughout the state. The Maalaea Boat and Fishing Club is committed to continuing its role in sponsoring this tournament and is looking forward to once again hosting the event when the conditions at Manele Harbor allow it to take place. Freshwater Angling Versus Saltwater Angling ▪ Lately, we have welcomed several hundred anglers who bring their saltwater equipment and expertise to freshwater still fishing. Apart from both practices using a basic rod, line and hook, there is absolutely no comparison. When you fish in salt water, you are dealing with clear water versus generally opaque fresh water; therefore, the tactics for successful angling change. Saltwater angling depends upon attack on baits that are clearly visible, whereas success with the freshwater fish depends more upon their chemoreceptors, or smell senses. To illustrate how ridiculous some local bait situations are, take the example of fishing for steel head trout in the Klammath River in California using blackberry jam as an attractant.
