■ On the night of June 14, Oskie Rice and I went out to go ika-shibi for some big ‘ahi. Right around 10:30, we caught our first 100-lb ‘ahi. I was stoked; it was the first one I ever caught. Oskie said, “Just wait. Once 3 o’clock comes around, the fish will really start biting.” Sure enough, he was right. Once 3 o’clock hit, the lines were going off. We had a double strike. We yanked the two ‘ahi to the surface and noticed that a blue shark and another free-swimming ‘ahi had come up with them. We pulled the two ‘ahi into the boat before the shark could get a taste. ■ August 2005 found me returning to one of my favorite places on Earth, the Hawaiian Islands. What a good time I had visiting old friends again, friends who’ve proven to be faithful to the sports we love so much: fishing and longcasting. Chuck: If you recall from my article on ‘aweoweo in HFN, I made a plea for a fresh specimen of a large Cookeolus japonicus (the largest of the four species that occur in Hawai‘i), so I could get a good color photo for my new book on the reef and shore fishes of Hawai‘i. John Gushiken, a fisherman on O‘ahu, responded by catching one in 140 fathoms off Makapu‘u Point on May 29 and donated it to the Bishop Museum. The fish was 23 inches long and weighed 7.5 lbs. Well, this story is mainly about Stephen Yoshimoto and his friend Daniel Maetani, as told to me by Steve while we were sitting around “chewing the rag” and drinking beer in ‘Aiea at the home of Rodney Mangrobang. Every Wednesday, Rodney opens his garage for a gathering of friends, just to “shoot the bull” and talk about anything under the sun including fish stories. Hawai‘i’s Ambassador to Re-Crown the Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a as the Official State Fish ■ Back in the early ‘60s, I was asked by many visiting Canadians, “Why doesn’t Hawai‘i have souvenirs made in Hawai‘i rather than the Philippines?” As a hobby I started painting humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua‘a on matured coconuts and giving them as gifts. Dear Chuck, Mike Sakamoto’s article about Marine Protected Areas certainly revealed how little our “leaders” know about the marine environment. It seems obvious they do no fishing or diving along our shores. However, I have fished and headed fisheries development programs in Guam, Palau, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Papua New Guinea and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean for many years that now have wonderful diving and fishing areas. Our focus was to develop good fishing and diving areas-not close them. It blows me away that the environmental “wackos” think that by closing an area to fishing, the surplus fish will move out to the adjoining areas. He had been hoping to go out fishing with his good friend Jim Ward on his boat, the OFFSHORE HUNTER, in May, but he wasn’t feeling well enough. ■ I have so, so many memories of time spent with Terry–the bountiful catches, the “big one” and the one that got away. Some of the more memorable moments had nothing to do with fish, but just being out on the boat for overnight fishing trips. One time, several years ago, on THE OTHER WOMAN, we pulled into Molokini to spend the night. We tied up to what we thought to be a mooring buoy only to find out the next morning that it was an unexploded Navy ordnance. ■ The Midwest Diving Council (MDC) was host to this year’s Freedive Spearfishing National Championships in Table Rock Lake, Kimbering City, Missouri. The MDC was thankful to have the Hawai‘i participants, six men’s teams representing the state of Hawai‘i. The local boys made up about one-third of the total teams (16 men’s and three women’s teams) that competed in the tournament, sanctioned by the Underwater Society of America. Phil Lamm, president of the MDC, said that the friendliness and good sportsmanship shown by the young Hawaiian teams echoed throughout the city. Phil kindly announced at the banquet that if there were an award for good-looking young divers in this sport, the Hawai‘i participants would win the honors. ■ The Atlapac Fishing Club’s annual Kapapa Island outing was held July 6 to 8. It has been a time-honored tradition to venture out once a year to this deserted island to compete in this annual event. In fact, the founding club members initially held all of their monthly meetings on this island. This year, a new twist to their old traditions was added to spice up the competition. The new twist started with May’s Weighmaster Classic Fishing Tournament when the National Marine Fisheries Service sponsored a booth that promoted the use of barbless circle hooks for slide-baiting. The enthusiastic response from the public introduction of barbless circle hooks prompted the Atlapac club members to experiment with the new gear. ■ Fishermen know that having good information for a fishing trip leads to more successful outings. In preparation for a trip, you consider tidal and weather conditions, current feeding patterns, gear requirements and many other variables. Having this information allows you to make better decisions about when, where and how to fish and ultimately improves your chances of finding and landing fish. Fisheries managers are a lot like fishermen. They need good information to be successful. Dear Chuck, The Kaka‘ako Kasting Club (KKC) had an outing on the west side. The most exciting thing that happened was that Jeremy’s Tacoma four-by-four got stuck in the sand up to its axle. Fellow wheelers tried but had no success in pulling him out. Fortunately, if not coincidently, there was a tow truck in the vicinity. Jeremy’s truck was finally pulled out for $150. The lessons learned: • Do not stop! • Do not make sharp turns! • Do not listen to Chad! The outing got better when the potluck dinner got started. ‘Ono stuff was provided by Garrick, Keith, Jaren, Chad, Jeremy, Misti and Kida. Reprinted from the Star-Bulletin Oceanic Institute president aquaculture group Star-Bulletin staff Oceanic Institute President Bruce Anderson was recently selected as a member of a national task force created to address issues of open-ocean aquaculture. The Marine Aquaculture Task Force will look at risks and benefits of aquaculture in the sea and recommend standards that do not harm fish, wildlife or the ecosystems. Formation of the task force follows a recent announcement by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that a National Offshore Aquaculture Act has been submitted to Congress. It would authorize establishment of a regulatory system for offshore aquaculture. ■ I met Terry way back in the early ‘80s. One Friday he called me and asked me to go fishing. Terry did that because he only had two on the crew and he didn’t like to go fishing with only two guys. I jumped at the chance and went with him and my godfather, Tommy O’Brien. After that, I was one of the crew and Terry (and Sharon) became a very important part of my life. ■ The billfish bite dropped dramatically during the month with only 33 being captured. Only 17 blue marlin were weighed and another six were tagged and released. No striped marlin were caught, and 10 spearfish made it to the scales. An inside bite in the Kealai-Kahiki Channel between Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe continued around the ledges. Behemoth Blue A huge blue marlin made it to the Lahaina Harbor scales during August. Steve Schoen and Austin Crawford boated the 846-lb fish while aboard the START ME UP AGAIN with Capt. Trout Fishing Opening Weekend ■ The Puna Hongwanji Mission Sr. YBA club members held their second trout fishing trip to the island of Kaua‘i. The YBA members arrived on Kaua‘i on August 5. After visiting the three Hongwanji churches and food shopping, we headed to the Koke‘e Hongwanji Camp located high in the mountains. This year’s participants were Dale Nagata, Raymond Miyashiro, Glenn Watarida, Earl Mukai, Raymond Iwata and me, Roy Tomita. We arrived at camp at 3 p.m. and got our things set up. Later that afternoon we headed back down the hill to attend the Lihu’e Hongwanji Mission Bon Dance. We were greeted by some of the members, and after a couple of hours we headed back to camp. Billfish on a Fly, Part III ■ Henry Potts is credited with catching Hawaii’s first “IGFA-OK” blue marlin on a fly back in September 2001. Henry followed all of the stringent 1GFA rules for fly catches made from boats and caught his blue on the ROD BENDER with skipper Chip Van Mols and crew Steve Harnage and Del Wheaton. Henry used a streamer fly (see Part 11 of this series) rather than a popper and developed his billfish fly rod techniques by casting to sailfish in Guatemala. Across the Pacific, Chip and Henry learned the basics from Capt. Ron Hamlin, skipper of the CAPTAIN HOOK. Want To Own a Harbor? ■ Maui County is thinking about a free offer from the DLNR to take over the county’s smallboat harbors. “I am not selling,” said DLNR Chair Peter Young, of the giveaway following a meeting with Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. Peter said the giveaway, if accepted, would include smallboat harbors, boat ramps and the offshore moorings at places like Ka‘anapali. Some of the DLNR’s harbors lose money, but Ma‘alaea and Lahaina “have positive cash flow,” Peter said. Maui District harbors had 2004 positive income toward $50,000. The cash surplus is from thriving tourist tour boats, which pay 50 percent more in harbor fees. Commercial fees are 3 percent of gross revenue, while recreational boaters pay a flat fee based on vessel length. Peter said Mayor Alan…

■ The Department of Land and Natura Resources (DLNR), The Nature Conservancy, the Community Conservation Network and Hawaii Wildlife Fund are partnering in a new community program to help protect Hawaii’s natural and cultural resources. The “Mauka-Makai Watch” is similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program in which community members act as the “eyes and ears” for law enforcement to help deter, identify and report crimes. Local conservation organizations are working with communities to implement “Mauka-Makai Watch” in important coastal areas, and DLNR’s Enforcement Division is providing training to participants. “Community-supported natural and cultural resource protection and preservation programs represent a win-win opportunity; we want and need citizens to take more personal responsibility for protecting the resources,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “We’ve seen tremendous interest at the community level to…

■ When Terry brought THE OTHER WOMAN to Maui from O‘ahu in the summer of ‘82. We built a friendship that was full of adventure and great fishing. I remember our first outing. Terry called me and wanted to know if I would like to go out fishing. As we threw off the mooring lines and backed out of the slip in Ma‘alaea, we kept going, and going, and going in reverse all the way to the breakwater in the middle of the harbor. ■ • When shopping for fresh fish, check the smell. Fresh fish should never smell “fishy.” If it does, that’s a warning sign the fish is beginning to deteriorate. • Whole fish should have a firm flesh that springs back when touched, and the eyes should be bright, clear and full. • After purchasing fish, if you will be traveling for more than 30 minutes or if the weather is extremely warm, bring a cooler filled with ice or frozen gel packs. Store your purchases in the cooler until you arrive at your destination. • If you caught the fish yourself, you’ll want to handle it as commercial fishermen do: place it immediately on ice, or hold it in an aerated live well to which some ice has been added.…
