■ Upon entering Hilo Casting Club membei Scott Inouyes residence, it’s evident he is a true outdoor sportsman. An array of trophy-mounted game birds, wild boar and sheep adorn his living room and lana’i. But it was his most recent addition to his trophy catches that brought me over to visit him one July evening. A beautiful 108½-lb ulua that he had recently caught was mounted on his living room wall. I keep my dive boat anchored outside, and we use it to dive our favorite spot, Mana Crack, The Crack is a 5-mile stretch of reef that usually holds some nice-sized fish Current, depth and sharks tend to keep a lot of divers away. A Moloka‘i Summer ■ What an amazing adventure! It was hard to imagine. Just me and my uncles were going spear fishing! I had heard the invitation from the back of the truck when we passed Uncle Walter on the road. I knew that I wasn’t going to be the one doing the spearing. I’d just be there to watch, or hold the tee, but it would be a treat! I was very excited. The next morning, my swimsuit was on and my gear was packed when 7 o’clock struck. I jumped into the truck, and my mom drove me down to Halawa Bay to where the boat was docked. There was Uncle Walter sharpening a spear, Uncle Joe loading the gear, and everyone else helping out where they could.…

■ According to “RJEL,” the Ko Olina harbor-master and marina manager, it’s been a long time coming, and we are delighted Ko Olina Marina had the opportunity to host the fourth annual World Billfish Tournament at Ko Olina. Even though billfish were scarce, a billfish did win overall-a 489-lb Pacific blue marlin by Tim Tucker, a resident here, We were confident working with Mike Nelson, the tournament’s producer, this would be a great event, as are his events he has produced in Kona for a number of years. This year we made it without question. Just think-18 boats, 18 ‘ahi, six marlin, seven mahimahi, 12 ono. That’s a fishing tournament! There were 26 hookups on day one; 39 hookups on day two and more than $30,000 in payouts to 18…

■ The Shack’s first annual Big Game Trolling Tournament 2004 was a huge success, topped off by a 664½-lb blue marlin as the largest fish. The top catch in the marlin division was a 37½-pounder captured by Neal Adachi on the IKAIKA STRIKE FORCE. Second place went io Bobby Spry aboard the OPU NUI for his 34½-pounder. It was his second-place catch in a tournament in a row. The first-place ‘ahi tipped the scales at 157½ lbs. The first-place mahimahi was a 51-pounder, and the biggest ono weighed in at 26 lbs. ■ By now, many of you casters have heard the story about some guy catching a 97-lb ulua in early June from the North Shore. Well, I am that lucky guy. My name is Roland Tamaru. ■ Two big marlin started off a somewhat slow summer of fishing along the Kane ohe coastline. The KAMAKOA’s Keahi Adams invited the right guy when he wanted to catch a big marlin. Rudy Puana was aboard the boat when the two of them hooked and landed a 760-lb marlin. It was the largest fish ever for Keahi, who is learning a lot about fishing and enjoying these fine moments. One mile before the UFAD. Ken Tanaka took a huge strike on his 18’ Arima KDKOA. Ken fishes regularly in his retirement, and this day was wonderful for him. ■ Sam Scott pulled hard on the rod, which in turn dragged the large Yozuri Surface Bull popper through the water. The splash it created and the thundering sound it made was amazing, A second later, the water erupted and a black sickle tail thrashed the white water as a great fish dug down and disappeared through the foam, taking the lure with it. Sam’s rod bent over and the butt slammed into his stomach, catching him off guard. The sound of the screaming reel echoed in the still Palauan morning. ■ Twas a Sunday like any other fishing day at the Ho‘omaluhia Pond. Families had drifted in and out during the day, and the fishing had been good. It was a windy day, and some of the fishing lines had found their way into the greenery but were retrieved without major problems. Late in the session I had my attention diverted to one particular float that was lodged in the Elodea. It was pretty far out and right where the weed meets the current that streamlines it toward the outlet. The float did not respond to the wind surges, but tugged and seemed to counter the wind. New Deep-Sea Sub ■ A new deep-sea research sub will be able to carry researchers to 99 percent of the ocean floor. The sub will cost $21 million to build and will be sponsored by Woods Hole Institute in Massachusetts. The sub will replace the ALVIN, a Navy-owned sub run by Woods Hole. The ALVIN can dive to 15,000 feet while the new sub will go to 21,000. The deepest spot in the ocean is in the Pacific, the 36,000-foot Mariana Trench. The bathyscaph TRIESTE has carried two people to that depth. The ALVIN was launched in 1964 and ran 4,025 dives, 27,000 hours, 16,000 on the ocean bottom. It has carried 12,068 people. It pioneered work on plate tectonics, deep-sea vents and bizarre sea creatures. It rents for $10,000…

■ September, a transitional month between summer and winter, is usually the month with the least bad weather. It would be the month of lowest bad weather activity if tropical cyclones did not appear in Hawai‘i waters. The potential of a tropical cyclone invading our waters is about the only major threat during the month. Trade winds will still prevail, but the gusty trades will be at their minimum for the year; only about four days in the month. Northwesterly swell and surf heights are slowly picking up, but the very h:gh surf is still a month or more away. Southerly surf action is decreasing, but there’s still a chance of higher than normal swell from that direction.
