Aloha Chuck, We’re back! Last year was our “24-Hour Madness” trip. We had 40 strikes and landed 13 ulua in 24 hours. Halawa Prison Guards did it again in 2004. As we did last year, we hooked up with Merrill DeMello at Hilo Airport, and he brought along a newcomer to our hui, Kaiken. After leaving the airport, we did some shopping, bought ice for the coolers and headed to Hilo Town to pound some grinds; then we were on our way to “da spot.” This year Malcom Ahlo, one of our fishing partners who was with us last year, couldn’t make it because his father-in-law was very sick. ■ The Hilo Casting Club’s 29th Annual Fishing Tournament was held from June 15 through June 19,2004. We were blessed with a great week of favorable fishing weather as 118 participating anglers hit the Big Island’s bountiful shorelines in hopes of hooking and landing the big one.” This year’s event was another successful one. Twenty Three anglers brought 41 qualifying fish to the weigh-in that was held at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel grounds from noon to 2 p.m. on June 19, 2004. The event was emceed by Hilo radio starion B97 disc jockey Darren “D.C.” Carlson. He also emceed the HCC’s awards banquet later that evening. 100th ANNIVERSARY What’s Old at the Waikiki Aquarium ■ When local people meet a Waikiki Aquarium employee or volunteer, they often ask, “What’s new at the Aquarium? I haven’t been there since I was a kid!” If it’s been that long, just about anything we talk about is new-from the 35,000-gallon “Hunters on the Reef” exhibit with sharks, 30-lb ulua and a 60-Ib grouper, to the award-winning “South Pacific Barrier Reef” or the exotic leafy sea dragons. But what’s really new this year is what’s old, starting with the Aquarium itself. As the third oldest aquarium in the United States (only the National Aquarium in Washington. ■ The summer is bursting with fish, and tournament season is upon us. A baker’s dozen of 500-plus-lb marlin were caught during the month, and the largest fish of the year list was revised five times. No species went unseen during the month as all of Hawaii’s popular game fish kept showing up behind private boats and charterboats alike. Two hundred forty-one blue marlin were hooked, and 44 percent of them were tagged and released. Five striped marlin were hooked, and another was released. Almost 60 shortbill spearfish were hooked, and half of those were released. One hundred thirty-six ‘ahi over 100 lbs each were weighed in. We even had two swordfish and one sailfish. Hale’iwa Trolling ■ Trolling on the North Shore has been very slow. The buoys have not been holding much fish, but we still have some summer weather left to hope for more fish. Now that it costs more for the fuel, we need to make sure we catch something when we do go out. Bottom fishing has also been slow with the strong winds and currents on the North Shore. The North Shore Hana Pa‘a Tournament was held on June 23, 24 and 25 with 37 boats entered. With only 37 entries, there was a good chance of winning something as long as you caught fish. This year they had half the amount of entries of last year, and that was probably due to the high fuel costs. But with…

■ This story is not about how a very large elusive ulua was caught or what kind of bait was used or where it was caught. It is about aloha, camaraderie and people of all walks of life fishing together and having a good, fun time. During the weeks at the end of May, several best friends who have fished for over a decade came together to fish and caught their share of ‘omilu, uku and ulua. The fish ranged from 5 to 65 lbs. On Saturday, May 29, 2004, another group of friends joined the first group. In the end they angled and caught a massive ulua. To Pee or Not To Pee ■ That is the question! Being stuck in a boat and suffering from that last cola or whatever can be excruciating, especially when the banks are loaded with people. That is one reason that older anglers with some incontinence keep a 1-quart empty plastic bottle at hand. One quick squat to the bottom of the boat, and nobody is any wiser and public prudence has not been offended. One thing, though: this maneuver calls for shorts of the wide-leg picnic variety for ease in handling. (Sorry, I have no quick fix solution for the gentler sex.) Why bring it up here? Flotilla 1-18, Honolulu, of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering “How to Read Nautical Charts” class to the public at McDonald’s at Pearlridge Uptown. Classes will be held on Saturday, August 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $35 and includes a manual and exams. This course meets U.S. Coast Guard, state, and national boating education requirements. The course covers a complete review of all of the elements in Chart #1 including knowledge about the use of ATONS, nautical measurements, topography, hydrography, significance of vari ous symbols, abbreviations and terms. This course is highly recommended for all boaters, and especially for those interested in further training in coastal navigation. To Catch a Thief ■ Last month I wrote about the thefts and burglaries happening to many fishermen. A pattern has started to show: the thieves look for fishing boats on trailers in a neighborhood, and then they know which houses most likely will have rods, reels and various types of fishing equipment. Solutions to this problem are many and varied: alarm systems, dogs, good locks and especially nosy neighbors who do not hesitate to call 911 (the police) will help deter these criminals. ■ The Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Fifth Annual Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament was a great success. More than 50 keiki, ranging in age from 2 to 13 years, participated. It was a beautiful, sunny Father’s Day-interrupted by only a few passing showers-with keiki and their ‘ohana lining the docks and shores of the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor and casting for “the big one” that would assure their early pick of the huge assortment of prizes. ■ Enjoy summer in Hawaii waters. August is the warmest month over land and in the water. No Kona storms or cold fronts are expected. Replacing these two wintertime storms could be storms born over the warm tropical waters-tropical storms and hurricanes. August is the favored month for these storms. Over the past years, these storms have appeared in Hawaii waters so it will be prudent to listen to the National Weather Service marine forecasts before venturing into the water. Weather satellite pictures spot these storms. Trade winds will be the common feature as they persist through the month.
