2004 Old Reel Collectors Association National Convention ■ Reel collectors gathered in beautiful Fife, Washington, for the annual National Convention of the Old Reel Collectors Association, better known as ORCA, Blessed with bright and sunny weather for the activities held between June 2 and June 5, attendees were greeted upon arrival at the Best Western Fife Hotel and Conference Center by a tremendous view of majestic Mt. Dear Chuck, My friend Kawika (right in picture) and 1 went on an Alaskan cruise in early May with friends and family. We had a blast! One of our port excursions was sport fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska, the salmon capital. This was on May 13, 2004, I fought this 56-lb king salmon for 15 minutes while Kawika filmed the whole “ordeal.” The fish ran about three times until it finally tired itself out. According to Capt, Joe of the charter service, this was the biggest king salmon of the season in Ketchikan, It took both Kawika and the captain to haul this on the boat using the net. I caught it using a conventional reel and 20-lb test line. It was hooked up at 85 feet depth at about 7:30…

■ The S.Tokunaga 2004 ulua Challenge was held from May 13 through May 16, 2004. And what a successful event it was! A total of 138 anglers participated in the tournament, and 43 anglers brought in ulua and ‘omilu to be weighed. Each angler was allowed to weigh three fish. Categories included largest ulua (first through 10th place) and largest ‘omilu (first through fifth place). Anglers also had an option of tagging and releasing their catches, as prizes were given out to the anglers that were willing to conserve a precious resource like the ulua so future generations can enjoy it someday. A total of seven omilu, five ulua and one kahala were released to fight another day. In my opinion, this category should be a part of every shorecasting…

Tiger Shark Whale Rodeo ■ A 45-foot sperm whale carcass washed onto the reef 500 yards from Kapapa Island in Kane’ohe Bay, The usual DLNR warnings were issued to tell people not to swim within a half-mile of the shark attractor, Randy Cates, of mullet cage fame and owner of Cates International, was called to remove the 25-ton shark feast. His theory was that the anchor and line used to secure the dead Moby Dick was taken, causing the whale to drift closer into shore. His task, to haul the beast 20 miles out to sea, was made more difficult but was successfully completed. ■ One of the most resourceful fishermen I’ve met in a while is Kawika, the ‘ukulele guy. As the nickname suggests, David “Kawika” Hurd custom makes ‘ukuleles, but he also built his own “sititch and glue” fishing skiff. His adventures out of Hilo on his 18’ boat, the UOUOA, give him ample opportunity to test ideas and dream up new ones. Howzit Chuck, I just wanted to share with your readers a great day that I had while sailing outside Kailua, It was one of those awesome days with light trade winds and few clouds when most people would probably go diving instead of fishing. An Obvious Aquarium Release ■ One of us (John Ford) recently observed a small adult powder-blue surgeonfish (Acanthurus (eucosternon) several hundred yards south of the Honolulu Reef Runway in about 15 feet. This would seem to be the first record of the species for the Hawaiian islands, but a little information on the species soon tells us that this is not a natural occurrence. It is a species of the Indian Ocean, and it is also a popular aquarium fish. Unlike pelagic fish such as tuna, billfish and mackerel shark that can swim long distances in the open ocean, reef and shore fish are dependent on ocean currents to transport their eggs and larvae to other localities. Letter to the Editor, It has come to my attention that a resident is threatening the Thrownetting Zone at Keauhou Bay, This resident has property bordering the northern part of the bay via the park (i.e., restroom facilities) and the point named “Doc Hill.” The current resident has blocked the thrownetting access to the original seawall that had foot access to Doc Hill by extending the original seawall behind the restroom facilities all the way to the water’s edge, leaving no foot access to Doc Hill. The resident has also included atop the new/old seawall a chain link fence, making it the same height as the roof of the restroom facilities, In order for a thrownetting fisherman to gain access to the thrownet zone, he must enter the water. Hale‘iwa Trolling and Bottom Fishing ■ Trolling was kind of slow during the month. Only a few aku and mahimahi were brought up. Not too many ono or ahi were around either. Hopefully the ‘ahi will show up on the North Shore this summer. Normally the North Shore Hanapa a Tournament brings up a lot of ahi and some big marlin. Hopefully this will happen again this year! It has been too windy for good bottom fishing. The currents and winds have been too strong, and the fish have not been cooperating. Some lucky boaters have been able to bring up big loads of akule and ‘opelu. With the gas prices going up and up and up, a lot of fishermen have not gone out as much as they would…
