Hilo Trollers July Tournament
■ On the morning of July 13, a cloudy Sunday, 13 teams were on hand to participate in the Hilo Trollers July Tournament. Just a week earlier, marlin, ‘ahi, ono and mahimahi had been running outside of the Hilo and Puna coasts. With this in mind, the participating boaters headed out in the hopes of catching “the big ones.”
As the day slowly went by, teams reported hookups but some lost their fish. By the end of the day, a total of one marlin, three ‘ahi, six ono, seven mahimahi and 2572 lbs of other fish were brought to the scales. The fish were not biting well. Some captains reported that the water was dirty and green.
