▪ Year after year, island shorecasters are introduced to numerous fishing tackle and accessories that are not engineered for our local style of fishing. This year, there is a new series of fishing rods that was created on the Big Island. Creation of the Talon “CY” series of rods began approximately a year ago. ▪ High school field trips into the wild have never been more frequent thanks to a new technology craze on Hawai‘i. A maze of cameras, cords, hardware and Internet capability has heightened wildlife education opportunities for Hawai‘i high school students. Hi-tech cameras mounted in various stretches of habitat frequented by wildlife are the new tools for teaching students about the outdoors. The cameras also have infrared capability that helps to record at night. Researchers, students and wildlife officials on the island can then get online, plug in a wireless card and pull up past or present recordings. “We can use the cameras for monitoring wild turkey roosting patterns, wildlife law enforcement and even providing weather data such as wind speeds and temperatures, which may help prevent and control spreading wildfires,”…

▪ The Kona Coast is buzzing with boats of many makes and sizes with anglers aboard from all over the world. This past June, Tropidilla’s Kona Classic kicked off the tournament season in Kona with 48 boats entered. Blue marlin are being hooked in good numbers and released in large quantities. Over 40 percent of the 280 blue marlin hooked during the month were released. The largest fish of the month was a 790-lb blue marlin caught from aboard the FOXY LADY. Kona resident Mike Fuhrer of Kona Sun Upholstery and his father went out for a day of fishing with Capt. Terry Dahl. ▪ A while back, I was at the Waiakea Fish Pond in Hilo, practicing my fly casting. I didn’t have a fly on. I was just going over my back cast and making sure the flyline rolled out behind me properly. If my back-casting stroke was correct, the forward cast would shoot out over the slow-moving stream perfectly. Some people who were walking for exercise thought I was nuts. Lake Wilson Revisited ▪ The lake looks good with most of the Salvinia weed gone. The fish seem to be fairly plentiful, but they are a bit scrawny, in my opinion. I went to my old haunts by the fallen tree and did get some nice results. Red devils were just about everywhere; they were even chasing small spinners of the Panther Martin type. I observed some tucunare that came to hand, and they looked skinny to me. There were very, very few mosquito fish to be seen near the banks. By the boat ramp, I noticed the usual complement of threadfin shad, if that is what they are. Some anglers were having luck with the pongee; here again, the fish did not look like they were in prime shape.…

Jim was fishing off Bermuda when the marlin crashed a lure with such force that both hooks were buried in the marlin’s mouth. “The marlin made six spectacular jumps and then dived, and we didn’t see it again for an hour,” Jim said. Hi Chuck, I was freediving here in Kona with Bruce Ayau on Tuesday and speared a 112-lb ulua. I’m sending you a digital photo (that’s my son, Caleb, age 2). Luckily, I’ve met people who love any fresh fish they can get and are thrilled to get a big ulua. I had been hunting deep water and finally gave up trying to dive bomb the 60to 80-pounders that were on the sand in 90 feet of water. I felt exhausted and decided to swim back to the boat. About halfway back (it’s a big reef that goes out about 300 yards, and I was parked in the lee in 15 feet of water), I saw four big ‘omilu hanging out at a corner in the reef. The ‘O’io Experience ▪ “There’s one!” You catch sight of a bonefish nosing its way across the sand, hear the plunk of the fly as it falls in its path, see the fish turn on the fly, feel the tug on the line as you lift your rod tip, then experience the sensation of line racing through your fingers.
