■ The Weighmaster’s Classic Shoreline Fishing Tournament hosted by the Atlapac Fishing Club was held the weekend of September 6 to 8, 2002. It turned out to be the largest event held with 201 entrants. The weigh-in site at Ke’ehi Park on Sunday, September 8, was bustling with activity as 84 fish with a total weight of 664 lbs were brought to the scales. The master of ceremonies, Rodney Villanueva, entertained the crowd during the weigh-in, and queen Danica Higdon presented trophies and prizes consisting of PENN reels and rod and reel combos to 35 winning anglers in the eight categories. ■ Thanks to HFN’s coverage and support of the Ulua Tagging Project, we have been really busy this summer. We have been receiving a lot of tag kit requests and data on tagged fish, and we seem to be having a good ulua and papio season. Because of the increase in tagging effort, we have had more recovery information this season. Recaptures and Recoveries I wanted to share a few photos of some recent recaptures by some of our taggers. These photos were sent in by Hooheno Furushima. The first photo is of Kaikea Owens, who recaptured and rereleased this nice-sized ‘omilu. The ‘omilu was first tagged on September 24, 2001, and was recaptured on June 11, 2002. The fish was at liberty for 260 days and grew 3 inches.…

Tagging Tip EPOXY THE TUBE TO THE HANDLE. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PLUG THE TUBE WITH EPOXY. Sometimes fish brought to the surface rapidly from deeper depths need to be vented prior to returning them to the water. Changes in water pressure can cause the swim bladder to burst and allow gases to escape into the fish’s body cavity. In this condition, some fish will become buoyant and are not able to return to the bottom. Venting releases these gases from the body cavity, eliminating pressure on vital organs. To vent fish, insert the tag applicator at a 45-degree angle into the underside base of the pectoral fin. Only insert the tool deep enough to release the gases. Hawai’i Offshore ‘Ahi Farming ■ Charlie the Tuna is about to fly first-class from Hawai’i. Ahi Nui Tuna Farming Corp., a native Hawaiian company, wants environmental permits to annually raise 4.4. million lbs of bigeye and ‘ahi tuna. The tuna will be pen-raised for the lucrative world sushi market. Ahi Nui envisions anchored floating cages off Hawai’i island’s Kawaihae Harbor. The cages, on 216 acres of state-leased submerged land, will sit 2,000 feet from shore in 170 feet of water. The cage design will mimic the open-ocean models of Cates International, which successfully grows moi (Pacific threadfin) off Honolulu. Young, 30-to 50-lb yellow fin and bigeye tuna will be caught with poles and barbless hooks and be net towed to the farm. The tuna will grow out on a fish-based…

■ Offshore fishermen around the world now copy Hawai’i trollers and tow lures fished Hawai’i-style. Some, however, still think there is nothing better than a fresh bait. Those still willing to get their hands dirty will reach for a mullet, flyingfish, scad or something else with the smell and feel of “real” before they’ll pick up a piece of plastic. Mullet work great here in Hawai’i, too, said Capt. Pete Hoogs. Back in the 1970s, Capt. Hoogs fished an entire year with nothing but baits, both live and fresh. ■ When I met Greg Kenney many years back, I had a feeling that someday he would catch a big fish! We mostly played softball together, but in between innings fishing was the main topic of discussion. Greg was really putting in a lot of time ulua fishing and was hanging out with some of the best ulua fishermen around West Kaua’i including Eddie Tacub. Dear Chuck, My wife, my son, Jean, and his friend Kimo Colson and I had been doing some bottom fishing from a 16’ Boston Whaler along the Puako to Kiholo Bay stretch. The boys had been catching some ta’ape, two good-sized ‘a’awa and a few other small things that we put back in the water. As the southerly chop was getting a little too strong for the Boston Whaler, we decided to head back to the Puako Ramp. Wilson Lake Recently I had an occasion to visit Wilson Lake. It was a rewarding experience because I got a chance to visit some old haunts and an opportunity to look at some new venues. One of the old haunts is easy to find and not very much used these days, although I wonder why. Want to know how to get there? Drive out to Wahiawa as if you were going to Schofield Barracks. Ahi Fever, Leeward Style ■ I can finally say that Wai’anae experienced an ‘ahi bust this year. In late summer, fishermen were treated to an exceptional bite, the kind not seen for several years. ‘Ahi were caught in the porpoises, in the birds and in the blind. There were so many ‘ahi caught off of Wai’anae that many fishermen were called by the auction block and asked to pick up their fish because supply exceeded demand! Mel McKinney and crew aboard the CHAN SHERI cranked in more than 30 ‘ahi in one month alone. Some of the Wai’anae charterboats also got in on the action. The KAIMALOLO, captained by J.R. Open Letter to Hawaii’s Boaters ■ Despite the fact that the state boating facilities of the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DBOR) are crumbling, they are planning massive fee increases. It looks like I may have to start paying the increased “fully renovated” fees (35 percent the first year, 50 percent the second year, 57 percent the third year, and up to 82 percent by the eighth year) to stay at the same deteriorated slip that I’m in now, and I’ll bet that I will be paying these increased fees for a few more years before they get around to “fully renovating” my slip at Ke’ehi. Was looking at your 100 Plus Club pages last night and noticed you had me listed (which I’d not been aware of before). Also noticed that some guys have pictures and notes on their catches, so I thought I’d send these very old pictures of my two ulua with some notes in case you’d like to add them to your site. Never on Sundays ■ Many years ago, my sister gave me a Christmas gift that probably helped start my interest in antique tackle and shorecasting history. She made a copy of an old photo of a fisherman proudly displaying his 20-lb ulua catch at the top of Hanauma Bay, on the island of O’ahu. I thought it was a pretty neat picture. Hale’iwa Trolling ■ The trolling at Hale’iwa was slow, slow, slow! Not too many fish came up, and there were very few ‘ahi and marlin. The boats fishing out of Hale’iwa caught mostly mahimahi and small aku. All the trailers were wondering, where are the ‘ahi? Are the yellow guys coming this year or what? With the trolling being very slow, many boaters have been bottom fishing day and night. But even the bottom fishing is slow.
