NOTE: The following information was submitted as testimony in favor of protecting Hawaii’s Hurricane Relief Fund at the Hawai‘i State Legislature in Spring 2002.
■ While scanning the Western Pacific storms of 2001, I came across a very extraordinary, eye-opening event. Oh October 24, 2001, Super Typhoon Podul at 8 p.m. HST was located at 19.3°N latitude and 154.5°E longitude. Winds at the time were estimated at 130 knots, gusting to 160 knots.
The attached simulated satellite picture of Hurricane Pilikia depicts a mirrored version of Podul, flipped from east longitude to west longitude.
