Don Kida, son and grandson of fishermen, has been at his present location on Kamani Street, just a block off Ward Avenue, for the past 43 years. Senate Testimony ■ The new “Boaters Fee Increase Bill” (HB 2542 HD 2) has crossed over from the House to the Senate and has been assigned to the Senate TMG, EDT and WAM committees. The following testimony opposing this bill was provided to each member of these committees: To: Senate TMG, EDT and WAM Committees I would first like to point out that HB 2542 HD 2 does not uniformly apply its fee increases to all classes of vessels which use our state boating facilities. The lack of uniformity within the DBOR rules has been a repeat discrepancy in several state auditor reports. • The fee increases for recreational, commercial fishing, and commercial permit vessels which pay the “minimum rate” are based on the regular moorage fees [Section l.(c) (1)].…

Scientists Drilling Ocean Floor ■ Floating 1,000 miles from Hawai‘i, the deep sea drilling vessel JODIES RESOLUTION fights 30-foot swells to drill a hole in the ocean floor. Scientists hope to gather geological data about small sea earthquakes. Scientists on the 450’ vessel hope that by drilling a hole and planting a new seismometer, detection of earthquakes and tsunamis will improve. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say that determining tremors speeds will help pinpoint earth core stability. The JODIES RESOLUTION is run by Texas A& M University for the National Science Foundation and is part of an continuing project of a dozen worldwide universities and geological centers. Mullet ■ The Hawaiian term ‘ama‘ama refers to the gray mullet (Mugil cephalus). Similar to other Hawaiian terms, the term ‘ama‘ama is used to describe small subadult mullet, especially those reared in fishponds. The Hawaiian term to describe adult mullet is ‘anae. Although the term ‘ama‘ama is used to describe mullet, the term mullet may mislead people unfamiliar with Hawai‘i’s mullet resources. In Hawaii, in addition to the gray mullet, there are two other species of mullet. These are the false mullet, or uouoa (Neomyxus chaptalii), and the introduced species known as the Marquesan mullet (Velamugil engeli). Hawai‘i Eco-Tourism and Hunting Census ■ A 1996 survey conducted by both the Bureau of the Census and the USF & WS reported that 255,000 people(mostly nonresidents) spent $295 million in observing wildlife in Hawai‘i. On the same page, 23,000 hunters (mostly Hawai‘i residents) spent $16.4 million. The report can be found on the Internet at <http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/fishing.html. Demon Pig or Sacred Pua‘a? The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (USF & WS) has budgeted for 2002 a $750,000 grant for the Game Mammal and Endangered Species Management initiative. ■ The first part of the month was really great for the fishing fleet. Lots of mahimahi and even large aku made a brief appearance. The mahimahi were on the small side, but they grow very fast. We figured they could grow to 15 lbs within 30 days if they found a lot of food. The aku fishing was great for everyone who could catch them. They were large and very high-priced. Many trailers were looking forward to a great spring and an even better summer when something happened. The water turned cold, and the fish vanished. ■ Footwear that works well can be an asset when it comes to. fishing. There are several options when it comes to getting a better grip on wet rocks for rock hopping during a fishing outing whether you’re going for big ulua or torching for tohei. Old-fashioned tabis were made of rubber bottoms and heavy cloth in the upper foot and ankle areas. Though you may be able to find these nowadays, old-type rubber-bottomed tabis are not very good for gripping on wet surfaces although they offer foot protection. The updated versions of those old tabis are the sock-type felt-soled tabis. These provide a much better grip on wet surfaces, especially smooth wet surfaces. They are relatively inexpensive and provide ad-equate foot protection with rubberized surfaces around the toes and…

A Special Hawaiian Experience in a Float Tube ■ When my wife suggested that we go to Hawai‘i this winter rather than to the Caribbean, I wondered about fishing around the islands. We agreed on a trip to Maui, and I started gathering information. A check on fishing yielded two options: deep sea fishing for open-ocean fish; and shore fishing for the reef dwellers. Because my fishing is done with a fly rod, I decided to go for the reef fish but thought about trying something different. As we put our stuff together for the trip, I packed a float tube. Sharks Cove MLCD ■ The new area for the Sharks Cove MLCD has been approved. The restricted area for fishing will be from Waimea Bay to Sharks Cove. You will not be able to go net fishing in Waimea Bay, but fishing with a pole will be allowed. Although you cannot fish by net in Waimea Bay with this new law, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold a special hearing for akule netters. There may still be hope for them to net in Waimea Bay. Does this sound like a double standard? ■ Six blue marlin over 500 lbs were recorded at The Charter Desk during the month. The first boat to weigh in a monster marlin was Capt. Marlin Parker’s MARLIN MAGIC. Angler Scott Bates boated a 508-lb blue on the 8th. Capt. James Dean captured a 642-pounder for angler Brad Smithson visiting from Canada. According to James, Brad is an avid rainbow trout fisherman, but this was his first blue marlin. They had started the full day of fishing off by heading north to “the Grounds” where they landed a 126-lb blue marlin, Brad’s first billfish. ■ If you do a lot of shorefishing, one of the first and easiest lessons that you learned as a beginner was about hook selection. It was easy because for fishing with cut bait (dunking), there was no type that you would use except for an ulua hook. Unconventionally shaped, it probably left you, like me, scratching your head, wondering how such an oddly shaped contraption could possibly catch anything. We all soon learned to know better. ■ After my last day of 11th grade on Friday, June 1, a few friends and I went on a trip to Kalalau. We boated in on my 11-foot johnboat. Introduction ■ Recreational charter fishing is a notable component of tourism in Hawai‘i, with total estimated direct revenue of $17 million and indirect revenues of over $30 million. The industry attracts an estimated 77,000 annual participants and employs approximately 400 captains and crew members. Due to this economic and tourist significance, the University of Hawaii’s Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) initiated a study to understand charter fishing patrons’ motivations, related expenses, valuation of the fishing experience in dollar terms, and the characteristics of the quality of their fishing experience. The results of this study will provide useful information to fisheries researchers and managers, charter industry members and Hawai‘i state tourism agents. ■ I met an old Hawaiian man catching ‘a‘ama crabs from the Hilo breakwater. He had almost a gallon of ‘a‘ama crabs in his catch bag. I watched him for 10 minutes with fascination. This was the first time I’d seen anyone catch ‘a‘ama crabs with a pole (‘ohe) and line. This Hawaiian man was fantastic. I must have made him feel self-conscious. He said, “Come. I show you how I do it.” This was back in the early ‘70s. I had some lines set out to catch moray eels for Mr. Lee and Jimmy Okada. They had entered the Hilo Casting Club’s annual fishing tournament. This year saw a record turnout for our banquet with over 130 members, guests and family members attending. So, I did some sleuthing and, lo and behold, I found the little bridge wherefrom he gathers his live bait. Coming down the Likelike Highway from downtown, heading toward Kane‘ohe, instead of turning right to go to Ho‘omaiuhia, turn left at the red light onto Anoi Street and then immediately turn right onto Keneke Street. Follow the stream down to the Kakuna Street corner where there is a small pink foot bridge spanning the stream. There is an entrance to the stream right by the bridge.
