In September, the Hawaii Undersea Research Lab (HURL) conducted survey dives in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) as part of an initial study of bottomfish populations and habitat assessment. These preliminary evaluation surveys were the beginning of a multiyear project to determine the effects of commercial fishing and the vitality of the bottomfish populations in the NWHI chain. According to Dr. Chris Kelley, a University of Hawaii professor with HURL, bottomfish populations of commercially important species such as ehu and onaga found in the NWHI are possibly a recruitment source for those populations in the main Hawaiian islands (MHI). Hilo Casting Club member Rody Dasalla has accomplished a lot when it comes to hooking and landing big ulua. He has brought many good-sized ulua to various shorecasting tournament weigh-ins, and has won his share of those tournaments. Most notably, he won this year’s 2001 Big Island Casting Club’s Invitational Tourney and last year’s Pole Benda Invitational Tournament. He is also a member of HFN’s 100 Plus Club. His 100.5-lb entry in 1986 confirmed his membership. He also has won various HCC annual awards. This year has been a unique year for him. It all started, ironically, on his birthday, June 7, 2001. Honolulu Security Zone Recent terrorist incidents in New York and Washington, D.C., have called for the implementation of measures to protect national security. The U.S. Coast Guard has established security zones in designated waters adjacent to the islands of O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai'i and Kaua'i for a period of six months ending March 22, 2002. These security zones are intended to provide for the safety and security of the public, maritime commerce and transportation by creating security zones in designated harbors, anchorages, facilities and adjacent navigable waters of the United States. These security zones will be activated and deactivated via Broadcast Notice to Mariners as required. When the zone is activated, entry into these zones is prohibited unless authorized by the Coast Guard Captain of the Port in Honolulu. The following…

Winter-type severe weather in Hawai'i waters begins this month. Some of the worst weather in the islands has occurred in November. It is likely that there will be some bad weather days during the month. Mariners are cautioned that the change from good weather to bad weather can be fast. The following are the possible bad weather conditions that can occur: high northwest swell and surf, gusty trade winds, heavy rains, strong southwest Kona winds, squalls, thunderstorms and waterspouts. Southerly surf is down while high swell and surf activity from the northwest direction greatly increase. More than half of the days of the month will have higher than 5-foot surf at Sunset Beach, O'ahu. There’s a chance of a very high surf, greater than 20 feet high. The frequency of…

This is the. second installment of a series on Hawaii’s marine ecosystem and habitat. This segment will cover the ‘opelu resource. Although ‘opelu is a fish more common to a habitat where the ocean is deeper than 10 fathoms, it is occasionally caught from shallow depths, such as harbor waters. For this reason, it is placed in the shallow-water habitat. The information I have includes the biology of ‘opelu as well as the method by which the resource is taken by fishermen, so this article will be presented in two parts. NETTING LOBSTERS IN TIDE POOLS PLACE THE NET 2 OR 3 INCHES BEHIND THE LOBSTER AND PRESS DOWN BEFORE COVERING THE LOBSTER AND SCARING IT BACKWARD INTO THE NET. This method of catching lobsters (ula) is not new. Most of us have caught lobsters in tide pools when chasing ‘a'ama crabs at night. I have just gone one step further by chumming the tide pool so that the scent will flow out and call all lobsters in the area. You would be surprised what comes into a tide pool-especially when you have selected an area where people can’t dive (for example, a place with a strong current or a spot on the windward side of the island where the ocean is normally rough). Sportfishing Turtle Suit Data What about the ticking time bomb thrown by the Hawaii Longline Association? They intend to sue the state of Hawai’i over sport fisherman harming endangered green sea turtles. Is it time to hang up your ulua pole? Let’s dunk a bait and fish into the controversy. Green turtles are classified as “threatened” by endangered species law and are protected by both federal and state law. Do, Hawai’i fishermen harass threatened turtles? Reviewing'-the Honolulu Laboratory Marine Turtle Research Program data, it would seem so. Hunter Stalls $172 Million Roadway Hunter, former state representative and retired attorney Katsuya “Kats” Yamada is against a road project. He’s up against Ben Cayetano’s economic stimulus package. He is stalling the U.S. Army’s strategic need for rapid deployment training facilities. He doesn’t believe the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USF&WS) should receive 9,345 acres. Last, but not Iqast, he is fooling with the most powerful man in Hawai’i, Sen. Daniel Inouye, and his $172 million Saddle Road realignment project. What is Kats doing? The Hawai’i island 47-mile Saddle Road realignment, a pet project of Sen. Daniel Inouye, will link Kona and Hilo with an improved road. At question for Kats is a 1.5-mile section of lava field road at the 6,000-foot elevation that crosses the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA).…

Where Are the Fish? If there was one question on everyone’s mind, it was that one. Earlier in the year at least some medium and large aku were around to keep things interesting. Live-baiting for marlin was the only high-percentage strategy during the month. Catching a bait, however, was quite the challenge. Many buoy fishermen were so frustrated by trying to catch a bait on the ledge that they gave up, went to one of the buoys and live-baited with ½-lb aku or an even smaller ‘opelu caught at the buoy. Citizens Enforce Clean Water Act Hawaii’s polluted rivers, streams and nearshore waters are one step closer to being cleaned up, and that’s good news for fishers, gatherers and everyone else who uses and enjoys these important resources. On September 5, 2001, Chief Judge David Alan Ezra ordered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure that all of Hawai'i’s polluted rivers, streams and coastal areas are identified. Sure we hear about gun accidents where someone is handling a gun, supposedly unloaded, when all of a sudden the gun discharges. But those accidents involve firearms not spearguns, right? Wrong! Sharks Cove Public Hearing The Department of Land and Natural Resources has written a proposal for the MLCD area from Sharks Cove to Waimea Bay, and the public hearing will be on November 13. Call the DLNR for the location and time. The DLNR scientist came up with the same crazy ideas, so we need your support at this meeting. Hilo Trollers Annual Awards The Hilo Trollers year-end awards banquet was held at Wailoa State Park on October 6, 2001. The master of ceremonies was Capt. Bob Duerr, who presented the awards. Cindy Juan took care of the lucky numbers. Thanks to the local merchants and members for their generous donations. About 100 people attended and were treated to entertainment by a musical group called “Times Five.” Every year the club has a raffle, and this year’s prizes included four round-trip for two interisland coupons.
