■ Readers may recall my article on shorecasting club history that appeared in HAWAII FISHING NEWS last year. A while back, HFN asked me to write again to share my interest in old fishing stuff, specifically shorecasting equipment and old fishing reels. Although this article and some others will be about reel collecting, in forthcoming articles I hope to cover many other areas that relate to shorecasting history. Because I am no expert and have no formal training in historic research, your feedback and questions are welcomed. ■ I was talking to a friend, Daven Tong, about this spot I had fished before. It had lots of fish, but you needed to cast at least 150 yards to get to the fish. Daven said, “Let’s try it.” So, we packed our baitcasting gear and left for the North Shore of O‘ahu. Daven is a very good fisherman. He is a good diver, too, and can outfish most. Not only can Daven cast a very long way, but he can do it left—or right-handed. I don’t know anyone else who can cast in excess of 100 yards either way. ■ As some of you might already know, our home and bed and breakfast/cooking school burned down this past July 23, and we lost everything. This has been a very horrifying and traumatic experience for us. We are living in temporary quarters (listed for sale) a few doors down from our property, until our place is rebuilt or this one sells. We are slowly resuming our cooking classes in the temporary location. However, we don’t have the bed and breakfast facilities at this time, so our classes are all conducted on an “out student” basis. Marine Angling Survey ■ The Hawai‘i Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have announced plans of a partnership to reintroduce recreational fishery data collection in Hawai‘i. for 2001. The new information will become part of fhe U.S. Marine Recreational Fishery Statistics Survey (MRFSS) database in coordination with the ongoing efforts of the existing Creel Survey Project with the DAR. The information gathered will provide fishery managers the information they need to ensure quality marine angling in Hawai‘i. ■The first time I tried bowhunting, I was a student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. I was lucky enough to have many friends who were outdoors-oriented people. We went diving for prawns in the streams and fished in the rich waters of the Big Island. We also hunted for pigs, goats, sheep and birds. The transition to bowhunting was easy. In fact, it opened a lot of hunting opportunities to me. The hunting season on the Big Island is so liberal, it was easy to find time to get out and hunt. Public Courtesy at Nu’uanu ■ The road on top of the dam is very slippery after recent rains, and the sides of the road are unstable. As a result, we have had to assist vehicles to get them back on the road. Therefore, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has been trying to regulate one-way traffic so that vehicles will not have to pass one another on the single-lane road. To accomplish this, the parking lot must be emptied before the next group of anglers arrives. The occupants of the last car leaving the parking lot usually tell those in waiting cars that they may proceed to the parking lot. ■ Midway is a great vacation destination. You may have noticed that I left out the words “shore fishing” in that statement. That’s because it all depends on what you want out of your vacation to Midway. If you are a hard-core, slide-baiting, baitcasting, ulua rod shoreline angler, then you may not want to go to Midway because using bait is not allowed. If you are a purist plug and lure caster wanting to raise ulua without any attractant other than your lure, you may not want to go to Midway because of the chumming technique used there to attract the ulua. The Fourth-Best Billfish Teaser ■ OK. I know. You don’t want to hear about the fourth-best billfish teaser until you know the three best. You’ll find the clue to the best in a couple of fishing stories. David Magallanes fishes off Kona on his skiff KONA PEARL II, often in the company of his 6-year-old granddaughter, Kasey. One day last summer, he and Kasey were dragging two baits when a marlin grabbed one and took off with it. David pulled in the other bait, stuck it in a tuna tube to keep it alive, and then set to work fighting the hooked marlin. ■ Over the past five months, the plight of Hawai‘i’s longliners has generated a tsunami of media attention not only here in Hawai‘i but on both a national and international level. We never asked for the attention, and it certainly has not been good for our industry. It’s not that we want to avoid media attention. We welcome the opportunity to talk about our profession. The taxidermy website is the most useful informational tool to any taxidermist-novice or professional. Aloha Chuck, I would like to share with you a story of persistence. My friend Steve Lau, who lives on O‘ahu, has been persistently pursuing elusive ulua for the past two years. What has added fuel to this drive is his son Joshua’s desire to achieve the same conquest. As most of the dedicated shorecasters can tell you, this is a hard goal to achieve, especially on O‘ahu where the strikes are few to none. Mooring Fees Launch Skyward ■ All Hawai‘i state mooring fees are, set to launch skyward, according to a Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR)Boating Division rate increase proposal. Fees across the beam are going up, with Ala Wai leading the run up the mast pole with a 185-percent increase. The mooring increase is being floated by DLNR officials on all islands during information meetings. “Splash!” attended Hilo’s Wailoa River boat ramp session. The fishermen’s scuttlebutt at the Hilo ramp was that any increase must be a dedicated fund increase with increased revenues going to harbor needs. The Hilo meeting was attended by fishermen including Michael Trask of the Big Island Fisherman’s Association, Carl Shioji of the Hilo Troilersand Sandy Masaoka of the Pohoiki Fisherman’s Association.Other concerned fishermen attended the…

Hale‘iwa Trolling ■ It looks like the trolling is not getting any better. The weather has been pretty good with some light variable winds and light trades. Some of the commercial fleet went bottom fishing just to make ends meet and take advantage of the weather. Big Marlin for the MOKULEA One day, Capt. Mark Glaser of the MOKULEA went trolling toward Kahuku. After not much luck, he decided to head home from about 4 miles outside of Turtle Bay. All of a sudden, sounding like a dynamite explosion, his outrigger came slamming down and line started peeling out of his Penn 130 reel. He had hooked up to a marlin that was jumping like crazy and putting on a show. Mark estimated that the marlin was around 200 lbs.…

Early on a weekday, just over 2 miles out of Wai‘anae Harbor, the starboard‘rigger went off. We were just pau setting lines: no breakfast; no sunscreen. No splash, no bill, no jump—but big. Dear Chuck, This is a story of a weekend of adventure. First, I went to Lana‘i to hunt the first weekend of mouflon sheep with my cousins and uncle. I was injured with a shoulder injury, but with a free ticket how could I refuse to come along as a spotter? We had standby tags but we got aboard anyway.
