Why Fly Fish? ■ How do you explain desire, passion, or plain magic? That was the problem I faced every time someone asked me why I fly fish. Understandably, many people here in the islands cannot fathom why someone would be so passionate about this locally obscure style of fishing. On the surface, fly fishing takes hours of practice just to be able to cast, doesn’t catch nearly as many fish as other forms of fishing, and generally costs more to do. In addition, fly fishing in Hawai‘i is even more difficult due to the coastal terrain, the trade winds and the local fishing pressure. ■ One of the goals of fishery management is to avoid unnecessary waste of fish. This can be done by minimizing by-catch, which is fish that are caught but not utilized. It can also be done by using to the fullest extent practical fish that are caught. Currently, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WESPAC) is addressing the increased retention of blue sharks caught incidentally in the Hawai‘i longline fishery. Until 1993, the blue sharks were released; in another words, they were by-catch. After 1993, the fleet began keeping the blue sharks for their fins, which are highly valued in Asia markets. Commercial fishermen note that the economic recovery (i.e. the percent value of the product that is recovered) for blue sharks is quite high. At $26, a set…

Get the Drift and Bag It ■ As I was driving to work on Monday, I heard the announcement that Saturday, September 18. was worldwide “Get the Drift and Bag It” day. On Thursday, I made arrangements to pick up a 10-person packet of bags arid data cards. My plan was to take my 9-year-old son Bradlee and his friend Jordan to our favorite surfing beach, Kealia. After six hours of backbreaking labor, we had collected 500 lbs of rubbish. On our way home, we dumped it at the Kapa’a Transfer Station. State Bird Hunting Closed ■ Hellish statewide forest fires and dry conditions threatening more flames have closed the 1999 bird hunting season. The record dry weather had a doubled-barreled effect, causing both devastating fire danger and equally disastrous poor bird hatches. The 1999-2000 Game Bird Hunting Season runs from Saturday, November 6, through Monday, January 17, 2000. Though the closures are called “limited,” they close two islands completely and eliminate prime hunting areas on others. While the final bird season announcement was not available at press date, John Bedish, game biologist at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), sent us a draft of the closure legal notice. ■ One of the best tools an angler can add to his or her fishing arsenal is a good pair of sunglasses. There is no need to spend big money on classy-looking designer eyewear, but you must be sure that your sunglasses will help you see better and protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. In subtropical Hawai‘i, especially during the summer, sunglasses are a must. One of the most important things you need to insist upon in sunglasses is polarization. Polarization reduces glare on the water’s surface to help you see what’s below. I have a two pairs of sunglasses that I use for fishing that help me see fish, reefs and channels, which definitely improves my catch ratio. Surprisingly, I have met a lot of…

■ The leaders that I normally use are long, from 18 to 25 feet in length. But for others, like Doug Lum of Kaimuki, a short leader is the way to go. Doug’s usual leader is anywhere from 8 inches to a foot long and consists of a short length of Sevalon braided wire, which keeps toothy barracuda from trimming the leader. At one end is a simple barrel swivel connected via a crimp, and at the other end is often a ⅜-oz rainbow trout-colored Kastmaster spoon. For some reason, this pattern works best for Doug. It has been one of his top producers for years now. Don’t ask me why it works; I’ve never seen a rainbow trout in the stomach of a barracuda. Some anglers feel that the…

■ It appears that on September 18, 1999, the future of longcasting in Hawai‘i was molded. The laid-back beach town of. Waimanalo on O‘ahu’s southeast shore hosted more than 300 enthusiastic spectators and 22 of Hawai‘i’s most energetic shorecasters, who competed for longest cast honors. The sport of longcasting is not a new phenomenon, having started in California in the 1970s. Also known as “ground casting,” it quickly gained popularity as far away as the United Kingdom when then champion caster John Holden teamed up with U.S. rod manufacturer Fenwick to produce competition glass and graphite rods and started exceeding casts of more than two football fields in length, a range so great that it was impossible to see the 5¼-oz leads as they arced their way toward record distances.…

Awesome Halalu Action on the North Shore ■ I received a phone call from Haleiwa Fishing Supply store at 7 o’clock one morning. Barry and Shawn told me that the halalu were going off, big-time, and to drop by for some “kick butt” lures. With that information, I called my friends Randy Lock and Rick Matsuo. Rick came down in two shakes, ready to fish, while Randy was trying to decide whether to fish or to sleep. ■ Winter-type severe weather in Hawaii waters begins this month. Some of the worst weather in the islands has occurred in November. It is likely that there will be some bad weather days during the month. Mariners are cautioned that the change from good weather to bad weather can be fast. The following are the possible bad weather conditions that can occur: high northwest swell and surf, gusty trade winds, heavy rains, strong southwest Kona winds, squalls, thunderstorms and waterspouts. Southerly surf is down while high swell and surf activity from the northwest direction greatly increase. More than half of the days of the month will have higher than 5-foot surf at Sunset Beach, O’ahu. There’s a chance of a very high surf, greater than 20 feet high. The frequency…

■ The ultimate event for the boating industry is the annual IMTEC Trade Show in Chicago, held every summer. For several years, Boating Writers International (BWI) has presented awards for the best new boating products exhibited at the world’s largest marine trade show. Dean Travis Clarke (Marlin/Sport Fishing) has been the chief judge for the IMTEC Innovation Awards for the past four years. ■ As I stepped on the hard mottled bottom of Arthur Flat, I felt the shaky nervousness of a first-time driver. This was it—Fly fishing for bonefish at Christmas Island. ■ I’ve told everybody who would listen that Shimano’s Speedmaster TSS3 is the best spinning reel for plugging the reefs. This is because its retrieve ratio of almost 6-to-1 is superfast, and the graphite body is light enough (14 oz) to work all day. But, guess what? Shimano doesn’t make the Speedmaster TSS3 anymore. I had two TSS3 spinning reels. After a few years of work, one of them became worn and a little loose. I wondered how I could get another one. It is a painful assault on the digestive track, causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as dangerous changes in blood pressure. In rare cases, it can be fatal.
