Playing Hide the Tuna ■ The Amway employees tournament found Capt. Gene Vander Hoek’s SEA GENIE II in the midst of a melee of tuna and shark. Soon after a triple-’ahi strike, a quartet of shark converged on the action and circled the boat expectantly. “All three fish were on 50 [-lb test] so we figured we’d be really lucky to boat anything but scraps after the shark got through with them,” Gene said. Hawai‘i Safari ■ There’s a safari in Hawai‘i that’s not just a surfing safari. Molokai Ranch has available for a fee a game preserve for selective hunting of exotic big-game animals. Joey Joao, who heads up the Molokai Ranch hunting program, told HAWAII FISHING NEWS that there are currently hunts available for eland, blackbuck antelope and Barbary sheep. The animals are hunted on a 2,400-acre range. Last year, the blackbuck antelope hunt was featured on ESPN. The price to shoot Moloka’i big game is big time, with antelopes costing $1,000, elan $1,250 to $1,500 and Barbary sheep tipping the scales at a grand. There is a no-shoot, no-pay policy. Guided hunts are available for $400 and include four-wheel-drive truck, meals, airport pickup, hotel arrangements and dressing and skinning of game.…

The shoreline was covered in a blanket of white water as Ted Teramoto and I whipped the foamy area for papio and hungry ulua. ■ Biologists from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have reported that data they have analyzed indicate that there has been a steady decline in the catch rate of onaga and ‘ehu from the waters surrounding the main Hawaiian islands. According to their analysis of Hawai‘i’s commercial catch records and landings information from the United Fishing Agency auction, the bottomfish catch decline is reason for both public concern and some kind of prompt management action. The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WESPAC) has asked the Hawai‘i State Legislature to take some action on the matter. ■ The big blue marlin showed all the moves of a nervous quarterback, but it eventually escaped the clutches of all-pro defensive end Tim Harris of the Super Bowl champion San Francisco ’49ers during the First Annual Pro Bowl Superfest Kona Marlin Tournament in February. ■ 1994 was a tough year for fishing for ulua from the shoreline of O ahu, but Hui O Ulua Shorecasters managed to pull in their share of giant trevally and other kinds of game fish. As a whole, the club landed 37 ulua weighing a total of 1,019 lbs. The largest of these was a Ka’ena Point white ulua caught by 1994 Club Secretary Eric Imasaka on a fresh tako at 5:30 in the afternoon. That fish earned Eric first place in the 1994 largest ulua division. Eric also captured the small game category with 27 assorted game fish totaling 102 lbs. ■ The Coast Guard rescued six fishermen recently when their boat started sinking about 90 miles northwest of O’ahu. A Coast Guard H-65 rescue helicopter and a C-130 aircraft flew to the Honolulu-based fishing vessel RED OCTOBER at about 5 p.m. after the vessel radioed that it was taking on water. Each aircraft dropped two pumps to the 72-foot vessel in an effort to control the flooding. After the crew refused to abandon ship, the C-130 crew also decided to drop extra life rafts and a survival kit to the longliner. Assisting in the efforts was the vessel MAUANA WAVE, which diverted from its normal operations about 30 miles away and arrived at the RED OCTOBER at around 11 p.m. The Coast Guard cutter WASHINGTON, home-ported in Honolulu, was also…

The sky is falling,” cried out Chicken Little. “The onaga and ‘ehu are disappearing,” cried out scientists from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WESPAC). ■ Big-game shoreline casters have always been an ingenious group, able to adapt a myriad of different pieces of fishing equipment for use in Hawai‘i’s waters. Two of the areas in which wholesale improvements have been made over the years are fishing lines and casting reels. From the very early days of Templar and Atlapac trolling reels used for casting, with their heavy brass spools filled with thumb-scorching linen line, Hawai‘i anglers have been searching for stronger lines and better casting reels. ■ The reflection of the quarter moon on the water showed us how calm the sea was that night. The deep rumbling sound of the ocean filled the air as the swells rose and fell along the sheer rock face of the lava shore.
