■ On Sunday, September 4, Capt. Randy Sasada, Brian Yoshikawa, Halii laea, Todd Tyau and Leighton Nakamoto got an early start to do some trolling off Maui‘s south shore, Their game plan was to troll first and, if they had time, to dive.
Trolling proved to be very successful; they were able to land two mahimahi right from the start. Soon after, they spotted some birds and decided to make a p-u-s through the area. Hana pa‘a, but this time it was no mahimahi. Instead, line was peeling off the reel, signaling a much bigger fish. Halii tended to the rod and brought up the sounding ‘ahi with no problem.
While idling down-sea, they bled the 100-plus-lb tuna. All of a sudden, the sinking outrigger took a strike. The team…
