■ Wether in Hawai‘i waters will play a more importent role in any marine activity during winter. Mariners are advised that the change from good to bad weather can be fast. The server weather events that can occue, in decreasing order of freguency, are: gusty trade winds, high northwest swell and surf, cold front with Kona winds, and Kona low. The strongest trade winds are the winter-type trades that can occur in December. The number of trade wind days will be low—only about half of the days of the month—but gusty trades can occur on about a fourth to a third of the days in December. Conservation Association ■ Founded in 1993 to stop the eradication of pigs on the Big Island, the Wildlife Conservation Association of Hawaii reported that all legislation favorable to protecting feral pigs died in committee. This year the group is looking for more hunter support to testify during the legislature. Lloyd and Lani Case attended the Hawaii Animal Control Research Consortium Workshop held in Honolulu. Attending the meeting were members of PETA, the Humane Society, The Nature Conservancy, the Hilo Pig Hunters Association, the DLNR and scientists from Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Billy Bergin, Waimea veterinarian and hunting advocate, also attended. The meeting discussed humane ways to manage animals that may have to be controlled, including pigs, goats, deer and sheep. There is another monster puhi that haunts a big cave on the north side of Ka‘ena Point, O‘ahu. When I’m in that area, I give “his” spot wide berth. ■ There were 154 teams that began the first day of fishing in this year’s Lahaina Jackpot Fishing Tournament. With no billfish hitting the scales during the Lahaina Wahine Tournament the weekend prior, the weight to qualify a billfish for the event was dropped from 140 lbs to 100 lbs. Tagged-and-released billfish were worth 100 points. It was anybody’s guess where to go for that winning blue marlin. Half of the boats headed to the north shores of Moloka’i and Maui, and the rest spread out toward Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe. At the end of the first day, four billfish had been found. ■ As a result of cooperative efforts between the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and various marine engine manufacturers, a new generation of marine engine technology is about to be introduced to boaters in this country. Manufacturers promise that the new engines will be easier to start, have improved performance and faster acceleration, make less noise and save money in fuel costs. These new engines will also be cleaner running, and most promise to eliminate the need for mixing fuel and oil. The EPA has sought to reduce the hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions of the 12 million marine engines in the United States. ■ On Sunday, September 4, Capt. Randy Sasada, Brian Yoshikawa, Halii laea, Todd Tyau and Leighton Nakamoto got an early start to do some trolling off Maui‘s south shore, Their game plan was to troll first and, if they had time, to dive. Trolling proved to be very successful; they were able to land two mahimahi right from the start. Soon after, they spotted some birds and decided to make a p-u-s through the area. Hana pa‘a, but this time it was no mahimahi. Instead, line was peeling off the reel, signaling a much bigger fish. Halii tended to the rod and brought up the sounding ‘ahi with no problem. ■ Whenever someone asks me which type of fishing I like best, the answer is always spinning for big ulua with surface plugs. It’s a type of fishing in which I’m always doing something, not just waiting around for the fish to come to me or my bait. I’m an impatient kind of gay, so whipping plugs is my cup of tea. He started bow hunting 13 years ago, and for nine years he has run an archery business, starting first in his home and now running AM Archery Shop on Mamo Street in Hilo. ■ After a beautiful morning of snorkeling at Pawai Bay on the Kona Coast, we set sail only to find a whisper of wind off Kaiwi Point. After watching the sails luff for a few minutes, we noticed a strong wind line farther offshore so worked our way toward it. A Fantastic Day ■ Friday, October 21, was a long time in coming. Joel Patterson, Al Dochnal and I had been trying to get together for a day of fishing for what seemed like an eternity. Every time we planned a trip, something would come up and torpedo our well-laid plans. Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians have spilled barrels of ink attempting to define “sovereignty,” “selfgovernance,” and even “self-sufficiency.” The result has been a general notion that all three must mean the same thing. Further, adding to the confusion is the endlessly repeated theme that the only good sovereignty is a “nation within, a nation.” Why? Because, after all, that’s what the Native Americans have, so it must be OK.
