■ For the first time in the 36-year history of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT), the team that took the top honors did so by tagging and releasing their marlin.
The San Rafael Billfish Club tagged and released five marlin (estimated to weigh less than 200 lbs) during the August 8 to 12 tournament, earning a total of 1,500 points, enough to beat the other 57 teams in the event.
A total of 58 teams, one of the smallest showings in the prestigious tournament in a number of years, participated in the 1994 event. The teams came from Africa, Australia, the Bahamas, French Polynesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Jamaica, the Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the United States.
