■ Every third week in June, Hale‘iwa Harbor really comes alive. That’s the week of the North Shore Hana Pa‘a Trolling Tournament-a no-holds-barred, all-out, non-IGFA, total-weight, catch-’em-almost-anyway-you-can, get-outa-my-way, here-I-come, give-me-all-the-money, dog-eat-dog, win-it-on-the-last-day-maybe, balls-to-the-wall, hook, line and lure shoot-out. And it’s nothing but fun.
Hale’iwa isn’t exactly a bustling metropolis (let’s hope it stays that way!), but when it’s tournament time, all the stars come out. The whole community buzzes, the town comes alive with excitement, and the harbor becomes the focal point. Folks from all over the island and state come to fish, camp out, see old friends and let the good times roll. It’s far and away the biggest event of the year on the north side of 0‘ahu.
