■ During the past few months, Guy Takamura and I pounded the shores of O’ahu, baitcast with fresh tako legs and caught all sorts of fish. The area we frequented the most was Nanakuli. We managed to land good-sized ‘o’io, mu, ‘omilu papio, yellowspot papio and ta’ape. Guy even landed an ‘omilu ulua. It was near the end of the year, and Guy and I had planned to fish on New Year’s Eve to see if we could continue our lucky streak. The plan was to head to the other side of the island, the cliff-lined shores of East O’ahu. We were armed with our ulua poles and light spinners. ■ Both locally and nationally, there has been an increase in the invocation of various laws that prohibit “taking” of various property owner “rights” by the government without compensation. Few would argue that any property owner faced with the “taking” of land by the government for the construction of a new highway, sewage treatment plant, or other project of broad public benefit deserves to be adequately compensated. We have clear constitutional protections against “taking” of this type. However, overzealous landowners are now claiming that other governmental activities, such as requiring public access to the shoreline, various fish and wildlife management practices and other regulatory procedures, also involve “taking” of private property rights. Dear Chuck, I am writing to you to share an unfortunate (for lack of a better word) encounter I had on Thanksgiving Day. The day started out as any other fishing trip does, with plans to go to the beach, cast out my lines and relax. Because I normally fish the North Shore of O’ahu, I decided to give the South Shore a shot. It had been about five months since I had been to Bamboo Ridge, so I thought I might try my luck there. ■ The clear glitter scrounger twirled and weaved its way through the crystal-clear water and then instantly disappeared into some thick, foamy white water. I prepared myself for a wrist-jerking strike, but felt nothing but my lead and bait. What was I doing wrong? Was it the scrounger? Could it be the wrong color? The wrong size? A bunch of questions raced through my mind as I tried to think like a fish and envision what a hungry papio would nail without hesitation. My “guaranteed” glitter strips didn’t draw a strike. Take it,” said the woman in the small boat off Kualoa Valley to Ross Putnam, who was in his new boat, the NOMAD, as she gave him the rod and reel attached to a jumping marlin. “We’ve never done this before. Can you help us?” she asked as they motored away from Ross to give him space to fight the fish. It was Christmas Day, and Ross was just out for a ride north along the coast. Maybe he’d get a fish for dinner. Then he saw the couple signal for him to come alongside. He did and brought in the fish for the two accidental fishermen who later followed him to Makani Kai and cut up the fish for Christmas dinner. The marlin weighed about 150 lbs;…

■ The Lahaina charter fleet had a good month for billfish during December. Of the 112 billfish caught, 53 were blue, 38 were striped, and five were spearfish. There were 16 additional billfish tagged and released. Four of the top 11 marlin of 1993, each over 400 lbs, were weighed in during the month. Most of the action was concentrated between the Lana’i Lighthouse and the MC-buoy. The area where the K-buoy used to be located was also a secret spot for fish. When the MC-buoy was hot, live bait was the choice for two-thirds of the fish. The FINEST KIND brought to the scales the largest blue marlin in over seven weeks for Lahaina’s charter fleet. Capt. ■ 1. Aku Aren’t Always Easy. Unless you know how. Arriving at S-buoy off the Wai’anae Coast aboard a Club Nautico rental boat, the NAUTICO 4, we could see 1-lb aku jumping at the surface, so we quickly dropped jigs behind the boat and slow-t:tolled them. Our lines were 10-and 20-lb test and our lures were tried and true aku producers, so I was confident we would soon be hooked up. Wrong As more boats arrived, the fish sounded. Our depth recorder told us the fish were holding well below our lures. The first hour passed without a single bite, Only two other boaters had been able to catch a bait, and they had succeeded before our arrival so I wasn’t sure how they’d done it. ■ “Saving Our Beaches” by David Polhemus (Honolulu Advertiser, September 26, 1993) focuses the beach access issue on the misuse of sea walls when in fact the governments have done much to limit access to the water’s edge. For example, at Camp Malakole in ‘Ewa. For approximately a half-mile we had unrestricted coral reef for decades. We were able to have large fishing outings on the coral beach and sit in the shade of our four-wheel-drive vehicles as we waited for bites. Now, access at Malakole has been reduced to one path and parking limited to 10 cars. For decades, fishermen were able to pull off the side of Lagoon Drive to whip in the daytime and dunk at night. A newly constructed curbing and “no parking any time” signs…

Pearl Harbor ■ December wasn’t a real boom month for Ron Gate’s KALOHI out of Pearl Harbor. The boat brought in lots of smaller fish: aku; small mahimahi; etc. During the end of the month, the fishing seemed to pick up and Ron reported the following catches: And then New Year’s Day arrived!
