■ Virginia Clinton Kelley died in her sleep early last month after a battle with breast cancer. Around the nation, family, friends and fans of America’s first mother mourned her death.
Virginia, an avid freshwater angler, lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with her husband, Dick. During the couple’s first visit to the Big Island of Hawai‘i in May 1993, Virginia combined her love of fishing and her commitment to the American Cancer Society by hosting the Virginia “K” 1993 Fishing Tournament, a Mother’s Day benefit tournament. At that time, Virginia was introduced to the sport of deep-sea big-game fishing and captured her first billfish, a 3872-lb spearfish.
