■ The 17th Annual Lahaina Jackpot Fishing Tournament, held on Halloween weekend, attracted the largest number of teams from across the state in the event’s history. Mainland anglers from Alaska to Florida also were present, as well as entrants from Bora Bora, Guam, Japan and Tahiti. The 164 teams’ were fishing for $82,000 in prize money, Penn reels, Fenwick rods and a Magellan Global Positioning System (GPS).
Capt. Bruce Matson, president of Showtime Charters and owner of the 47-foot sportfisher CORMO-RANT from O‘ahu, captured the $25,000 tirst-place prize with a 1,199.2-lb blue marlin taken on the first day of the three-day tournament. Capt. Matson’s son, Doug Jorgensen, was the angler and was assisted by team members Brent Matson, Tim Reasoner, Pat Nelson and Bob “Haole Boy” Bean.
