Dear Chuck,
I’d like to write to you about our South Point fishing trip. Chris Samonte, present holder of the 1990 record for the biggest ulua caught off of Black Point, O’ahu, was the planner of the trip.
My brother-in-law, Chris, my kid brother, Bish Merck, and I, the cameraman, went to the Hilo Airport, where Randy Hara, a Honolulu boy, waited with rods, reels and fresh tako. Then we went straight to Ka‘u. Chris, Bish and I, Bill Merck, are all from Puna. Riding in a small Toyota truck, we didn’t have much room for more.
We reached the point at around 7:30 p.m., and the boys started to go to work. While Bish and I set up the camp, Chris and Randy got their poles out and ready-all…
