Dear Chuck, In your December ‘92 issue, you had an article on page 25 entitled “Marlin for Cat Food.” I was absolutely appalled by that article. How can those people get away with that? As a new resident of Kaua‘i, I really appreciate the fishing here, even in the off season, compared to mainland San Diego. I hope I’m not the only one to respond to this article, and certainly hope those people are not longlining in this area. Coming from San Diego to fish “paradise” is a refreshing change. ■ 1. Lure Touring. Winter was coming on in Seattle, and “Tattoo” Peter Gardiner was getting homesick for warm days spent fishing off the Big Island. Tattoo’s work as an able-bodied seaman takes him to exotic places around the world (Seattle?) where he adapts Hawai‘i fishing methods to local circumstances and borrows their ideas to incorporate into Hawai‘i-style fishing. Ali of a sudden, I heard a news flash: “A Haie‘iwa fisherman captured a 15-foot tiger shark, believed to be responsible for the attack on surfer Gary Chun on the North Shore. “ Later that evening, I found out the captor was well-known surfer, diver and fisherman Perry Dane. Suddenly, Perry found himself in the center of one the biggest and most controversial stories to hit the islands since Hurricane ‘Iniki. Indecision ■ Although more information about the recent shark encounters continues to filter through to the general public, few people really know the seriousness of the actions of those involved in the shark hunts, or for that matter, the state’s Shark Task Force. After looking at all the media attention these hunts and debates have received, I found we have yet to address any of the questions that were raised when the problems began, including how to address this situation in the safest and most responsible manner. Is it in the best interest of the residents and the resource to indiscriminately kill sharks in a certain area when an attack occurs, and is it, in fact, smart to wait for an attack before taking action? ■ The Pelagic Fisheries Research Program recently established within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii has attracted a lot of attention in HFN. One of my first tasks as the newly appointed (December 1992) program manager is to let people know what is going on. The program was established through the efforts of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council to generate additional information on tuna and billfish fisheries in the Hawaiian islands, Guam, the Northern Marianas and American Samoa that would be of assistance to the council in the development of management plans. ■ When Mike Yee of the BARBIE Y saw a big marlin gliding by to get his teaser, he hoped the bait hook and the small line would hold until they caught the fish. Mike and his friends Troy Sakamoto and John Pahia work together and like fishing, so they were really excited when they found a mahimahi pile outside the W-buoy. They baited and hooked several fish until the 526-lb marlin came and inhaled their teaser. It had been a long time since any of them had caught such a big fish, and the thrill was terrific. Patient ANXIOUS Takes New Year’s Day Winning the annual New Year’s Day Tournament in Kona required being patient and getting anxious. Getting ANXIOUS, that is, Capt. Ed Isaacs’ 31-foot Bertram of that name. Meredith Drummond of La Feria, Texas, took home the $1,400 top prize with a 405-lb blue marlin boated less than 15 minutes before the “stop fishing” signal to end the one-day event. Meredith’s fish was the only blue marlin taken by any of the 28 entrants and may have been the only blue marlin caught off Kona that day. Second- and third-place prizes were awarded for striped marlin of 70 and 62½ lbs. Meredith’s prize-winner was caught on a purple-backed “Softhead®”, a lure that was slow to catch on with Kona skeptics when it was first introduced…

Lidar Research and Stock Production Models Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Dr R.B. Deriso’s angry letter published in the January HAWAII FISHING NEWS. In the last fifty years less and less independent sampling of biomass by fisheries research organizations has taken place. The reasons have been mostly economic and political. However, the result is that modeling of tuna abundance has come to depend on what can be recovered from fishermen: catch rates, catch locations, gear type, vessel speed etc.; the types of parameters discussed in Allen and Punsly (1983) and outlined in our letter in the November HAWAII FISHING NEWS. ■ Fishery management is the process of controlling the harvest of fish resources, or activity of fishermen, to best achieve desired benefits. Such management is important for a number of reasons. Total fish production or commercial yield can, at least in theory, be harvested at some long-term or continuous maximum or preferred level when provided with proper management, for example, through controlling fishing effort. The economic return from exploiting the resource can be improved for fishermen and for the nation. Conservation of the resource, its habitat and interacting species, such as monk seals, can be promoted. Conflicts between different user groups, such as large longline vessels and small trolling boats, can also be reduced through proper management. I’m writing you in hopes you can relay my mahalo and aloha to my good boat neighbors on Pier B at the Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor on O‘ahu, and heartfelt ho’omaika‘i to our harbormaster no ka oi, William Aila Jr.! When Hurricane Iniki hit our island last month, I was traveling on the U.S. mainland, and didn’t get back home until the first of October. So, seeing on TV and reading in the newspaper about the hurricane was a big pihoihoi for me! When I finally got back to Wai’anae to check on my boat, the harbormaster showed me photographs of the hurricane’s huge waves coming over the harbor’s high breakwater, flooding the harbor to a height above the dock boxes on the piers. 1992 Recap of the Lahaina Charter Fleet’s Marlin and ‘Ahi Action ■ The HINATEA, a41-foot Hatteras, was Lahaina’s top charter sportfishing boat in 1992. It landed 33 billfish during the year. Seventeen were blue marlin with a total weight of 3,907 lbs; six stripers and 10 spearfish boosted the total to 4,686 lbs. The HINATEA crew tagged and released another 26 billfish, the most among the fleet. This gave them a total of 59 billfish caught during 213 days of fishing-a 3.6 day-per-billfish average. The HINATEA’s top blue marlin weighed 404 lbs and was Lahaina’s 10th largest of the year. They had the fourth largest striper, a 95-pounder. The sun was slowly setting, and darkness was creeping in.
