■ Winter-type severe weather in Hawaii waters begins this month. Some of the worst weather in the islands has occurred in November. It is likely that there will be some bad weather days during the month. Mariners are cautioned that the change from good weather to bad weather can be fast. The following are the possible bad weather conditions that can occur: high northwest swell and surf, gusty trade winds, heavy rains, strong southwest Kona winds, squalls, thunderstorms and Southerly surf is down while high swell and surf activity from the northwest direction greatly increase. ■ Next to great white sharks, piranha may be the fish most feared by the general public. The piranha is one of the few fish whose name is universally recognized. And, thanks to the dramatic license of Hollywood movie makers, piranha are greatly misunderstood. The word piranha causes some to imagine a boiling mass of razor-sharp teeth devouring a human victim in seconds, leaving only a bare-boned skeleton. When a piranha was reported to have been caught in the Wahiawa Reservoir at the end of June, the flurry of public attention was understandable. Warnings were issued about “flesh-eating” piranha, and some sources suggested closing the area to fishing or even draining the reservoir because of the danger. Hawaii Council of Dive Clubs ■ Hurricane ‘Iniki is now history, but the massive work of cleanup and repair goes on, especially on Kaua‘i, although all of the islands felt the effects of the storm. Here on o‘ahu, the damage was more localized than on Kaua‘i, but the underwater landscape changed at almost all of the good sites. Wreckage has moved, sand shifted, and the bottom contours changed. A lot of divers got some firsthand experience of the conditions around the island on October 10, when they participated in cleanup around popular beaches and dive spots. Members of the Hawaii Council of Dive Clubs (HCDC) worked to gather trash and debris at beaches around the island as part of the “Get the Drift and Bag It” campaign. This program has…

■ The new six-channel Interphase Star Pilot GPS hummed to life and quickly found three satellites somewhere in space over our watery horizon. If only it could find elusive fish in the open ocean as easily! Unfortunately, the skill of systematically catching fish is even more unobtainable than that of fully deciphering a GPS operation manual. But there are ways to increase your chances of getting lucky. One is having the ability to home in on a FAD and find fish visiting. The GPS would allow us to work down the Penguin Bank ledge from our home base in Hawai‘i-kai, and then would guide us to P-buoy even though it was 30 miles from any landmark. Keehi Boat Club ■ Of all the yearly projects the club has, none is more rewarding than the Easter Seals Handicapped Children’s Fishing Tournament. Every year about 25 Easter Seals special children are brought to Pier 300 at the Keehi Small Boat Harbor. The children always look forward to the fishing tournament. Nicole Secretario is a regular; she always seems to win an award. Another familiar face is Dawn Horwath. Dawn was a poster child for the Easter Seals program. She is always checking on her friends and cheering them on. Fishing started at 9:25 a.m. Beautiful orange tilapia were donated to Keehi Boat Club by the University of Hawaii. They were big and edible. The fish the children caught were bagged and kept cold for them to take home.…

Oddities Without End On my writing desk I have stacks of notes scribbled on bits of paper. They are odds and ends of story ideas. Most looked like the promising start to a column, but each fizzled out because I never really knew what to do with it. There is, for example, the strange case of the moray eel and the trumpetfish. Those of you who have caught a trumpetfish know what an odd creature it is. Its mouth is a small pucker at the end of a long, trumpetlike snout. That snout is hard and ridged. If you hook a trumpetfish, you are tempted to grab it by the snout, but it twists in your hand and hurts your bare palm with the edges of those long ridges. The…

■ Fishermen across Hawai‘i talk about decreased catches of virtually every type of fish (except perhaps ta‘ape) in island waters. Whether they are traditional palu ‘ahi fishermen, second-generation bottom fishermen or malihinl big game sport fishermen, the hue and cry is always the same: fishing in Hawai‘i just ain’t what it used to be. The National Marine Fisheries Service concluded that 65 of Hawaii’s 153 species are presently overfished. A lack of information on 79 other species prevents a careful analysis of their status, but any fisherman will tell you that many of those are certainly overfished, as well. Moreover, we may never really know about the stocks of those species because we have no access to unfished stocks, no base-line statistics to compare to present-day information. One solution used…

■ The big story last month was the appearance of Hurricane ‘Iniki and its impact on the Wai‘anae Coast. Fishing prior to ‘Iniki was inconsistent at best. Several lucky fishermen were fortunate enough to run into an occasional ‘ahi school and were rewarded appropriately. The marlin action was just as inconsistent; most of the marlin were taken on lures during the first half of the month, and live bait catches increased toward the later half of the month. Fortunately, there were no deaths or serious injuries caused by ‘Iniki as it battered Wai‘anae. Several homes along the coast were destroyed, and many others suffered extensive damage from the strong winds and large waves. ■ Darlene Penrose used to pilot a 38-foot Bertram on Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, so fishing the blue Pacific waters of the Windward Coast was no problem for the Navy veteran. Darlene was a guest of Gerry Iseri aboard the ULULANI. Gerry invited Darlene along to show her how fishing is done in Hawaii’s waters. They both work for the Federal Aviation Administration as air traffic controllers, and for a long time Darlene had been asking Gerry and his crewman Matt Kailio to take her fishing.
