■ For Hawai‘i waters, summer is over and winter is approaching. October may preview the upcoming winter’s weather. There will be a greater variety of weather, but the severity of bad weather has not reached its potential. The following are potentially bad weather events, listed in order of decreasing expected occurrence. (1) northwest swell and surf (2) gusty trade winds (3) weak cold front (4) Kona low (5) north swell and surf (6) hurricane. Other than the northwest swell and surf, the expected frequencies of the other events are low. The frequency of trade winds is going down, but trades will still be the most common winds The number of gusty trade wind days should be low-about four days. ■ I was reading through some articles on tuna behavior around FADs, and I thought a summary of the information would make an interesting column. You may be aware of some of the electronic tagging studies by Dr. Kim Holland at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) that are going on in our own back yard. Other scientists around the world have also successfully placed electronic tags on yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), more commonly known as ‘ahi, or shibi and aku. Most of the information gathered by these experiments has confirmed the fact that tuna do associate with FADs and have particular behaviors based on the time of day, water temperature and fish species. Dear Mr. Rizzuto, Your article in the July issue of HFN discussing the catch of a 200 lb striped marlin and your notes on marlin identification reminded me of the problems I had identifying billfish when I first started fishing in Mexico and Hawai‘i. When confronted with my first blue and striped marlin, I couldn’t see any differences and went on a crash course studying books and photos to solve this problem. I found several sure-fire ways to ID billfish that you may find of interest. The distinguishing characteristics presented in your article undoubtedly work for most people who have seen a lot of marlin, but they all require judgement: a high dorsal fin, a slender bill, a prominent lateral line, and a low forehead. ■ The Maui Trailer Boat Club was well represented in the Lanai Rendezvous this year. Fortyeight gallon coolers were given for each winning category. From our club, the winners were: Sydney Medeiros of the KAMANI KAI who placed second in the Ono Division, Mike Fisher and the crew of the EVA LELE placed first and second in the ‘ahi Division, Harry Perreira and the crew of the DIRTY HARRY placed first and second in the Aku Division, Nelson Boteilho and the crew of the BARBONE placed first in the Barracuda Division and second in the Most Fish Division. Ciguatera fish poisoning related to the consumption of reef fish is a common problem in Hawai‘i. As a public health service, the state Department of Health is distributing a new pamphlet addressing the problem. Complete with colorful pictures of fish identified with ciguatera cases, the pamphlet describes how to avoid poisoning and what to do if one does get sick. The pamphlet is available throughout O‘ahu and the neighbor islands. ■ Stella Kaneshiro had cast her live oama hoping to catch a papio to show her niece and nephew Dion and Kyle Kaneshiro. She often brought them to He‘eia Kea Pier to catch whatever fish were biting and to just spend time together. After a few minutes she felt a tug on the line and yanked hard to set the hook. The responding yank was a strange kind of pull. She called to her parents that she had something on the line. Her parents said it was probably a ray or maybe an eel, but she stayed with it and began to work it toward the surface. ■ When I was a young teacher in Sarasota, Florida, Mr. Drumwright and I used to set gill nets for mullet. We would go out at night, and “Drummy” would wait for the tide to change. “To wait for low tide so the mullet would be coming out of the woods (the mangroves),” he said. He would look at the moon and tell me whether the tide was “right” or not. One night when things were “right,” we netted over 4,000 lbs of mullet and sold them for a nickel a pound. Every reef fisherman wants to fish a rising tide. A high rising tide allows finny predators an opportunity to actively invade the reef and search for food. In any free-diving event, there are three main ingredients to pray for: 1) God’s blessing for a safe event; 2) good visibility; 3) and cooperating fish, or at least one big one to make the whole event worthwhile. On August 22, the North Shore Spearfishers (NSS), the hosting club, were in high gear to greet some 98 divers from throughout our Hawaiian chain for the Seventh Annual North Shore Spearfishing Competition (NSSC). At 6:30 a.m. some participants were waiting eagerly in the parking lot at Haleiwa Beach Park. As trucks stood by to unload, every member knew exactly what was expected of him. Within one hour, tent, tables, chairs, stage, coolers, banners and flowers were set up. Everything was set except the table where two trophies were to be displayed.…

■ Owners of marine VHF radios should double-check the expiration dates on their Federal Communications Commission licenses—or be prepared for a very rude shock. A boat owner in the Seattle area recently received an $8,000 fine from the FCC for talking on his radio without a valid Ship Station license. (Just to put things in perspective, the biggest fine a boater could receive for dumping raw sewage into U.S. waters is $2,000.) Apparently an FCC monitoring station heard the boater give his boat name and FCC call letters over Channel 28. The field office checked to verify his license and found it had expired four months earlier. In March, the Commission imposed an “apparent liability for a forfeiture,” a scary sounding phrase for a fine, in the amount of $8,000…

I haven’t been out of the kitchen for a month! After our return home from two months on the mainland, the resident fisherman felt he had to make up for lost fishing time by charging off to Kawaihae Harbor every time the sun came up. Needless to say, he caught every mahimahi that had the misfortune of swimming within a 50-mile radius of his boat—good for the fisherman, but not so good for the cook! Ready or not, over the last 30 days I got the chance to cook mahimahi dishes in every way known to man. I called on friends to come taste-test the dishes, and even passed out fillets to those who were willing to create mahimahi recipes for me in their own kitchens. I’ll share the results…

Simple Marlin Mathematics ■ The late Marty Franich fished the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament for several decades with no luck. When he finally did catch a marlin, it was a small one, perhaps 150 lbs or so, but the details aren’t important. Marty totaled up the-thousands of dollars he had spent on billfishing each year and realized his marlin had cost him over a hundred dollars a pound. “But it was worth every penny,” he said. The same day Marty calculated the worth of that fish, blue marlin steaks were selling for $2 a pound at the fish market. Four-stroke 45 hp Outboard ■ A technologically advanced outboard motor is turning heads in the marine industry. ■ The slippery jumping jack spun in my hand as I eagerly attempted to hook it onto the #4 AH whipping hook. I hooked the jumping jack through the jaws and quickly grabbed my 10-foot Penn casting rod. The rod was neatly matched with a Shimano SpeedMaster conventional reel that was loaded to the bars with 20-lb test Ande monofilament. I was confident I would get a strike. The deep blue waters of Kaumalapau Harbor offer great whipping areas for the light-tackle enthusiast and, I couldn’t refuse the offer to fish with a great bunch of guys on the Pineapple Isle of Lana‘i.
