PRODUCTING HAWAII’S FISHERY ■ Like a cat with nine lives that seems to survive every time it gets run over by a semi truck or has a brush with death, the infamous sanctuary that repeatedly has been proposed for Hawai‘i has resurfaced and is well on its way to becoming a reality. Although the fanfare and controversy it once had surrounding it is absent, the reasoning behind it is no less questionable. It has been several years since the last major attempt at establishing a sanctuary was upon us, and when, because of the efforts of a great many individuals, it was soundly defeated. The resident fisherman and I just returned from seven weeks on the mainland, visiting our kids in Oregon, California and New York, and trekking across midwestern college campuses as part of our other lives. Dear Chuck, Last summer during the Waipouli Variety Fishing Tournament, Delrick Tada caught a 96 lb ulua as shown in the picture. His first place prize catch brought him within four lbs of attaining his lifelong dream of catching a 100 lb ulua. Unfortunately, on July 19, 1992, Delrick fell to a tragic fishing accident that took his life. Del was all but 21 years old which gave him little time to achieve the various goals he had set for himself. I was water-testing my engines after some extensive repair work and decided at the last minute to bring along a rod or two just in case a fishing opportunity arose. ■ Most FAD fishermen never really give much thought to the whole FAD system. The main concern is that there is a yellow buoy bobbing at the surface at their favorite FAD site. To have that FAD there, and have it stay there for long periods of time, what goes on below the surface becomes important. The accompanying figure shows exactly what is below the buoy. I want to point out some changes introduced over the years. ■ ‘Ahi, ‘ahi, everywhere. Not everyone could see them, but it seemed like all of the trailers were catching them. The fish were around the buoys and in various spots all over the ocean, but there were very few birds to indicate their presence. The majority of the strikes were taken in the north, and the ‘ahi were weighing almost 200 lbs each. That’s heavy for the Windward side. Marlin have also been seen chasing those ‘ahi around, and a few have been landed. ■ A three-way tie for first place and a two-way tie for second place! Those were the results of a very interesting, very challenging and very exciting new international tournament inaugurated by the Hawai‘i Big Game Fishing Club and held in Kailua-Kona. The concept for the Hawai‘i Four Flags World Championship (HFFWC) was spawned by HBGFC’s Freddy Gartley, a club officer for many years and an avid fisherman of numerous local and international tournaments. Freddy envisioned an event in which there would be multiple ways to score points and thus win the championship. As the name implies, anglers fished for four different types of fish: marlin, ‘ahi, mahimahi and ono. Three line classes were allowed: 80-, 50- and 30-lb classes, with bonus points for 50 and 30. ■ Pam Basco’s dream was to capture a world-record fish in Hawai‘i. The Texas resident not only got her wish-she broke her new world record just two days later. On July 14, the petite, 110-lb angler, who has numerous 5- to-l, 10- to-l and 15- to-l fish to her credit, successfully landed a 157-lb ‘ahi (yellowfin tuna) on 20-lb test after an hour and 15-minute fight on the Kona charterboat NORTHERN LIGHTS. Within 48 hours, she landed an even bigger ‘ahi on 20-lb test. ■ John Jardin of Kalaheo has won the Hawaii competition in the 1992 GOODYEAR/BASSIN’ Big Bass World Championship. By earning the state’s No. 1 spot, Jardin qualifies for the $100,000 BBWC Tournament held September 18 and 19 in Nashville, Tennessee where he will fish against 48 other BBWC state winners and last year’s world champion for the top prize. Qualification for the BBWC Tournament officially began January 1, 1992 and ended July 15. Anglers who caught the largest bass during the 6½ month period (among BBWC competitors) for each of the 49 participating states (Alaska excluded) won a free trip to the BBWC Tournament, along with other prizes.
