Norm Isaacs for 10 hours before finally tiring of the game and.breaking the leader. That leader shows up in the photo taken by SUNDOWNER deckhand Greg Brown, and its length provides a unique yardstick. ■ The Sixth Tahitian International Billfish Tournament (TIBT) sponsored by the Haura Club de Tahiti was as exciting as it was enjoyable. Alban Endicott, president of the Haura Club, engineered one of the finest and smoothest-run tournaments ever. For the guest-international anglers, Tahitian hospitality was, to say the least, incredible. One of the tournament’s objectives was to expose the international guests to Tahitian culture and the island’s citizens. The moment the visiting anglers arrived, they were greeted with smiles and rushed away to awaiting Haura Club families for extravagant luaus that lasted well into the night. This hospitality continued throughout the tournament, with each night more exciting than the previous. The Haura Club did a wonderful job. The first day of fishing provided good action. Super Bass Sunday on Kaua’i ■ It was Sunday, January 26, 1992, and in traditional fashion, millions of sports fans across the country sat in front of television sets at parties with families and friends. Recently the fishing off Central 0’ahu has been great. Even Capt. Ron Gates of the KALOHI was happy with his marlin catches. The KALOHI’s March started off with a 352-lb marlin. Joe Fausti brought that big blue to leader with the help and guidance of the first mate. On the 7th, the KALOHI was 3 miles off Nanakuli. Everyone on board held their collective breath while they watched a good-sized marlin take a whack at the outrigger, and a collective groan went up when the marlin didn’t stick. The fish then hit a corner lure. It was one hungry or angry fish because it then darted across and hit another lure and ran off 400 yards of line. ■ In the wake of a defeated tax package that would have repealed the 10 percent excise tax on boats, more than 500 industry workers marched on Capitol Hill on March 24 to draw attention to the urgency of Congressional action on the repeal issue. Organized by boat builders and members of the jewelry industry to keep pressure on a Congress caught up in preelection politics, the two-hour rally drew TV crews from all networks and participation of 20 U.S. senators and representatives. The rally proved to be a potent display of the frustration experienced by the boating industry. Both employed and laid-off boat workers made up the bulk of the crowd on the steps of the Capitol Building, toting handmade signs and traveling from as far as North Carolina…

■ Is it summer already? That’s what Bill and Kenny Risso aboard the VAL LYNN thought when they found a big school of ‘ahi and large aku way out to the north outside of Kahuku. They started getting hits, and the fish just piled up in the boat until there was no more ice and even less daylight. They pulled into He’eia Kea late with four ‘ahi weighing 122, 129, 132 and 148 lbs along with four large aku and one small mahimahi. What a catch for so early in the year. We encountered our first strike outside Kea’au Bay. The fish took the side outrigger, and with excitement the three of us yelled, “Strike! Hawai‘i’s Long-Distance Champion Hopefuls ■ Months ago, planning for the ATLAPAC Fishing Club’s Long-Distance Casting Tournament commenced. Many of 0’ahu’s best were invited to participate. All shared thoughts of someday possibly having a Hawai‘i state champion to represent the islands in the annual national and international competitions. The current casting records surpass an incredible 800 feet. Keith Sienkiwicz’s blazing best with 12-lb test line was 443 feet 10 inches (148 yards). Dan Arakaki, using his own custom Lamiglass graphite rod, blasted his best out 143 yards (just 5 yards short of first place). His cast was made with 20-lb test tournament class line.
